Hey guys, just wanted to make an important update on this video. The JB waterweld did not up and I developed a leak again. I just posted a new video on the ultimate fix that will stop the leak from the fuel strainer opening once and for all. Check it out 👉kzfaq.info/get/bejne/o8VzaamYusyWpqM.html

Be thankful you have a plastic tank. I have a 968 with the similar tank but the early cars with the steel tanks are a huge pain.

I did it, and the new strainer held the 78 in.-lbf. torque without budging! THANK YOU, Dean!

Just bought a Porsche 944 Turbo and it had a small fuel leak that I am about to attack. Going to take care of other fuel line related parts once I get the parts. Thanks for sharing this.

No problem, keep an eye out for future videos. I replaced the hard lines and rubber hoses with all new -6an hose and fittings, documenting eveything.

This is a great series. I bought an ‘88 951 in 2002 that was my daily driver till 2012 when I got a 2007 Cayman S that became the daily ride. The 951 sat in my garage since then. But I recently retired from working so I sold the Cayman and decided to rejuvenate the old 951. Three weeks ago it developed a leak at the fuel tank so I started a similar project to yours except I’m just replacing parts with OEM’s. Then I ran into the same situation with the fuel tank strainer sleeve spinning in its housing in the fuel tank. My question is, are you satisfied with the job that the JB WATERWELD PUTTY did to seal the sleeve back into the tank? Thanks again for your help.

Hey Gary that's great to hear you decided to keep the 951 and restore it. I am very happy with how the JB waterweld has held up. I have yet to get the car on the road but there has been fuel in the tank for about a year now and no leaks.

Deancent Garage I’ve gotten the tank, strainer, new pump, and filter all done...used the WaterWeld and no leaks after a week. My next project is bleeding the clutch hydraulics. Before I quit driving the car I had to replace the clutch master cylinder due to leaking. The shop that replaced it didn’t bleed it correctly and I always had trouble with the pedal staying down close to the floor. Only drove it shortly after that so mows the time to get it right. Do you have any tips for that? Thanks again for your help.

That is great Gary, sounds like you're making good progress. Here's a great video that should help you bleed the clutch system. Https://kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rcqWYJCk2t3Vp2Q.html

I had the same problem…fuel strainer came out with the sleeve and had troubles getting it back in. Instead of what you did, I cut two small slits in the side of the opening and used JB Weld epoxy and Marine weld. Unfortunately, neither held more than 6 months. Now the leak has returned and am now considering an actual plastic weld using a hot iron and stainless steel mesh to weld the slits. Any input or suggestions would be appreciated. This has been going for the last two years. And yes starting is an issue due to the fuel pressure (or lack of) but I think this is another issue.

Yup, unfortunately mine did not hold either. I ended up getting this and have not seen a drop since. It's pricey as hell but beats replacing the tank imo. 928srus.com/products/fuel-tank-repair-sleeve-boss-all-928-fuel-tanks-78-to-95

This 928 fuel strainer sleeve… looks like it is installed through the inside of the fuel tank (photos inside the tank). How did you manage to install it and that yellow piece into the tank?
@DeancentGarage
@DeancentGarage Жыл бұрын
@@glow9999 I went in through the top of the tank where the sending unit is. I first dropped a starightened coat hanger through both openings then slid the sleeve over the coat hanger and the sleeve nearly dropped into place. Maneuvered it into place from the fuel statiner opening, removed the coat hanger then installed the fuel strainer. Took less than 10 minutes. Just make sure the part sticking out on the threaded insert is facing down, need to be on the side, it prevents the sleeve from spinning while tigehting.

@@DeancentGarage that’s a great way of installing that. It certainly won’t fall outwards when tightening it with the strainer then. Then the yellow piece is not a requirement, I presume. It’s just there for display?

@@DeancentGarage using this 928 sleeve, you didn’t have to use any JB Weld? Looks like it’s designed with the seals, it shouldn’t leak at all. See below. I tried to edit the message but couldn’t, so I added another reply.

Hey Joseph, I'm assuming you're referring to the strainer. Short answer - it leaked and an alternative fix has been used. Long answer - It likely would have been alright if I hadn't gouged out the plastic with a knife trying to make clearance to reinstall the threaded insert. A small leak was present due to the slight gouge in the plastic. So I had to remove the fuel tank strainer and upon doing so the threaded insert came loose again. I'll be uploading a video shortly on the fix. I used a 928 fuel tank threaded insert fix made of aluminum. It's an aftermarket piece that fixes this exact issue and worked perfect, just a bit pricey.

You SHOULD have put some Anti Seez on the threads of the strainer, And I change my strainer every 5yrs due to the crappy ethanol fuel.....

If was cleaned afterwards, that was just the test fit before the jb weld set to make sure the aluminum ring didn't distort while hammering into place. Thank you for watching! 🙏

It's a plastic tank, it was spotless inside after it was cleaned. And if anything was possibly leftover it would have been caught by the filters.
