If the heater is smoking badly but appears to have a good amount left. Look at the top edge of the wick. If it has a hard build up on it take it outside and let it burn itself out without turning it off. This is called a dry burn. It will burn the crud off the wick and improves performance.

This is on my rainy day list for tomorrow. I'm predicting it will not go as smoothly as what you just demonstrated. I also predict a fair amount of profanity and possibly throwing this thing across my shop. I applaud your patience my friend.

For anyone having issues with not being able to adjust wick up or down after the install, what worked for me was not only what another viewer mentioned, about having the wick all the way up before install, but making sure the gasket is properly seated ALL the way around. Mine was only partially seated, and prevented the main center unit with the wick to be seated all the way down. Mine was sitting a little crooked due to the gasket not being seated all the way. You can't really tell by just looking at it per say, but there is a little groove the gasket NEEDS to rest in, in order for it to work properly, otherwise the wick mechanism gets bound up. Took about 20 min and alot of cursing to figure this out. Hope this helps someone.

That and also the damn alignment pins on the wick keep coming out of the holes while I’m trying to assemble all this. I think I need a new wick cus mines flimsy as a mf

As others have already mentioned here, it is recommended to re-install the adjustment knob and then turn the wick all the way up BEFORE re-inserting the wick assembly back into position. This will allow the knob to fully adjust the wick up and down once assembled. Also, several manufacturers advise to "WAIT ONE FULL HOUR in order let the wick fully absorb kerosene BEFORE lighting. Failure to do so could severely damage your wick", as is written in their instruction manuals. Keep up the great work, you have a very good style of explaining even the little details to the viewers.

For my Duraheat 2304s the control knob needed to be in the maximum clockwise wick elevating position at the time the wick assembly was put back. Without the knob in that position, the control knob wouldn't elevate the wick after reassembly.

Lol…2304 owner here, I really wish I would have read this comment yesterday. I spent over an hour on reassembly, then the wick would not elevate once back into the unit. WOW, I was SO FRUSTRATED! Turn knob clockwise and watch inside, you will see the holes rotation up. However, be careful, as if you you wiggle the unit around too much, the tip balance will trigger and cause it to shut down and wick holes will go back into the down position.

I live in a house built in 1886 with all but one of the fireplaces removed. Once the cold settles in the house it turns into a refrigerator even if we get a warm spell the house stays cold … I have the same heater and it’s worked like a charm for the last three years but this year mid October we had a cold spell and I had to use it for our front bedrooms and for some reason the flames inside the heater is out of control smoking and flaming ! After watching your video ( replacing the wick ) I feel I can do this now that you have showed us ! Thanks for taking the time to make this Video, very helpful….

Nice video. You should take the top off and clean the soot off. This way, you know if it's burning cleanly. When it burns clean, the top stays white. I've had a few situations where it was burning less than perfect and you slowly start to feel sick. The best way of knowing is to all of a sudden see black soot at the top. Usually this happens when I try to lower the burn rate too much and it becomes inefficient.

They recommend waiting one hour for a new wick to properly absorb the kerosene before lighting or you will damage the wick. Even though dry burning and brushing the carbon off the wick is recommended about 3-5 uses or tank fills after the new wick has been put in. Also In my experience, empty or burn all the kerosene out before replacing. Because if you accidentally get the wick wet with kerosene before it is properly installed and pushed all the way down it will be very very difficult if not impossible to get it in place. I've been there. A wet wick will keep falling off the inside ring. If you manage to do it, a wet wick will also not want to slide into the tank and will push the wick off center and out of place. I wrestled with my first one for 20 minutes, almost gave up and the wick ended up uneven. So the flame was too high on one side and not high enough on the other. I ended up burning it until empty and starting over. Much easier with a dry tank.

@captainscentsible3938 If you have access to a fire circle OUTSIDE you can pour some out over dry wood & use it up that way Don't OVERDO it , you can also use it in " highway balls or oil lamps ( ALWAYS OUTSIDE ! ) Also you can use the old fuel to soak rusty metal tools before burning it up. Though kerosene can keep for yrs I would not try to reburn it in that or any other heater Before you do ANY of that , take the lid & " chimney" off & crank the knob all the way CLOCKWISE / RIGHT and try to see the wick, If you can see it , gently scrub it all around with an old toothbrush 🪥 , if you are not afraid ,( NO PUFFY LONG SLEEVES , DANGLING SCARFS , HAIR ETC ! ) light a candle & gently light the wick all around . If it lights fairly easily in a full circle ⭕ 🔴 carefully place the " chimney " & top lid back , wait for it to glow orange & then gently turn the knob COUNTER CLOCKWISE / LEFT ...The flame should not come over the top rim , adjust accordingly.....

Awesome "How to Video" from one who claims to be "A Non Professional Heater Fixer...". One technique/suggestion: When your ready to install the New Wick/assemble back on the heater unit base, is to elevate your new Wick UP with the knob (crank all the way to the right), takes up the majority of the wick and everything drops into place securely. With regular use during cold weather, Wicks last AT BEST 2 years..... Thanks for taking the time for posting!

Good video. Especially dealing with fuel already in the tank. A small amount of kerosene will make your garage or shop unusable for a time due to the smell. Best to do it outside if possible. Figured out mine was going bad when there was a gap in the flame around the burner when i was using it.

Long-winded and a bit more could be mentioned about the fact that the little tin sleeve with teeth and holes for the wick is part of the lifting mechanism. If you let the sleeve slide down too far the pins will go into the sleeve and shell but not ride the lift mechanism. The other thing I would add is that if you bump the spring release without pressure on the bottom it'll unwind the spring about 3 clicks too far. So, once you get the first pin in, twist the knob once or twice to verify it rides the lift (and doesn't just push the pins out).

You ever do a dry burn on your heater ? You let the heater run out of fuel . Re light it and let it burn the carbon and fuel residue off of the wick . It should burn for about an hour and a half on the carbon . We run kerosene heaters in our shop all day long. About once a week we do a dry burn . It will prolong wick life by 3 times . Also never burn dyed kerosene that is red in color as it is bad for the wicks . The dye gums and gels on the wick . I change them for other people frequently during the winter. Been running them for 20 years and doing my own matinence. Take care and stay safe !

Well, Id rather watch someone to it first. Before I burn my house down! 🤣 But 60 minutes soak time it states in the manual after changing or running out of fuel. Not sure, if that's what they are referring to as "The Dry Burn*.., Or if that's another actual step prior to soaking after swapping wicks was well... 🤷🏻‍♂️. In any case, things worked well doing the same as you did. Soo... Lol Thought I'd share what little I did know with the class. Thanks dude. Informative as hell. Keep doing what you're doing.

A couple of tips so that this goes smoother: 1. It's very easy to make sure the tank is empty. Use a siphon pump and suck all of the kerosene out. Then, light the wick outside. When it stops burning, your tank will pretty much be empty. To be sure, you can wait an hour and light it again. It should be pretty dry. 2. The wick will have metal three posts or little dowels that stick out maybe an inch. Those posts have to go in the spiral slots, each with a hole in the bottom. If you don't put it in there, the wick won't raise and lower correctly. 3. After taking to old wick off, put the knob back on! You'll need it later. 4. Once you get the wick on and you put it half way back on RAISE THE WICK! This will be hard, because it'll want to keep dropping back down. So use the knob to hold it in the up position and push the unit back on to the four posts (the ones that had the wing nuts on them). 5. Confirm that you can raise and lower the wick and that it drops when you hit the white extinguisher lever. If it doesn't work, take it apart and start again. Once all is good, take the knob off and put everything back together. This is something that if you do it a few times, you get it. The first time was hard for me. Good luck!

good video... slow enough and the tip below to soak the NEW wick for an hour is to get the wick wet with kerosene (K-1 pure and clear) before lighting it the first time OUTDOORS!. Using the K-1 kerosene is best since it burns clean and does not foul the wick with impurities. NO GASOLINE at all for any reason (gasoline is explosive and flashes if a spark is applied). Light the heater outside with the wick raised UP and lower it when it is burning. To me, the battery/glowplug feature is a waste of time. I like using a cheap grill lighter that has a long tube/burn tip with a trigger to light the butane fuel... they are about $1 at a Dollar Tree type store. My Sanyo heater will not disassemble enough to remove the old wick, so I am stuck. I see no way to free the assembly (that has a wheel that moves the wick up or down). All the other steps are intuitive and I can do them easily.

Would have liked to have seen the wick heighth after replacement. My new wick is level with the top of the housing, even in the highest adjustment. This wick position does not allow the flame to burn very high, even in the highest setting. I watched your video to see if you actually adjusted the knob to the high setting prior to seating the wick in place. You didn't, so I was just wondering if your new wick was protruding up and beyond the metal housing of if it is flush, like mine.

That wick did not look like it needed changing. If you're getting black smoke even after the flame is adjusted correctly then it needs to be cleaned by dry burning it which is something that is required if you maintain the heater per the manufacturer's instructions. You should be dry burning the wick every couple tanks of fuel to get rid of excess carbon as directed in the owners manual.

The wick assembly breaks down further. You can specially get the wick liner out and it makes this way easier...

i noticed you didnt try to move the Wick up and down to make sure its not biding. Sometimes the Wick will bind. They say at leas 1/2 hour to let the Wick soak i think an hour is reasonable just to make sure.

I noticed that you didn’t mention anything about how far to put the wick in before you push it onto the pins? I’m told that there’s some kind of a line that you’re supposed to not go past when you place the wake up into that circle.

Did this stop the black smoking problem, thanks
@KyleHallwoodworker
@KyleHallwoodworker 2 жыл бұрын
It did another way to try and fix the black smoke is by doing a dry burn . Light the heater and let it burn completely out of fuel this will also clean the wick

The directions say any time you change the wick or you've completely emptied the kerosene and the wick is dry, after adding new kerosene (or replacing the wick), you should wait an hour to let the wick soak up the kerosene.

All you cover is the 90% that anyone can easily figure out.(screws and wingnuts) You then blow right by how to actually get the wick installed. "This is really tricky", "hopefully yours goes easier"? Hows about some closeups of the metal sleeve? Or a better look at lining up the pins? Nothing about wick height when your done. Nothing about how the wick adjustment knob works. Tightening the spring.

Your assembly is going to cause severe binding of the wick....Also you should clean the wick post from tar buildup as wick lock out will occur without cleaning it...
