'dry burn' after buying a barely used one cost me $50 and I only use K-1 clear kerosene and have a pump station just up the street here in central VA. Do NOT use reddish diesel type kerosene fuel. That burns dirty and stinky. Changing a wick on these heaters is a pain, but once you do it, it makes a lot more sense just how to do it.

I have seen a lot of videos on people saying their igniter doesn’t work don’t know if it’s a common thing but I always hold my igniter in for about ten seconds and raise the burner handle to help it get more air to the igniter but it has always worked for me thanks for sharing your tips and tricks. 🤘🏼❤️

I read using alkaline batteries mess with the ignitor. You are supposed to use heavy duty batteries. Mine isn't working right and sure enough there's alkaline batteries in it. I'm gonna pick up some heavy duty ones tomorrow and switch them out. Hopefully it will fix it.

Also, if the hot wire is buried into the wet wick. The wire shouldn't touch the wick. And stale fuel is more difficult to light.

The owners manual says to burn your heater every 3rd tank. Also, you have to take a small brush to break up the build-up and also tells you that in the owners manual. I have 3 heater, and I do the maintenance on them exactly as the manual says and my run clean.

These wicks, especially the fiberglass ones last practically forever. The problem with these wick heaters is that you have to 'burn the wick down' periodically to clean it off. Just run it out of fuel and turn the wick up. It will burn all the carbon off of it, then just take a nylon brush and brush it off. Best to do it outside as it takes a 30-45 minutes depending on the carbon level and it is a smokey process. Most of the wicks get contaminated early from improper adjustment. Also you need to monitor it for the first 20 minutes whiles its heating up and adjust the burn. There's ONLY one correct setting and you need to fiddle with it once it heats up to get there. You want the flames just licking out of the burner cap maybe 1/2" uniform with no noise or smoke. You can adjust the wick height and the cap side to side and in and out to get the correct position.

I'm in the middle of getting geothermal and have been using this little 23K btu kerosene heater as emergency heat while the slow project continues. Yesterday, all of a sudden, the heater started putting out carbon monoxide. Not enough to trigger our co detector, but enough that it was giving me a headache. Then suddenly, the vent area at the top started getting covered with soot. I didn't think the wick needed replacing already (I just bought the heater a few months ago) and your video fixed things. I siphoned out all of the kerosene, started it up and it burned for another 1 1/2 hours. Then I added more kerosene and let it sit for an hour, started it up and there's no smoke. Previously, I had been running it til about midnight, then putting it outside and turning it off and starting it up again around 7am, but these last few days have been brutally cold, so I've been running it 24/7, and that might have contributed to the dirty wick? I'm not sure. I just can't wait til the geothermal project is finished, but thanks for the help!

The importance of good fresh quality fuel cannot be overstressed. If the flame is receeding over an hour or two to the point you need to keep raising the wick, your wick is getting clogged by contaminated fuel.

Doesn't burning the wick down out of fuel start to burn the wick itself? That seems like a way to wreck the wick.
@felinespirits
@felinespirits Жыл бұрын
Dry burning only damages the wick if the wick is made of cotton (like the old Perfection Heater wicks). On the vast majority of newer wicks for this type heater, the burner section is actually made of fiberglass. Dry burning a fiberglass wick burns off the accumulated carbon gunk without damaging the wick.

No, burning it dry will not hurt the fiberglass wick. The owners guide will tell you to do the same thing. The problem is that most people don't read it until they have trouble, and sometimes by then, they've lost the owners guide. Read the guide and you will be happier with your heater, i promise.

I got one of those last year and they work very well. I can heat up both floors of my apartment with 1 of em! What I would like to see is someone get one to run on biodiesel. Then I could heat the house for basically free with my used cooking oil. I made biodiesel and tried it, thinking it would work, since I've seen ppl using normal diesel fuel in these. For my experiment I did a mix of 75% k1 and 25% biodiesel. It did not like it! flame smoked then went out. I ended up having to replace the wick to fix it. It would be nice to see some burner that could burn biodiesel clean enough so it doesn't need to be vented like the kero heaters. Anything I've seen that works is either too complex (air compressors , sprayer nozzles, ect) or Needs a chimney and still doesn't burn cleanly. I think there is a way to get biodiesel to burn cleanly with a wick configuration like the kero heaters.

@@GMCLabs I nearly destroyed my diesel heater running a used oil/diesel mix. You get very good at taking it apart to clean every week. The crap inside gets rock hard. I stopped because it was such a pain and usually wouldn't start on stay running on the coldest days. Unless you can get a model where you can adjust flow and fan settings, it is a pain.
@GMCLabs
@GMCLabs 6 ай бұрын
@@livestock9722 I heard its a good idea to run clean diesel right after you run oil to burn out all that junk. Also they recommend just running it on high when running oil. I was gonna use biodiesel so that should hopefully run cleaner than used motor oil. one guys has been having good luck running a 50/50 blend of kerosene and vegetable oil.
@livestock9722
@livestock9722 6 ай бұрын
@@GMCLabs I can't see diesel burning out the carbon. It sticks like cement. You literally have to torch it out or chip at it with a hammer. And if saving money is the goal, running on high will definitely defeat the purpose. But I could see running veg oil and diesel working better. Probably not viable if running 24/7 for 4 months like mine does. Even died diesel clogs it up over a month running.

Mine did this too when I changed it. I watched another vid and the guy took the burner out, pulled the wick out. Then he turned the burner upside down he removed the burner housing by turning it and pulling up. This exposed the inner burner are where you can see the wick posts in the slots. Then he installed the wick upside down. Keeping it upside down he worked the wick knob to make sure the posts were properly seated. He reinstalled the burner housing. The best way to reassemble is to place masking tape( not duck nor gorilla tape) on the tip balance. This way you can raise the wick all the up as you reassemble without tripping the balance to lower the wick. Carefully work the bottom of the wick over the burner. This solved my issue of a sticking or rough sliding wick. Hope this works.

I see this question was asked a couple of weeks ago, and I don’t know if you’ve gotten the answer yet, so I’m going to try and offer some answers. I was having this same problem when I replaced my wicks (2 heaters) and it drove me crazy trying to figure out what I had done wrong. After reinstalling the wick into the wick holder, (the part with the teeth) put it back onto the draft tube. (At this stage , you only want to put the wick inside the holder then on to the heater) The piece with the knob that raises the wick should be done separately. It acts as a rack and pinion system. Next, Replace the wick adjusting knob onto its shaft while and rotate it clockwise 3/4 of the way making sure to hold the latch to prevent the safety shut off from being activated. While holding the latch, place the “wick holder assembly” on to the wick holder that’s already been placed on the heater. If these 2 pieces are done correctly, you should have no problem getting the heater to shut off properly. I know it sounds complicated, and I wish I could make it more clear for you, but I hope this helps.
