In this episode of Driveway Dudes, Paul and Will shows you how to clean your EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) Valve after it was removed.
This is a home experiment and an unbiased use of JLM Diesel Air Intake & EGR Cleaner. Similar products are available.

Hey guys, I have a 2011 1.4 CRDi Hyundai i20. It struggles to start, more so when cold. Turns over fine but takes 10 to 20 secs to fire up. Its been suggested to me, by a trusted mechanic, that a faulty or clogged EGR valve could well be the cause. Does this sound feasible to you? If so, would using the spray EGR cleaner in the way shown in your 'how to clean the EGR without removing' video be likely to yield results, or would removing it be the smarter option? And if it's best removed before cleaning, would immersing the valve body in a liquid degreaser achieve similar results to those shown in this video?

Hi Andy, Has your mechanic carried out an OBD/EOBD scan? If so, what did it tell him? Is your car throwing up any faults on the dash? EGR issues would generally trigger the EML on the dash. What is the mileage on the engine? Some high milers can have low engine compression and even if on just one cylinder, it can lead to cold start issues. Has he checked the condition of the battery and possibly faulty heater/glow plug/s? Using EGR cleaning spray is the least expensive process of elimination. If you can access the EGR valve easily then removing and cleaning would be the better option. If this doesn't solve it, consider a cylinder compression test. Hope this helps

Could you use brake cleaner instead of the EGA cleaner to clean it ?

Brake cleaner works better

Brake cleaner needs grease or oil free environment. It is also not good for rubber and plastic seals or parts. A better product to use would be a carb cleaner if EGR cleaner is not available.

Blank the egr and delete it of the ecu along with deleteing your dpf and you have a pefect error free engine bullut proof hdi engine

Yes, the 1.6hdi engine is an excellent engine if regularly maintained. Your suggestion may be good for the mechanically minded person with access to tools and tech but for the everyday person?

When your egr was getting blocked did it say egr monitor bank 1 result fail

@@stadia8k732 On Citroen C4 1.6 HDI 2004-2010 it says after starting the engine, PIIIIIPPPP (Antipollution) error on a central console screen and yellow turbine "check engine" lights all the time on a dashboard. One solution is to drive in high rpm in third gear on a highway so the engine warm's up good and hot air to burn carbon on EGR until the 'check engine' light OFF (at least 10-15 minutes driving). It worked for me few times but I think it's a hillbilly solution. Just remove it sometimes and clean it...
