I hope it's the first video of the "How to Choose a Rolling Mill" series. Andrew, you explained the difference between geared and non-geared mills well, thank you! But I think that it isn't a critical parameter. There is a lot of geared electric motors on the market that can be used for the direct rolling mill upgrading. So, I know that it's better to buy the electric mill per saltum, but not for those people who have not money for it at the first onset. it's my humble opinion that most critical parameter of rolling mills is a maximum thickness capacity. For most mills it's about 5 millimeters that good for sheet or wire making, but it is not enough for some cases like a massive cuban chain shaping for example.

Thank you for clearing that up! I am new to all this and videos like this help me so much. Sometimes I have no idea if I really need something or even what it does. Your videos have been very helpful in deciding if I need something right away and what is the best kind to get. I am definitely going to save up for the geared mill, I am not aging quite as gracefully as I had hoped. Keep those videos coming!

Mr. Barry, I really, really appreciate your videos. As of today, I have no intention of working with gold or silver, but you have taught me so much through your videos that I am considering expanding.... I have not even sold my first piece; I am still practicing.... I gave started with reclaimed copper electrical wire, 10, 12, and 28 AWG.... annealing and pickling. Thank you because now I can get the shapes I want. Please ask you spouse to give you a hug for helping me.

Thanks for the informative videos. After watching I finally decided to purchase a Durston Agile C130, and what a choice! As a hobby jeweller I initially bought a very basic and cheap Indian made one, it was ok, but only just. The Durston is a cut above and I'm very pleased with it.

Great video, thanks! The only rolling mill I've used is my instructor's massive floor model, so I really appreciate understanding the difference between the table top models (which is all I'm likely to ever own!)

Thank you very much Andrew as always !!! I am excited to say that I have recently purchased a used rolling mill from a retired Goldsmith's estate. The meal is gray in color and has no manufacturer's name on it. This meal has a large crank handle on each side and has a high quality metal stand. I am assuming that I can take off my choice of either handle as it is ambidextrous(not sure ) I have not had an opportunity to examine it closer and experiment with it, but I am very excited ! Thank you for all of your very informative videos and know that you mean the world to a beginning Jewler !! Thank you, Cory

Due to injury I am replacing my mill with a electric version, in Australia Durston are certainly not good vale, unless you are a well healed business put simply they are grossly overpriced for hobbyist or amateur like myself they are just not viable, the good thing that Pepe tools in the USA produce a mill of the same quality for half the price

I don’t know how you read my mind, but I’ve been mulling over rolling mills for the last month. It would be nice to have your opinion on combination rollers and how to use them to save money by making your own wire, sheet, etc. Thanks for all of your advice. 👍🏼😀

Kaylie Eldredge I buy led lights (office desk size, adjustable and runnable). I try to pick them up on Amazon lightning sales. I have 4(so far) and have spent around $100. I have limited space and they reside around the apartment when they’re not at my bench. 😀

Just trying to wrap my head around the difference of DD and GR models. If I was using a direct drive roller to roll out the same piece 5 times and adjusting for thickness each time, would this not make the effort required the same and effectively negate the benefits of a geared roller? I think both would require the same amount of cranks, no? What am I missing? possibly an annealing step with the direct drive? Great Video none the less, TY.

I've seen another rolling mill that has a flat plate instead of the round roller on the bottom. What is the difference there?

both mills are fine.. the single-geared one is more cost-effective. the gearbox one is easier on the arm if you're trying to flatten metal 1mm at a time. but in all honesty that's not how a mill should be used.. using the dial on the top of the mill you can take up to 0.2, 0.3 off each role depending on the work hardening of your metal.. anything more than that and the mental stress will pit your metal. it only shows in the polishing, which makes it a serious issue when making masterpieces.. so in the end, learn the right techniques before buying a mill.. years of work have gone into this advice.. may it serve you guys well.

I notice a lot of seasoned jewelers buy these expensive products and have never even tried less expensive things. They all seem to be of the mindset that expensive automatically means better when there are other brands or even home modified products that do the exact same thing for way less. Durston is vastly overpriced but the gear box being better is definitely a good tip.

the 5 to 1 geared Durston 130 R that I bought 6 months ago for €1850 turned out to be almost useless in comparison to the Polish-made Rodent mill that I bought for 8 times less 25 years ago. Yes Durston look good ........but the Polish machine works much better and costs considerably less
