Good video, very clear. However, FYI for you XRS version owners. The fill plug is a 10mm HEX. Yeah, everything on XRS has to be different. LOL

Good call! I believe the XRS (Corolla and Matrix) have the 2ZZ engine instead of the 1ZZ like my Corolla. That would explain the different sizes. Good thing to mention though! :)

@@DIYTillIDie Yes it has the 2ZZ. I had to replace the valve cover gasket and all the auto parts stores gave me a gasket that will not fit. They insisted it was correct. I finally went to the dealer and got the 2ZZ gasket which is larger due to engine design.

I just discovered this great YT channel. I have a Corolla 2007 G9 E120 latest line Brad Pitt (because of the publicity he did to this beautiful generation with the background song "New Sensation" by the band INXS) mine is made in Brazil (most of its parts are Japanese ). My manual gearbox is the Japanese C52 with the short 5th ratio (they chose this gearbox for South America because of the relief and height, even the tire profile was reduced for our harsh geography. The Japanese engineers decided to use the 60 profile for have a smaller tire circumference, benefiting the application of engine torque to the wheels, making it more agile, our tire size was 195/60R15. Instead, the decisions made by the engineers for your market were different, since they have a lot of flatness and highways, it was not necessary to use a short 5th and that is why they used the C59, in addition to a 65 profile, the 195/65R15 size increased the circumference.The advantages they had with this configuration vs ours, is that at the same speed, with the same 1ZZ-FE 1.8 engine, your car at the same speed travels at less rpm vs. mine, but those differences affect reaction, your car is less agile. I wanted to tell you what happened to me and know what you think; since I did the oil change at the end of last November, everything was perfect, I used the recommended viscosity 75W90 GL4 specific to take care of the copper synchronizers (the GL5 have excess EP additives and damage them, I did a lot of research on the effort, because it is very expensive, I was able to afford this Red Line MT90 in Argentina, it's the best you can buy). The problem I noticed when I came back from vacation in the Cordillera, a mountainous area about 2 weeks ago, was that the changes began to happen harder, I noticed it in the selector. What I did these days when I was at home was open the filler cap and what happened was that excess oil came out, it was a little over the level, approximately 60 ml came out. It wasn't much, after that, I closed the plug and used it, it improved the passage of gears already using the car in the city. Evidently the little excess of oil generated greater pressure inside the box and that is why it made it difficult for me to change gears (something very strange, but it shows). I assumed that it was due to the worn clutch (it has the original one with 123,000 km). I was about to change it, but I want to try it for a few more days to see if I continue to have difficulty changing gears or putting the 3rd; even when putting the 1st in movement it has difficulty, but this I always felt since I bought it used, even when being for example in 2nd gear and trying to put the first in movement, it costs a bit, but it goes in (I don't do it anyway often because I can force the synchronizers) Maybe I should definitely change the clutch?. Thank You very much, greetings from Argentina 🇦🇷 Acabo descubrir este gran canal de YT. Muchas gracias! Saludos desde Argentina 🇦🇷

Finally got around to changing my manual transmission fluid today. I waited till about 30K miles since the last change. It was remarkably easy to do. Easier than changing engine oil! I just used tire ramps and chocked the tires instead of using a jack and jack stands. Seeing as how the manual said 2 quarts of trans oil and you put in 2 quarts, I just left it on the ramp. Saved a step. Thanks for the very helpful video!

Good job on the video I like the specifics I am about to buy a 2004 Toyota matrix with a manual transmission I’ve read mostly bad reviews about those transmissions crapping out at 45,000 miles at the lowest the matrix I am about to buy has 239,000 miles do you think it would have any issuesBeing a high mileage car with a manual transmission because I would think they probably already fixed the problem by that mileage anyways

I am not sure. It's probably impossible to remove all of the old fluid unless you flush it a bunch of times. This works for general maintenance. But I didn't fill it when it was jacked up though. I lowered it to be level with the ground and then filled it then (about 7 mins in). 😊

How many miles did this gear oil have ? Did you buy the crush washers at the dealership?
@DIYTillIDie

The car had about 80-90k miles on it when I changed the fluid. Not sure if it was changed previously (no service records). I bought the crush washers on Amazon (link in description).

What if I just wanna check the fluid? These manual transmission usually don’t have a dipstick.
@DIYTillIDie
@DIYTillIDie 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Jace! You can check the fluid via the fill plug (NOT the drain plug!) If you take out the fill plug, you can check the fluid level with your finger. It should be up to the fill plug hole (but not overflowing.) You can also extract some fluid with an auto syringe to see the color of the fluid (see link below.) Hope this helps! www.amazon.com/Titan-51884-Automotive-Fluid-Syringe/dp/B018SV10I8

@@DIYTillIDie yeah I did the fill plug and the fluid started coming out fsr. It might be because I started the car to pull the front into the garage since it was starting to rain and maybe fluid got pumped up to the fill plug but it was the fill plug since it’s the one further at the top of the transmission and not the one at the very bottom.
@DIYTillIDie
@DIYTillIDie 3 жыл бұрын
@@jace_Henderson Make sure when you check the fluid you are on a level surface too, that will get you the most accurate reading. If fluid is coming out and doesn't look too dark/burnt, you should be good. It's a good idea to change the fluid every 30k miles just to be safe!

There are some DIY-ers who take the extra step of temporarily lowering the vehicle back to the ground as the fluid drains in order to drain out the extra fluid which would otherwise settle in the rear corner of the gearbox. It makes the job more tedious, but it might be worth the effort. What are your thoughts?
@DIYTillIDie

I do this step as well (7:00 mins in the video.) I lower the car to the ground and fill the trans while its level. Prevents overfilling the gearbox. :)

You really shouldn’t be doing DIY videos on your first time trying something. It’s a written rule with KZfaq. I appreciate you trying to help people (unless of course you’re just trying to help yourself financially) but chances are you’re going to ruin people. If you are not an expert please don’t post first time videos with vehicle mechanics. Or any subject for that matter. You simply don’t know enough to be able to teach someone what you were claiming to be the right way to do something. You didn’t even tell people how to check the fluid first….
