As a beginner in Feb. 2022 I was overwhelmed by the color wheel, palettes, brushes, values, warm and cool colors, arggg. Then I found your channel and bought the same palette and the same paint colors and set mine up exactly like yours. It was the best thing I did. It served me well. Since then I have painted 2-4 hrs a day every day and watched hundreds of videos. I understand all of the basics now. With a few exceptions, my palette is the same today as it was then. So thank you for your generosity in sharing your knowledge with us!

@@KrisDeBruineStudio Fortunately I am retired and have all the time in the world for fun. I will never be an “ artist” and that is fine because the thrill and the joy come simply from playing in the paint.

I finally got my ceramic palette about 3 weeks ago from Jackson’s. I love it! Better price than here in the US. I set it up based on your recommendation, a few different colors but same general idea. Thank you for your help!

I been moving colors around since I started watercolors in the mid 90s. It is so good to find you! Lol! Until I started having health problems, I only used my big plastic palettes! My rectangular one is mostly pre pthalo and quin colors and I used that more when painting plein air. When I got my plastic Quiller palette, I followed his instructions on what to put where, but have rearranged them both a bit. I have several porcelain plates and trays from Cost Plus that are wonderful for mixing. I've scrubbed both palettes with toothpaste and scrubbers so they do mix paints beautifully without breaking up. My rectangular palette actually hooks onto my watercolor easel lip so that's so very handy! I'm mostly Dan Smith too, with all kinds of other tubes floating around. I don't think I will actually ever NEED another tube of paint.... Lol!

Respectfully suggesting you might want to move gold ochre and nickel azo to the 2 available spaces in the yellow area and add buff titanium and davy’s grey to the outer area.
@KrisDeBruineStudio

Ahh. Yes. I have Buff Titanium on a separate small palette. It is definitely a helpful specialty color. Thanks so much for the suggestions. I'm still trying to figure out what to do with those two empty spaces. :-) So enticing!

Thank you Chris I’ve been trying to set up my a separate round palette into just a split primary. Purchased a small lightweight portable one but, I couldn’t decide how to set it up until now.

I often wonder how to do that ... thanks for that explanation! By the way: Jacksons Art has a much cheaper porcelain palette that looks exactly the same like the Quiller palette (costs 162 EUR), I paid for the Jacksons Art model just 66 EUR EUR!

Kris - I've been (most recently) taking water color classes once a week since early January. But altho I have amassed about 40-50 tubes of color, all across the spectrum, I am paralyzed about which yellows, which reds etc. Analysis paralysis has set in, I have at least 3 nice palettes (12 to 24 wells each) but ??? Hansa Yellow, Lemon Yellow, Reds, deep, med ... how on earth does one decide with all these options? I am drowning in confusion. How do you decide which of the various shades to include in a palette? My subjects or favorite things to paint are landscapes, nature, flowers, if that helps.

Hi Mary. I once felt as you do. But through experience, I've learned that there is not that big of a difference between, say various cool yellows. Whether it is Lemon Yellow or Hansa Yellow Light or Nickel Azo Yellow - they are quite similar. And when you start mixing them with other colors, the differences are even less important. I recommend you have a warm and a cool version of each primary, some earth tones and maybe a few specialty colors (i.e. Lavender). I think you've gone through my Getting Started in Watercolor course. I discuss this "split primary" approach to building a palette of colors in that course. I limit myself to ONE studio palette with max 32 colors and I probably only use about 16 or 18 of those colors regularly. I would recommend you do the same. Also, if you study the palettes of well-known artists they also limit themselves to about 18 colors and usually use the split primary approach.

I hear you!!! I'm overwhelmed with amount of paint I can choose from, but did have Winsor Newton Professional 24 pan with add'l pans added in the middle of my favorites- blues, greens, reds... So when I bought more convenience colors (several looked similar) I added to a 2nd palette. I'm a beginner but have similar likes to yours. I started at 68, and have taken almost a year off other than swatching 😅Well, now at 70, I need to reboot. Her tribute to Churchill today, gave me such inspiration! Happy painting! Enjoy the journey from a California Gramma ❤️

Do you not have issues with your Daniel Smith French Ultramarine drying super hard? Mine does and everyone else says theirs does too.
@KrisDeBruineStudio
@KrisDeBruineStudio Жыл бұрын
I spray my palette with water and cover it with plastic wrap whenever I finish painting. This keeps all my colors fresh and moist. But even if it does dry out...I haven't experienced a problem re-wetting my French Ultramarine. It is one of my favorite colors. I love it. I wish you well.
