When faced with the decision between Nitro 4.88s and 5.29s I really struggled to find any good information. I knew that the 4.88s were an improvment but had also heard that some guys with the 4.88s didnt feel much of a difference. Last minute i took my frinds advice who said " anything worth doing is worth over doing". So i went with 5.29s, but was it too much? After the install the truck is geared perfectly for daily driving with the 5.29s. No more hunting for gears, more responsive throttle, better gas mileage, more relaxing ride, more crawling power, shifts into 6th gear on the highway and cruises comfortably.

I have a 94 Land Cruiser and am looking at regearing. You mentioned that your Tacoma was searching for gears and downshifting a lot, my LC does the same thing with the 35's I am running (BFG). A lot of the people on I8Mud say that with 35's that 4.88 are best for the LC. But after talking to a local guy that does a lot of gear installs I have decided to go 5.29 and lockers on my LC. Watching your video just reaffirms my decision.

Hey Maxx, just wanted to thank you for putting out all of the great content over the years. After watching videos of yours, like this one inspired me to do upgrades to my 2016 Tacoma as well. This past weekend we made the trip over the pass( We live just West of Olympia) to have Just Differentials install some 5.29's in my truck. Couldn't be any happier or excited about the experience from those guys and how it turned out, the difference driving back over the pass was huge driving in 3rd and 4th gear on the way over the pass, to driving in 5th and 6th gear(I have the Manual) driving back over was so much more relaxing and less stressful feeling goes through you. SO thanks again and keep the videos rolling.

Hey Maxx, i find this video an eye opener and helpful. I was leaning towards the 4.88s for some time now and when i watched your video, it gave me a new perspective. I definitely do prefer the low end power as my current setup on my taco is getting heavier with all the mods i have done so far. i have a TRD-OFF ROAD manual transmission with 35s and some accessories on and i'm always shifting gears and definitely lacks the get-up and go that i miss when i first drove it off the lot. The 5.29 will definitely be my next major upgrade. Great video!! Keep them coming...

Great video. Lots of misconceptions about gas mileage versus RPM. Every engine has a different power/torque vs rpm curve. When you map power/torque over a fuel consumption vs rpm you can see power efficiency over RPM. To get good fuel mileage you want to keep the engine in the RPM range that has the greatest power/torque efficiency. You derive the desired RPM from power/torque/fuel-consumption, not the other way around.

I love my 5.29 gears in my 93 4 runner. But the shop that rebuilt my rear end was trying to talk me out of the 5.29 because the pinion gear has less area to contact the ring gear. They were pushing hard for the 4.88 gears. But with my lil 3.0 and 35 inch tires it works out perfect. It put it back to stock feeling power and my Speedo is right on with my 35's. The shop then showed me a 5.29 pinion gear that was sheared off. But way more power I het from, the 5.29. I put a 4.30 in just to try it out and can't even think about using 5 th gear. But breaking in the gears sucks. I just put an Eaton E locker in and new bearings and seals in the rear end. Still in break in mode. I live in Bellingham Wa so I might see you on the trails sometime.

Best way to explain a re-gear like you had done in your truck is if anyone has ever riden a mountain bike before. When you switch the gears as you pedal the bike and you can feel the difference in how hard you have to work. In a low gear yes your legs are moving faster but they are hardly trying inorder to get you to move. To high of a gear and your not doing to many rpm's, but you are having to push a lot harder then you normally would. That's just a good way to explain the difference if you have never experienced it in a vehicle before. It was for me anyway. K have a good day everyone!!

Fuel efficiency of the engine is different at different rpms and also at different throttle positions, so its crazy complicated to know the best rpm to run as driving conditions are very dynamic. Fuel efficiency is also affected by how the engine ecu is programmed. It isn’t always for maximum fuel economy due to power and emissions requirements. Gear ratio steps in the Tacoma 6spd auto are kind of strange and only Toyota could explain why they chose them as they don’t have even spread like a typical auto or manual. In addition, it seems that to protect the transmission, they program it to shift out of overdrive at a relatively low throttle position when requiring higher power delivery, especially at lower rpms where heat from loading/lugging it could affect its life. So regearing to get higher rpms allows the Tacoma to hold the gear longer as you will have more power available due to the higher rpms, but also, the programming of the shifting based on throttle position is allowing the transmission to hold the overdrive gears longer as the higher rpms mean less lugging. Generally lower rpms are more fuel efficient but only if you have enough power in the engine at those rpms and you are not being detrimental to other things, like heat and stress and emissions etc. If you run, more weight, more wind and rolling resistance, bigger tires etc, you need to over-correct the engine rpm to get more power and better throttle position which will effectively and generally give you better fuel economy than stock gearing for the same exact driving conditions.

It would probably be best to let the dealer flash the ECU like a new truck. It has the ability to "learn" driving styles.

I just bought a 2019 TRD Off Road, and this is the first vid (and subsequent comment section) that I actually felt like engaging. You being from the Northwest made it even better. It's been tough finding a place online to discuss these things in a civil manner without the pretentious douche bags coming out of the woodwork screaming "mall crawler!" if I don't install a certain type of tire haha. I have no idea what direction I'm going to take my mods in, but this is something I'm definitely going to be looking into at some point. Even on my test drive, I can already tell that as much as I loved the truck, some of the "searching for gears" statements in this vid certainly felt validated. With all the "research" Ive done thus far, I know some changes will need to be made if I'm going to get the full potential out of my truck. I appreciate the vid. It was entertaining and informative. Dang. Thought he was gonna say that 4.88 is great, but 5.29 is devine!

I follow TW pretty much every day, and didn't see anything about 5.29's even being available at this time. 4.88 were the only option for 3rd gen Tacos as far as I could tell. I must have missed the chatter if there ever was any of the Nitro 5:29's availability. It's truly a liberating feeling once you change gears, huh? Back in the 90's, I had an F150 with the 5.0, and something like 27" tires. I jacked that truck to the moon with a 3" body lift + 6" suspension lift, and 36" Swampers. Ran it this way for a few months and then regeared from 3:55 to 4:56 and that truck came back to life with extra ummph to boot!

There is a 5.29 thread on TW. They have been available for several months.

Thanks Marcus. I looks like it was just this summer that the 5.29 thread got started. It never popped up in my view when I clicked on "New Posts". So far it looks like just a handful of folks have been swapped to 5.29, but all are AT guys. Looking forward to hearing how it feels with the MT (like I have).

Enjoyed the video. 2 months ago I got a 2018 Tacoma 4x4. I’m interested in doing the same thing. Where would I purchase the gears and when I take it to a shop about how much would a job like this cost. For me the searching for a gear thing is annoying. Any information you can pass on would be appreciated. Thanks

Regearing will help power and mpg. Its something I should have done on my Jeep. I will do it for sure on the new Jeep when I do the tire upgrade. By the way, I saw your trailer parked at one of the Sand Flats Campgrounds the other day. I think it was Tuesday. I kept looking for your truck but never saw it.

Hey man, what type of MPG are you getting after your regear? Also if you are ever around HWY 12 and Rimrock lake, NF-325 on Bethel ridge is a great drive, but it does get a little tight.

Will these new gears give you better rock crawling capability? I’m asking if the gears let you travel at very slow speeds over uneven terrain. Thanks

I found in manual mode I can drop the RPMs to around 1700-800 cruising at 60

I'm also thinking about traveling to get gears installed. Any tips on breaking in the gears for the journey back? Lol seems like freeway driving is one thing to avoid. Did you just drive slow and stop frequently? Thanks!

I got a stock 19 trd sport. It’s a manual transmission. I find the gearing a little high for my taste. I like to do some slower rock crawling. It’s alright now but I’d like to put on a 3 inch lift with slightly bigger tires. What gearing would you recommend. And what matches the best with a 3” lift. Max speed limit here is 55 so I don’t plan to race a long.

What’s the MPG your getting with the new gears?did you have to recalibrate your speedometer? How much did the re-gearing set you back?

4.88's on 35" tires in my manual trans XJ and it's geared a bit too high - 3k rpm at just over 80mph, but fantastic for climbing stuff

Maxx Powell; Very true. Yeah I guess a 6spd would help some for me, but honestly 80+mph is really at the upper limit of what's safe in a 90's Jeep so kind of a natural speed limit.

Hey Max, great video! Loved all the b roll shots too, like how you spliced them through out the video. As far as tuning you should look into ovtune. He tuned my truck and it made a massive difference. I am running 34s on stock gearing, and normal daily driving is fine but that is because the supercharger. Off road when I am crawling I definitely feel I could use a regear for more low end power. Looking forward to the moab video 🤘🏼
