Choosing the best sediment or sand filter for your family shouldn’t be difficult, but what micron do you need? Which one is better, 50, 25, 10, 5 or 1? Is the lower number better or worse? What about an automatic self cleaning filter? I’m going to explain the micron ratings and help you choose which one is best for your family right now!
There are several different micron ratings of sediment filters, waterestore.ca/collections/se... but they all look the same. Choose one that is too dense and you could be restricting your water flow and will require replacement often, choose one that isn’t dense enough and it will not remove bigger sediment to keep your Ultraviolet disinfection system working and you’ll still have too much sediment getting through into your home.
Filters are rated by their ability to remove sediment down to a particular size of microns. So what’s a micron? A micron is one millionth of a meter, but what does that really mean? For example, a human hair is 45 microns in diameter or a red blood cell is 5 microns in size.
When choosing a filter, you really need to know what you’re hoping to accomplish with this filter. If it’s a pre filter for an Ultraviolet light it will need to filter down to a very fine 5 microns. If you’re just thinking about removing some of the particles in your water because they’re clogging the screens going to your washing machine or bathroom faucets, a coarser 20 microns would be fine.
A great solution to get the benefits of both filters is to go with a dual gradient filter waterestore.ca/search?type=pr... like a 50 to 5 which is a very coarse 50 microns on the outside but a much finer 5 microns on the inside.
Another thing to consider is alternatives to polypropylene filter cartridges.
If you have a lot of very coarse sediment in your water and you’re constantly replacing filters you can go with a spin down filter. But keep in ,mind that about the finest they get is 60 microns and you need to maintain these waterestore.ca/search?type=pr...
If you have lots of sand but don’t want to keep manually cleaning the spin down filter waterestore.ca/search?type=pr... you can go with an automatic back washable filter which will remove sediment down to almost 5 microns waterestore.ca/products/hum-a...
If you have multiple needs, like coarse sand, too much sediment and you need to pre filter for a UV light you can use a couple of filters starting at the coarsest filter first in the direction of the water flow going down to the finest filter. If you have a carbon filter in the mix, it would be the last filter because carbon will clog very readily from sediment in your water so you definitely want to get rid of that first!

Wow. I just noticed someone actually answers the questions posted in your comment section. That's amazing. Well, I sent an email to the "info" email address listed above, but I thought I would also post it here. Hi Gary, Just watched your youtube video on which filter works best for each type of use. Very good by the way. My big question is how to clean a stainless steel 100 micron filter that's 3/4" diameter and 3 inches long. It's inserted inside a plastic fitting that attaches to the end of a line that's connected to a 55 gal drum where I am catching A/C condensate run off. The fitting has a connector where you can then attach a garden hose. After a while the filter gets dirty enough to slow down the outflow, and the people who sell it say to just soak it in warm water, which I have done. But it just doesn't seem to get the filter all that clean. I watched a youtube video where they recommended using PBW as a cleane, but I called the manufacturer and they recommended I DON'T use PBW. Just wondering if you have a recommendation on how to thoroughly clean the filter, or do I just replace it for about $12? Thanks, Patrick

Gary, first of all: You are awesome and truly professional. I have a question: I am trying to put in the filters for my reverse-osmosis drinking water system. I got the filter system from a friend. I put the Polypropylenfilter (5 Micron) first, then the Granular Activated Carbon Filter. Everything like most other filter systems on the market. But with the 3rd filter, my friend wrote me that I need to put in a 1 Micron Filter). So instead of the Block Carbon Filter like most the other systems have on the market. Do you know what is better for the 3rd stage: Block Carbon Filter or a 1 Micron Filter. I mean the stage right before the water enters the osmosis filter?

Great video Gary. I have no filtration in my house right now and I am on a well. After cleaning my sink, I can expect to find a some orange deposits around my sink drains after about a week or so. Although I can't really notice too much iron in my water visually, it's definitely there. What micron filter should I purchase to solve this issue? Would it be worth having a spin down filter to go along with a big blue filter in my application? Thanks so much.

Great video. One question I was hoping you could answer: I have a reverse osmoses filter as my main filter and a carbon filter as a pre filter. Does it matter if the carbon filter is 5 or 10 microns? i thought the particles of chlorine would pass through 10 micron but not through a 5 micron, however I read the the chlorine added to the water is in a gas shape and the way the carbon filter removes it from the water is by a chemical process instead or particle size separation. I would appreciate your insight on that?

Hi Gary! I get my water directly from a spring. The water is already very clear and tastes really good, I've been drinking from that source for about 2 years now and never had any trouble. What is the best way to treat spring water without making it lose its taste and other benefits that it is known for? Is there something else I can add besides a sediment filter and a UV disinfection system? Is a carbon filter necessary for spring water (or anything else)?

Hi Gary. I'm on a well in Indiana, and have a problem with smelly water. A plumber came out and tested my water, and found that the smell is manganese, so he recommended the 20 inch filtration system before my water softener. I had a 20 micron filter in at first, but after a few weeks the smell returned. I've upgraded to a 50 micron filter that I changed this morning (with help from one of your other videos). If the smell persists, the plumber recommended "shocking" my well with bleach. Is that what you would recommend as well? Thank you, you've got a new subscriber!

I have been using a 30 micron then a 10 micron on a well for the past couple years. The filters stay pretty clean and do not clog, pressure drop, even after 18+ months. Is it worth the expense to try a 5 micron as the final filter, replacing the 10 micron? I have a UV sterilizer after the final 10 micron filter and a water softener and calcite tank between the 30 and 10 micron filters.

@jordanblair5410 7 ай бұрын
I'd be interested in learning about how micron size and pressure drop are related (micron size vs psi), along with how going to smaller micron media increases the frequency of filter cleaning (ie does a 5 micron filter require cleaning twice as often as a 10 micron filter). There's always a "price to pay" for going up or down in micron size -- no free lunch here.
@GarytheWaterGuy
@GarytheWaterGuy 7 ай бұрын
There is very little difference in pressure drop based on microns, until they get dirty. The lower the micron number the more quickly they will clog. How much more quickly? Impossible to say as it depends on the size of dirt you are running through it and how much dirt.

Rust baby rust we have lots of rust in our bad well water from the town. You didn't mention rust. So, I have a whole house single 5 micron 20 x 2.5 filter, in the Pentair blue casing. But will changing to a 1 micron be overkill? Will it make filter changes needed too often? It's mainly rust or scale that messes up everything. Will 1 micron reduce my flow a lot? Will 1 micron too easily clog up filters with rust?? I also have a water softener, it's run after the big blue. Gonna toss my message into the bottle so to speak. So I'm gonna be getting a 50m Spin-down ABR, a 5-1m sediment, then a 5-1m carbon using 2 20" BB's (If I can find them in 5m-1m, Haven't decided if I wanna go with a uv yet.) My concern is this is on a Well that runs at 65 psi but isnt exactly a mustang of GPM. Will having three points of filtration, potentially a fourth absolutely murder the pressure for my house? Edit: Objective here is Iron and Bacterial Iron removal. It isn't heavy but it does stain clothing and porcelain and renders any water unpalatable. There's also sediment and pebbles, but the 50m spindown should grab those. 1m may be entire overkill since there isn't any Chlorine, but may not entirely be unwarranted due to the Iron bacteria.

Anyway. 12 months later im replacing all my filters as i now smell the water again. Im going 5 micron and carbon. And kdf again. But for the 4th filter.. should i do another sediment filter in stead of another carbon ? The reason why i ask is i noticed the last 2 20 inch filter containers had iron in them. Maybe a 2nd sediment filter will help remove that oxidizing iron ? Or should i just go a 2nd carbon filter after the KDF

No you are taking a "band aid" approach to this. You need an actual iron filter. Check out this video kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ndqldJyVttLWqp8.html

@@GarytheWaterGuy i tried an iron filter it didnt do anything. Iron filters dont reduce iron that hasnt oxidized yet. Id need some kind of air injection system to oxidize and store the water to allow it to rust then be filtered. Edit: i guess thats what you were recomending. I thought you ment an actual iron magnanese filter. Tried that until i realized the iron my sediment filter wasnt getting hasnt been oxidized yet. I hate how much sediment my well has. Smells of iron without a carbon filter.. and that 5 micron filter after 3 months has a thick layer of mud on it. And sand at the bottom of the blue filter

@@GarytheWaterGuy also the house has a veey old analog water softner. Its been bypassed thlugh with the valve on it. I plugged it in and it does work and i hear it backwashing. But i didnt see any liquid coming from the little tube to the salt tank so i dunno if its functioning right. However when i turn it on and run the water. It smells odd. And is yellowish. Bath tub is yellow. If i turn the bypass back on the water is crystal clear. Could the resin be bad ? Its a near 25 year old softner

what micron is best for ground water?
@GarytheWaterGuy
@GarytheWaterGuy 3 жыл бұрын
It depends on what you want to accomplish. For just rough filtration a 75 to 25 micron dual gradient is always a great first filter.

There is a screw inside the housing up into that button, try tightening the screw.

what does Pore: 30 um mean, as does it filter smaller than 5 micron particles
@GarytheWaterGuy

um means microns. The bigger the number the bigger the dirt particle that will get through.

@@GarytheWaterGuy Thank you for the speedy reply, verifying I had it correct, the 30 micron (um) goes before the 5 micron.

Your question is in fact no question. None of the sediment filter can be good or sufficient for the family for every purpose. Thus selection of micron rating of filter depends on the initial properties of water sources and it's uses.

Does 1 micron filter stops germs? As i read corona virus is 2.5 micron, does most bacteria n viruses are bigger or smaller than this? Really appreciate ur response

By germs if you mean bacteria and viruses, no it does not. Typically we use UV light for that purpose kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bZueid2Gu6-UqoE.html

What micron level is good for just showering? My goal is to have a system that separates what I drink/cook with from showering, laundry, toilet flushing etc. My primary would be the least filtered going to a holding tank, then the next most filtered on down the line until I get to cooking and drinking.

Depends on what you would like that filter to remove from your water. Usually sediment from well water or chlorine from city water.
