This is a How-To video that I made which will show you a step by step process on how to change the oil on a 2010 Honda Civic SI or any other 8th Generation Honda Civic SI which include any SI models from the years 2006 - 2011.
Things you'll need:
2 Jack Stands
A Jack to jack up your car
An Oil Catch Pan
An Oil Jug to hold your old oil in
A pair of gloves
A socket wrench set with a 17mm socket
A 5 qt jug of new 10W-30 (or 5W-20 if you live in colder environments) Fully Synthetic Oil (the SI uses 4.6 qts)
A new oil filter
A lug nut wrench to take your passenger tire off
Some rags to keep things clean
A pair of coveralls to keep YOU clean!
Optional:
An Oil Filter removal wrench

No need to jack up the car and remove the tire. From under the car, the oil filter is deep in there, but can be accessed by using a long extension to the oil filter wrench.

Great video but I was under the assumption that the jack should only be used on the jack points. Looks like you used the jack on the frame in front of the jack point. Is that OK to do or could it damage the frame?

why are you using 10w 30 whe. the recomended is 5w30
@PeterGenovese
@PeterGenovese 8 жыл бұрын
+ANTHONYNI33 5w30 is recommended because it works better in colder temperatures so that's why they recommend it on all the cars. If used in warmer temps, it won't cause an issue. However, 10w30 has a higher viscosity, meaning, it is a little bit thicker of an oil and so it doesn't work as well in cold temps. But since I live in Los Angeles where we have warm weather all the time, then 10w30 is better for my car because of the fact that the oil IS thicker, it provides better protection in extremely hot temps and since it doesn't get cold in the single digits here, then it makes more sense for me to use 10w30.
@ANTHONYNI33
@ANTHONYNI33 8 жыл бұрын
+Peter Genovese ok good to know but performance wise 5w30 is better right?
@PeterGenovese
@PeterGenovese 8 жыл бұрын
+ANTHONYNI33 Well it's hard to say that 5W30 works better because it really depends on the temperature that you're driving your car in. So like I said, that weight works better in colder weather and so it will perform better in those conditions compared to 10w30 but then 10w30 will work better in warmer temps.
@PeterGenovese

Sorry, I just now saw your response / question from 9 months ago! So here's the deal and as I answered in another post .... if you live in warmer areas like I do in Los Angeles, then 10W-30 is more efficient for the engine because it has a higher temperature burn rating which makes the most sense living in a warmer climate. However, 10W-30 isn't good for colder climates and that's why they recommend 5W-20 because it is more efficient in colder weather but can also work for warmer temps as well, but not as well as 10W-30. But again, 10W-30 is not good for colder weather and so the safest type to use in all conditions is the 5W-20 and so that's why they list it as the recommended oil type for our car. But if you live in warmer weather then definitely use 10W-30!
@TheRichardF10
@TheRichardF10 6 жыл бұрын
Peter Genovese I live in Long Beach, CA and I also use 10W-30. 10W-30 should only be used for temperatures above 0°F but the L.A. area never goes below freezing point of 32°F. 10W-30 evaporates less than 5W-30, which involves a lot more explaining dealing with NOACK percentage loss, but that is more technical. Nothing bad with using either oils though. I have used both with zero issues. Supposedly 5W-30 gets you better gas mileage but by 1%-2%, which is not noticeable. I'll stick to 10W-30 unless I visit Colorado.

wheres your drain plug washer?
@PeterGenovese
@PeterGenovese 9 жыл бұрын
Christian Ladia I actually lost it during one of my previous oil changes (dropped the drain plug in the oil catch basin and didn't realize that the washer was still in there when I pulled it out) but found that there was no leakage even without the washer so it worked out fine without the washer after all. I've been without a washer for a handful of oil changes now and have never experienced any leakage around the drain plug.

You don’t need to remove the wheel to reach oil filter and let the engine cool down before changing oil,simples.

I'm just curious as to why you didn't fill the new filter with oil prior to installing it?? I've always been taught to fill it prior to installing so as to avoid dry starts, which causes significantly more stress on the motor.... Please correct me if I'm wrong.
@PeterGenovese
@PeterGenovese 9 жыл бұрын
HIMFAN8907 Very good question. So, the reason that I don't fill the oil filter up with oil is because it is not really need in regular sized cars due to the fact that there's a small amount of oil that the filter holds at any one time. Now, when people do oil changes on big truck, big rigs, etc. those oil filters can hold up to a gallon of oil due to the large engine size and it's THOSE oil filters that you would want to pre-fill with oil. But for regular cars and even typical pickup trucks, etc. it's not really needed because the oil pump fills our filters up with oil fairly quickly and the engine really doesn't even notice the hiccup due to the small size of car filters. But like I said, for large engines that you find in tractors, big rigs, etc. those are the ones you will want to pre-fill. But make sure to spread oil along the oil filter gasket so that it creates a nice seal when you tighten it. And as I mentioned in the video, I always tighten filters by hand and I just read on Pennzoil's website that they recommend doing so as well so I'm glad I got that validation. They also don't mention to pre-fill the filter with oil in section 13 of this link: www.pennzoil.com/learn-about-motor-oil/changing-your-own-oil/ and if it were something important to do, I'm sure they would have said to make sure to pre-fill the oil in the filter before installing it. Another thing I typically do is that I usually change my oil after I've driven my car somewhere. This ensure that the pistons are properly lubed with the existing oil already and so the whole thing about not pre-filling the filter with oil is even less of a concern due to the fact that there's already a nice layer/coating of oil throughout my engine since I had just driven it. If you change the oil after your car's been sitting around all night, then you won't have that coating of oil in place already. So if you are not pre-filling oil in the new filter, it's probably best to change the oil after you drive somewhere. But even so, it probably STILL doesn't matter if you didn't pre-fill when your car's been sitting overnight. It's just that the filters are so small and the amount of time that your engine won't be getting oil is such a small amount of time that it just doesn't cause any damage. A great question and by the way, it's not going to hurt anything if you DO pre-fill your new oil filters with oil so if you want to continue doing so then by all means keep doing it! But you really don't have to so you have that option now, too. It's a lot less of a messy job when you don't fill the new filter with oil so that's always a plus lol
@HIMFAN8907
@HIMFAN8907 9 жыл бұрын
Peter Genovese Thanks for the response. I'm glad that I got a legitimate answer, instead of being trolled. Lol. Like I said, I've always pre-filled my filters. It's how I was taught. Everyone does things a little differently, so it's nice to see how other people do it. As far as putting oil in the gasket, I always do that. I don't trust Pennzoil but, again, to each their own. I only use Mobile1 oil and filters on my 06 Si. Also have a K&N Typhoon Series short ram intake. I try to use the best products I can. Again, thank you for the quick response and in depth information. I appreciate it

+Peter Genovese It only made the noise when engaging the clutch. I Fixed that issue by spraying WD40 on the spring located on the clutch pedal. appears to be a common problem.
@PeterGenovese
@PeterGenovese 8 жыл бұрын
+Erik Reyes Oh YES, I DO know what you're talking about because I have experienced this same thing on mine as well! Sometimes it does it sometimes not, depending on the weather and how hot or cold it is. Seems like it does it more in the warmer weather but yeah, when I press the clutch in, it makes an almost crunching sound but it's never caused any problems so I never worried about it much. Glad to hear you found a way to quiet it, if it IS indeed the same issue. I should try doing what you suggested with the WD40, that sounds like an easy fix! Maybe I'll wait until my clutch starts making that noise again and then make a short fix it video for that as well!

is better use Fram filter than the original Honda filter?
@PeterGenovese
@PeterGenovese 7 жыл бұрын
You definitely DON'T have to use a Honda brand filter. Honda makes their own filters to make more money. You can just as well use an off the shelf filter at your local auto shop and FRAM is just as good, if not better. As long as you are changing your oil regularly when you're supposed to, then the filter brand won't be a big issue because you'll be replacing it at regular intervals, anyways.

@PeterGenovese
@PeterGenovese 7 жыл бұрын
I've never tried it with a ramp but even with a ramp, I would think it would be too hard to get to. Notice in my video that there doesn't seem to be enough clearance from underneath. It seems that the only way to properly get to the filter is by removing the passenger side wheel and then reaching up as I do in the video.

@PeterGenovese 7 жыл бұрын
It doesn't sound like you have an SI model if your Oil filter is underneath the car. Standard Civics of that year have oil filters underneath the engine whereas true SI models have it where you see it in my video, behind the wheel and towards the middle of the engine. When you open your hood, does the top of the engine look like it does in my video? Is the oil cap where you add oil in the same place as you see in my video?

tpcs - Yeah, my Civic SI also says to use 5W-20 but if you live in warmer areas like I do in Los Angeles, then 10W-30 is more efficient for the engine because it has a higher temperature burn rating which makes the most sense living in a warmer climate. @motoryzen
@motoryzen 7 жыл бұрын
Peter Genovese I'm in Jack-town Mississippi. So it's around the same heat and just as humid. The " 30" in that rating just means the viscosity or thickness of the oil at the normal operating temperature as the vehicle reaches the normal temperature ( in my car's case it's around the 40 to 42% mark. Many cars like my wife's 05 zx4 focus sedan, it's more like the 48% to 50% mark) I mention that as a thinking outloud deal. I'll make note of this though. :D
@MultiChimRichalds
@MultiChimRichalds 7 жыл бұрын
civic si recommended viscosity is 5w-30. the standard civic uses 5w-20.
@PeterGenovese
@PeterGenovese 7 жыл бұрын
Again, the 5w covers all areas, specifically where there is colder weather. If you live in a warm area like I do, in Los Angeles, then 10w is probably better. The 5w is a lower viscosity oil, not as thick. This means that the 5w oil is able to flow easier in cold temps because it's not as thick. However, at warmer temps, that lower viscosity won't protect as well as a 10w, especially as the engine gets hot in those warmer environments. So again, for people like me who live in warmer climates, the 10w is going to protect the engine better.
@MultiChimRichalds
@MultiChimRichalds 7 жыл бұрын
Peter Genovese sorry but that's where you're wrong. the first number refers to the viscosity at low temperatures. however the second number refers to the viscosity at operating Temps. 5w30 and 10w30 are nearly identical thickness when the engine is at normal operating temperature. hence multi viscosity oil.
