My favorite red is a blend of Cab Sav, Cab Franc, Merlot and a trace of Malbec. Great drinking but hard to get here in NZ. I find Pinot Noir, NZs most popular red, too soft for me, lacking body. A great video, thanks

Barbera is a pretty good, easy drinking one too :). Maybe Primitivo/Zinfandel too, they tend to be full body though.

I just started getting into wines after swearing I'd never drink wine cuz my mom let me try a Chardonnay once and I thought I was gonna die. I actively avoid whites right now because I don't know enough about em. My first bottle was a Merlot blackberry 50/50 blend grown right in my home state of Louisiana. I bought a couple of bottles of that, and now I have a full merlot and a Pinot noir waiting for a tasting.

I followed the advice by some and went with pinot as a start but didn't like the red fruit / cherries taste. I however like black fruits taste and smell. Guess I will stick with CS/Merlot to start my wine drinking journey

For a lower acid red, try Merlot. However, reds are seldom made in a sweeter style - you could try an Australian sparkling Shiraz or Brown Brothers Cienna. For lower acid whites, try Viognier or Gewurztraminer, or a warm climate Pinot Gris. As a general rule, if the alcohol is naturally lower (≥12%), it's likely the fermentation was stopped early retaining some sugar in the wine. So lower alcohol often means sweeter wines.

With great sadness had to give up my red wine due to teeth staining. To many repairs over the years. Consider it the healthiest alcohol drink out there. Especially fruity red sangria with all the fruits lemon lime tangerine.
