That was an Awesome video. Thank you for sharing your wealth of information And for helping the average boater to make an educated And informed decision when shopping for a pre-owned engine. God bless you, And please continue your helpful advice. I wish I had This information last year when I bought an outboard motor from a friend, that turned out to be nothing more than a HUGE paper weight. I can now approach the process of buying an outboard motor with confidence And caveats to ensure a good purchase .keep up the good work, And I will put into practice what I've learned from you Sir.

Excellent video. I've given many bad reviews for videos that waste a lot of time talking about irrelevant talk and music. Seems a lot of people like to hear the sound of their own voice and don't stick to the subject matter. This is a great video. Thanks

Good video. I also look at the color of the paint on the cylinder head and exhaust manifold. If the paint looks scorched or blued its a good indicator that the engine got too hot or is overheating when running. Thus causing damage to internal parts and gaskets. On some models a cooling tell tale spigot that starts and stops water flow can be an indicator that the head gasket is leaking exhaust gases into to water jacket. A compression test on a warm engine will verify if there is bad cylinders and if it needs to be rebuilt. Also pulling the plugs after a warm up test, check for water on the plugs. Fuel spreads and is slippery between your fingers, water kinda beads first and doesn’t feel the same. If I still cant tell I have touched my tongue to my finger to tell. If you don’t reel back in disgust than thats water on the spark plug, lol. Again, you mad a good instructional video.

Good job , but one other thing I found the hard way , after checking all the things you mentioned , and also checking for spark at each plug ( motor on ground, and controls not hooked up , so could not start ) I bought a 1996 75 hp mariner with 130 psi all 3 cylinders , t & t ,with about a 400.00 stainless speed prop and controls for 250.00 , I thought I hit the jackpot . Until I went to mount on the boat ! That's when I discovered the bushings on the steering arm swivel tube , and the motor mounts are SHOT . Has so much play that it must be fixed before mounting , probably wouldn't even be able to steer the thing ! And you know how much of a job that is , I think it's gonna be cheaper, and a lot easier for sure , to just buy a whole different mid section with the mount still intact . found one on e-bay for 400.00 + shp. , so now my 250.00 "jackpot" , is turning into a 700.00 just "OK" deal . So there you go , two things , check spark if can't start , and definitely check the play in the swivel tube and motor mounts . Keep up the good work, you do a really good job of explaining things .

This partially helped, but I'm looking at a 1997 Honda 5hp 4 stroke single cylinder outboard with a pull start. Haven't physically looked at it yet, the seller says all good and I can inspect it any time I want, so now I know the basics to check on it. Never realized how much stuff was on the big boy motors before!

Funny that you used a Force Outboard in the Video !! Everyone says a Force is a junk motor, But I've had several, Both older ones, And newer Mercury Edition . And I loved them !! Great motors !! Simple !!!! But Great !!!!. I had a newer 120hp that I swapped to 7 different boats because it was such a great motor !!. Sold it and wish I had it back !!

I've been redoing boats mainly outboards and older bass boats as side job for 10 yrs now and I've yet to come across a good FORCE outboard never fails for one to go out time or 2 and needs work of some sort minor to major poor design features my opinion N beware of the first generation of oil injection they tend to quit while runnin and sound no alarm i run 40 to 1 in those motors anyway with no ethanol gas jus incase they do decide to quit Just for heads up. PS my personal favorite used outboard is any of the mercury black max series. If ain't black take it back. Good video good info

Awesome thank you for these tips !! I’m a Jetski mechanic and don’t really know that much about outboard boat motors lol I’m looking into getting a Boston whaler for me and the family and learning what to look for when buying a boat with a motor .. I plan on flushing the motor every time I come out of the salt water because I know what that shit does to the inside of your water jackets lol . And the amount of sand that is in the salt water lol ... i kind of what the two stroke because it’s cheaper to rebuild but kinda what the four Stoke because it’s a little more quiet but sucks to rebuild lol uhh 🤦🏽♂️ need some help

Great info! I am wondering about old and new 150hp-200 motors. Can an old motor preform just as well? Whats the benefits? Trying to add a tri-toon to older pontoon project to get it planing cheap. Also would love to see you get a go pro. It would make your video much easier to watch. you're such a wealth of knowledge I would love to see it. Thanks again and great job!
