How To Change Strings On Your Ukulele

Aloha everyone, in this video Joe will be showing you how to change your strings. This is with the bridge pin method of fastening your strings which comes standard on all Kanile`a `Ukuleles.
If you own a 2018 model or before, be sure to watch till the end. Joe shows the difference between the older models to now. 15:05
WHY DO WE USE THE BRIDGE PIN METHOD, INSTEAD OF THE TRADITIONAL TIE ON METHOD?
With bridge pins it makes string changing a lot easier and it also allows better vibration transference from string to the soundboard, therefore, making a better sounding `ukulele. Another reason is that the most common repair for `ukuleles with the tie on method is their bridge popping off of the `ukulele. That's not the case for the Bridge pin system.

Hi Joe I have Kanilea K-2 T SM , which according to the label was handcrafted by yourself, in 2007 it has the slotted pegs and now after watching this video I have turned them round so the slot is at the back now the strings seem to be easier to fix now that I have done that as before sometimes they would jump out when getting under tension especially the E and the A but all good now Thanks for posting this video it has been very helpful 👍🎼🎶🎵🤙🏽. I need a closeup of where the string actually goes thru the headstock. It is hard to make the string actually go to the outside. What also winder to you use for these special gotoh tuners

Joe, some constructive criticisms: Your hand and arm hid the use of the bridge pin to free the knot from the hole. Plus your hand hid the knot you were tying and the camera shot was from the wrong angle, off to the side, when you tried to show it. The C-string demo was very helpful. I'll have to look up what a "Surgeon's Knot". Why did you have the front snips if you just used the cutter on the needle nose pliers? How did you modify the string winder? Just a piece of cardboard? Does the bridge pin work to release the string from the bridge if it doesn't have a slot in the pin?

Aloha Joe - I decided it might be time to change the strings on my Supertenor --- I had a set standing by ( have to order a new standby set now) :) ... They were sounding a little metallic and I couldn't get that Kanile'a sweetness - had been blaming the player :) . I couldn't feel the ridges in the strings whilst they were in place, BUT after I have replaced them! turbo boost on the volume and I could very distinctly feel those ridges ... Mahalo for your Aloha

Aloha Joe! My wife and I visited your factory about 18 months ago and I bought one of your Islander ukuleles. I really enjoy it ,and hope to come by next time we're on Oahu. I'll make sure to leave with a Kanile'a ukulele next time! Thanks for this video. I'm thinking about trying a low G string for the first time. How would I change my strings? Since this is three-plus years old video, you might update it. As mentioned by two others, your fingers blocked the view of removing the string from the bridge; also, in putting it back on, I couldn't see how you did it. I'm also confused with the Gotohs stealth tuners.

Hi Joe .Great video and awesome looking ukulele. Frequently when I change the A string on my KU ukulele the pin pops out. Any suggestions to prevent this ?

Aloha Bob, I would suggest holding your bridge pin in place with your finger while you bring your string up to tension. This will keep it in place and allow it to stay secured while bringing tension onto the string which will secure your bridge pin and keep it in place. Mahalo for the great question. Aloha -Joe

Hello! How did you modify the string winder for use with the gotoh stealth tuners? The one I have is to big to catch the tuning pegs and when I tried to put something inside it didn't work. Thank you 😊

Aloha Sugar, great question. What we do is place a piece of 1/8" thick cork inside of the string winder to create a pocket for the tunning key button to fit in. This allows us to keep the string winder useful for the Gotoh Stealth tuner and our traditional Kanile'a tuning keys. Mahalo -Joe

Hi Joe, I'm planning to buy Tenor 4 string sets with Low G online from Kanile'a website. How do I identify which string is it? Is there any sticker on each string? On the tutorial video, how come you are winding the C string differently from G, E & A? Is E string suppose to be winded just like the C string? Thanks.

Aloha, great questions. The strings are numbered 1, 2, 3, and 4. 1 is the bottom string when held in the player position (A string). 2 would be E. 3 would be C. and 4 would be the Low-G. The reason the C string is tied off differently on this particular demonstration is because the C-string is too thick to be threaded back through the tuning key post on the stealth tuners. If your instrument does not have stealth tuners, you will not need to worry about this step. Let us know if you have further questions. Mahalo!!

@@KanileaUkulele Shoots. Not this time around Joe, but good chance my next ukulele will be Kanile'a. I grew up windward side, mainly places that you can see Mokoli'i, but spent a year in Kane'ohe (on the same st as your factory) and lived behind the Holiday Mart in Kailua. I've had a couple shops try to sell me Kanile'a instruments here in CO, and I tell them no, I need to go to buy mine in Kane'ohe. I hope you are there when I go so we can talk story about windward O'ahu in the 80's. Malama pono!
