Choosing gloves for outdoor swimming can be a bit of a minefield. We look at how neoprene gloves work, key features to look for, how to size your hands and after care. Whilst I am still searching for my perfect glove, I hope that the pointers in this video will help you decide what's important for you when choosing yours.

Do note that there are different stitching methods as well when it comes to wetsuits / neoprene accessoires. Both gloves in this example are "glued and blind stitched" which means the thread doesn't pass through the neoprene completely but gets pulled back about halfway through. The rest of the seam is glued shut. The tribord gloves here are "double blind stitched" which means this is done on both sides of the material. The extra glue on the outside is an extra security (but also to secure the thread). A little fun test to do is to blow into the glove as you would do in a latex glove and see if the air stays in, then you'll know if it's waterproof too or not :) Good advice though! I'd advice swimmers to definitely note whether or not gloves on the market are actually made out of neoprene at all too. Some gloves for swimmers out there are just overpriced pieces of XXX which contain barely any neoprene (looking at you Zone3 and Blueseventy) and thus no insulation. Take this from a diver / surfer / swimmer: never pay more than 30 bucks or so for a neoprene glove unless you're absolutely sure the construction is something super special (and ask an expert first then).

Thanks for your detailed comment Joannes, I now use the Lomo Tri-X glove which keeps my hands dry fro the first 20 minutes. I think lots of people end up giving up on gloves having accidentally made a poor shopping decision.

Great advice. I have the Blue Seventy ones and they are useless, they also drag! The O'Neill Psycho 3mm have been amazing for 9 degree water so far... about 45 minute swim. Scored them second hand, 18 bucks. A wee bit too large, but they really work!

That's right . I have already one the same mark but I used them only for catching fish 🐠 they are so good and so soft 😇😇 the tribord devices are so useful in morroco than others products like cressi - Omer - beuchat - O'Neil..... thanks Rachel 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻💥

using that tribord 3mm great glove for about an hour in 7 celcius. although i am lucky because the last twenty mins i rev it up with freestyle other wise fingers would be getting cold. if the weather is rough fingers are colder because its harder to get a rythm.

Hello Rachel! Thank you so much for your inspiring and informative videos! I admire your adventurous spirit😊, a kindred soul! I wonder have you done a video about how to best get into warm clothing after a swim? I have seen people in swim pictures in large PONCHOS. Do you try to change immediately, or do you drive home in wetsuit/bath in suit? I’m a relative newbie so trying to figure this part out! Thank you again so much I am thrilled to have discovered your channel.🐟🐠🐟🐬🐳

Hi its me again! I'm looking at replacing my gloves this year as well. My old ones are only 2mm thick and I got chilly hands! Have you ever tried mittens instead of gloves? I saw a swimmer wearing them last year but sadly didn't ask her about them. I've found O'Neil sell 5mm and 7mm mittens, but before I spend lots of money I'd love your opinion on them?? Thanks Rachel!

Does the taking gloves and suit off in the sea work OK? Bit concerned about managing it in the waves breaking on the shingle?
@EverydayAthleteRach
@EverydayAthleteRach 2 жыл бұрын
Yes it works but you’d want it to be a bit calm. Otherwise having a bottle of like warm water to pour in the neck one on land will help.

@@EverydayAthleteRach Thanks... good tip. The North sea can be a bit turbulent and beach levels under the water level very up and down so its a bit hard to find a safe enough spot. ~Will take warm in flask ready!! Love your videos as a nebie to sea swims inautumn and winter.

mostly using hands to measure how cold i am and wearing neoprene socks though that makes huge difference
@EverydayAthleteRach
@EverydayAthleteRach 4 жыл бұрын
I used to use my hands to do that, but a friend challenged me saying, with the circulation running so close to the surface in your hands and feet, it maybe your hands that are accelerating the cooling. I switched to wearing gloves and booties and it extended my comfortable swim duration by 2 or 3 times, and I felt much happier. Now to find the perfect pair!

@@EverydayAthleteRach This is also my experience, if the hands are warm , the rest of body is much less effected so the overall feeling of cold deeper inside is slower to come about .

Why for brand new wetsuits/gloves made of neoprene, need to soak them in water ?
@EverydayAthleteRach
@EverydayAthleteRach 2 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure what your question is here. I don't pre-soak my gloves, I put them on dry and let the neoprene do it's job by keeping most of the water out. 🏊😃
