ProTip from a restaurant server: ask your server or bartender for a sample or two before ordering a whole glass/bottle! Most places are happy to do it and it saves you $$ and hassle if you don't like a particular one or are refusing to choose between two. 😄🍷

As an employee at a winery, I'd also recommend going out to a winery (if you have one locally) and doing a wine tasting during your free time. It's our JOB to help you learn more about wine in general and to help you find something you like! Most wineries have bottles for every budget and have very friendly staff. If you're new to wine, let them know and they can guide you.

The best thing for me to get into wine was when my friend hosted a wine tasting party. Everyone brought a bottle (I literally just went into the store and grabbed a random bottle because I didn't know anything) so for the price of one bottle of wine I got a fun night with friends and got to try like 10 different wines and start making notes about what I like

I'd recommend going to a wine tasting! You get to sample a few wildly different types of wine, and there will always be an expert there to help you distinguish which flavors you liked/disliked (Be wary about upselling though!)

I love moscato! Pinot Grigio is okay. White Zinfandel is good. I have yet to find a red that I like. My advice: drink what you want and ignore the snobs. I am often told that white does not pair with what I am eating or something equally ridiculous. "It pairs with my friggin' tastebuds" is my response. If you like it, drink it. Also, if you are buying for a friend - the first question you should ask if "red, white, or blends?"
@ZoeLeeJames
@ZoeLeeJames 7 жыл бұрын
Cienna is quite a nice red because its quite sweet, but yes I'm only now starting to not hate reds haha not necessarily like them though lol although when i went to europe i enjoyed their reds! there is also a good red at a Winery called st. annes near where I live (in victoria australia, near melbourne) and its called magenta i think and is so good! Certain wine does pair with certain foods, but i fully agree you should still drink what you want no matter the pairing rules haha

I tend to rely on a staff sommelier at the local liquor store. I tell them what I need either from a recipe or the food I'll serve it with and a price range, and I'll get about 3-4 recommendations. But when it comes to picking beer, I always know what I'm looking for. Beer is easier to sample around and try, as it's usually served in single-serving containers, and there's no shame in having a beer on my back porch or some shit. And I never worry about whiskey. Whiskey is easy: I know I'll like it.

Is there shame in having wine on my back porch?! I do it a lot. (Well, my pavilion because I do not have a porch on the back of my house.) In my husband is a beer and whiskey snob. He is very particular about the beer and whiskey that he drinks and he will take part in some good matured ribbing towards anyone who drinks a "lesser" beer or whiskey.

Highly highly recommend going to wine tastings! My local wine and spirits store does wine tastings every Friday night, and even more often around busy weekends like Thanksgiving and Christmas. And if you go often enough, the attendant at your local store will probably start to learn your specific tastes and find it even easier to recommend wines for you to try.

While I'm a huge whisky fan, personally I can't rave enough about pairing a sweet wine with a dessert. Any dessert. A chocolate bar and a sweet wine tastes so good together, and can make for a great dessert at home that everyone will rave about. Oh, if you do make a whisky episode, hit me up, I'd love to help out, even if just with a Skype. Love whisky and review them regularly.

When I was in college, my roommate and I would choose our wine based on the animals on the labels - it was 100% like choosing a book based on its cover, but it was a great way to figure out what we liked. We went for the $6-10 range and managed to find a discount wine emporium with a ridiculously varied selection at discounted prices. I think what worked best for me was starting with a pink wine (happy middle ground!), determining what I liked about it, and branching out from there. Once you can find an adjective or two to describe what you do or don't like, you can explore from there - don't be afraid to be adventurous!

My maternal grandfather made his own wine and passed the recipe onto my mother. I do not think I have it, though. Need to look. Red grapes and used the stems = a bit tanic. Although a bit dry, it gave it a rich woodsy flavor and was well balance in sweetness (sugar ^ ).

My favorite tip is finding the grape varieties that aren't as well-known! They can be a lot less expensive, but just as good. Examples: I found out I love aromatic whites like Viognier and Torrontes, which run me like... $10-$12 a bottle.

I would definitely recommend wine tastings! If you're lucky enough to live near a wine region, these are often free at the cellar door, or there may be other events near you. That way you can try a bunch of different wines and find out what you like, and even buy a few bottles of your favourites. Another option is wine tasting party, where all your friends chip in a small amount and you try a selection of wines :)

You can't go wrong with wine from Chile, Argentina and California. From Chile and Argentina to me are better than California and they are not too expensive. If you see Concha y Toro, pick it up. Look for the label where it says it is coming from Mendoza Argentina which is the best place.

Check out wine trails near your house if you're interested in tasting a lot of wines from a nice range of wineries! Depending on the state you'll either have to pay for tastings at each place our it'll be free (thanks PA!). And there's usually snacks at the tasting bars. Just search "Wine trails near me" and you should find some awesome ones. :) Anyone near Pittsburgh, seriously try out the Southwest Passage Wine Trail. 8 wineries in one day and you can hit up Ohiopyle in the middle!

For those who want to get a bottle for home, keep in mind the color when you're stowing it away: Red wines are stored best in dark, dry locations (cellars,basements,etc), or at least away from sunlight. Do not refrigerate these or you will screw with the taste. White and Rose wines are better stored in the fridge, and tend to be best when kept cold.

1:07 "the price of wine can be up to twice as much in a restaurant as they are in a store" So sweet that he says that. A $12 bottle of wine costs $60 at a restaurant. $65.25 with tax. After you add the tip It's about $78. So that's more than 6 times as much. How about Netflix and chill with a good $25 bottle of wine and a 25 cent candle. Romance.

My wife and I are new to wine - we only started trying them a few years after college, because wines were stigmatized as being pretentious and snooty when most everyone else was indulging in local craft beers and hard liquor. That being said, we've found a few that we both agree are worth it for special occasions - the Hurricane Class 5 from Naples Winery (in Tin City) was a nice local discovery and I highly recommend it if you prefer sweet wines :) www.thenapleswinery.com/hurricane-class-5.html

Cheap wine is as good as the expensive stuff if you just aerate it enough - either by a fancy thing you put on the bottle neck, or just... blitz it in a food processor. Otherwise avoid wines that contain sulphates, they'll give you a headache /while/ you're drinking it.

how to like a type of wine: try it with someone who really likes that type of wine and can help you figure out wtf you're supposed to be tasting lol. (first wine i liked was chardonnay, specifically the more buttery kinds instead of the crisp kinds, because that's what my parents' neighbor likes lol also i'm fortunate enough to live in northern california within driving distance of a lot of different winery areas, so going wine tasting is a nice way to figure out what you like if that's an option for you. just maybe not napa if you're cheap. unless you're going with a group that includes your parents and they might pay for you :P also maybe if you're going to talk about it at all, i'd say maybe recommend doing just a little research on the names of types of grapes, so you don't do something like what i did and get confused by something called a "dry riesling" when you thought "riesling" was just another kind of sweet dessert-ish wine (it's actually just another kind of grape, common in south africa. i just happened to have tried a really sweet riesling the first time i came across it lol)

It does have to do with taste, as it's about pairing wine with food. If you prefer white with beef, go for it. I'm just telling folk what I've learned from being trained as a waiter.

Rockerchavnerdemo yes. You were trained as a waiter to tell people what goes with which food. You were trained that way because it's an etiquette rule. A person who likes beef won't be more likely to like red wine. Which is why the whole wine pairing thing is bullshit. Beef doesn't taste like red wine. There's countless ways to cook and season meat. Syrah doesn't taste anything like pinot noir but they are both reds. See how ridiculous it is to pair wine, now?

I just can’t watch this. These people are way too douchey. How are people who look and dress like kids going to teach us “how to adult”.

Ah, missed opportunity you guys!! You should have added one cork to the glass for each new take you had to do. (and not cover it up with a banner, of course)
