Your method is very sound, and I appreciate you posting it so that folks can learn. I've been detailing my own vehicles and engines for about 55-years. I have tried various methods and solutions, and for me, it does make a difference. In fact, I just finished detailing my 2013 Volkswagen BUG, and it looks better than new, especially the engine compartment. I was pleasantly surprised to see that you and I are using the same finishing spray from Stoner! I do use a different cleaner but in the end, mine comes out looking just as well as you're finished work. Heck, with the right technique I'm able to do it right from my chair. I'm not able to stand so I have to improvise.

Excellent point about doing this before selling a car. The very first thing I do when looking at a used vehicle is popping open the hood to see how clean it is to determine if I even want to spend the time and effort of looking over the rest of the car.

So much more satisfying to watch than those “clean my room with me” videos. People should make more “clean my car engine with me” videos.

Thanks for the video it taught me something, however i'd add 2 notes, 1) Brush engine bay after spraying the degreaser as it isn't enough to just spray then rinse.. 2) It's better to give it some distance when spraying with pressure washer as it might damage some small wires.. just my view

Nice job. I’ve preferred to use compressed air to help dry the engine after the initial cleaning. Using a sponge to wipe large areas as well.

Hello, I know this video is 5 years old , but I watched it last night and followed your instructions. I covered the electrical components and powered wash my engine. Man You just saved me so much money. I detailed the car myself and it looks owesome engine looks like brand new. Now my wife wants me to clean her car engine too. Keep up the good work!!!

Great video, I used to have a 06 Toyota Tundra and I cleaned the engine bay every other year and never had an issue. I definitely got my money's worth when I sold it.

great job man,you are good a what you doing, I use to work a hand car wash down in Miami in 1980's and I did engine clean shampoig in the carpet and I remember the smaile of satisfaction on the costumer faces I used to charge $ 45.00 dollars for hand carwash,carpet shampoo and engine clean in the 80's and our costumers love the job we did in their cars

I use an old soft paint brush instead of a tooth brush. A toothbrush I feel might be too hard and stiff. I also find WD40 when sprayed on plastic engine parts such as battery housings, air filter housings, etc and brushed then wiped clean with a rag brings old parts up like new. I live in dusty hot Queensland, Australia.

first thing i want to say is thank you for taking your time to make this video to aide people in cleaning their engines. i am a mechanic with 17 yrs of experience and i specialize in automotive wiring. this is constructively meant to aide you in the future. what ive always found to be PARAMOUNT in electrical protection against both corrosion and water intrusion. dielectric grease being used in all electrical connections even when not intending to clean the engine its a very good way to protect all vehicles against dreaded electeical gremlins which more times than not is simple dirty correded or wet electrical connectors being the weak link in any electrical system. it does become time consuming and this isnt necessarily meant if your detailing another persons vehicle but if its your own vehicle and you have a hour or so it would be highly recomended for the life of electrical connections.. otherwise i did learn something about detailing and thats why i came here.. hopefully i didnt come across in the wrong way i was actually hoping to share some knowledge ive learned over the last 17 yrs. thanks for your time and hope i see more vids from you in the future.

Excellent article on detailing. I love to keep the engine just as nice as the outside and I think Trim Shine will help a great deal. It is good that you gave that tip about making a good impression. It never fails to amaze me the number of people and even DEALERS that fail to do this. How many times do you look a a car for sale on the internet and they don't have the decency to get the gravel off the mats.

Your last point adds lots of value when you talk about car sale. I got a 2003 Toyota Camry from a local dealer and that car was beauty queen, with in a month I found the car needs to head to trash. I lost $4000 on that deal. So now I got a new one, so I dont get cheated, Florida is utter waste in buying a used car unless until you know how to evaluate the car. Nice tip.

i used 2 bottles or purple power unhooked my battery wrapped my cold air intake "air filter" and just started hosing it down with pressure washer then after about 10 mins i sprayed it all down with the purple power let sit for like 10 mins in the shade then rinsed really good and repeated the process with purple power after rinsing really good i just sat it with hood open in direct sunlight for almost 5 hours or so cause i wasn't driving the truck then i used Tire Shine to clean all the black plastic hoses everything pretty much and it looks great no electric issue

If you have a carbureted engine then you most likely have an older engine type with distributor, rotor and of course older (and more vulnerable) wiring. I would be very careful with these types of engines as water penetration could be an issue. Rather than using the power spray technique that I show on the newer engines in my videos I would suggest that you use a more concentrated, focused approach. I would also make sure that the plug wires as well as all other wiring in the engine bay are fresh so as not to absorb any moisture. Having a can of WD40 is always advisable since it is great at spraying inside the distributor cap in case moisture somehow gets in there. THAT would be my primary concern and advice. Years ago a shade tree mechanic showed me how he detailed the engine. I was skeptical of fire hazard but he never had a problem with how he did it. He would turn the engine on for a few minutes then turn it off spray WD-40 on most everything but not the exhaust then wipe it down with a rag. It really shined. Still leary of accidentally spraying exhaust manifold and catching fire but like everything else just walking out of the house can kill you lol.

I have actually heard the opposite when buying a car. If you see an engine that looks real clean, it could be hiding problems that exist, like oil leaks etc. and that it is best not to buy a car that looks spotless under the hood. That was just one recommendation from an article about buying used cars. Nice video though.

Oh wow. I’ve been using a power spray to clean engines for a while, everyone said I was crazy.... lol.

I always use Gunk Engine Bright cleaner. That stuff is great. Spray it on let it set for about 10 minutes and rinse with your garden hose. Use a nozzle on the garden hose that will give you some high pressure.

I've detailed at a dealership for a very long time.we always cleaned our engines while the car was running and never had a problem. in fact its when a car would not be running during the clean and would have trouble starting up...

also im glad you mentioned not cleaning a " hot" engine all the stealerships ive worked for in the past powerwashed and used glossy detailing wax on still running and hot engines it always made the engine bay nice and shiny but always seemed to cause a sticky nasty to the touch surface area and many customers were put off by the smell it created... also to my horror i witnessed a moron with a power washer spraying the inside of the car due to the carpet being nasty.. and then he lifted the nozzle to spray the DASHBOARD!!!! I actually was heading back to the detail bay due to the fact i had multiple complaints about electrical issues from customers within the last 2 weeks and when i would accelerate actual water would come pouring out of the dash! yeah guess how long the detail guy had been working for us before getting fired for ruining about 10 cars? he had been working there for roughly 2 weeks... lol no one knew he had been spraying interiors with the power washer...

I too have cleaned many engine bays. I've been big proponent of Simple Green spray or equivalent with a big sudsy wheel brush. Rinse with fine spray hose nozzle (no pressure washer). Then for really dirty ones follow with degreaser, rinse again and dry with leaf blower or start engine for a couple of minutes. ( try not to start motor with chem residue as it will infiltrate the outside air vent filter and get smelly in the cabin) Last is just any old brand of tire foam and coat everywhere. Allow to drip dry and follow with leaf blower. Allow to sit overnight - this keeps the odors from getting into the inside of the car if there is a ventilation filter. Works like a charm.

Great video! One question, does the detail spray gloss attract dust and dirt? Seen many old time detailers use Armor All to make a dirty engine look good after a power wash. Then a week or so later and everything's covered in a light oily, dusty coating and you have to wash the motor all over again.

Great video, I used a water hose before, but now I'll use my pressure washer and wrap it up with total shine.

I just spray the engine with silicone and hose it off, yeah don't direct high pressure at electricals, use common sense. While it's still wet wipe down all the easy parts, takes minutes, been doing it for years

Thank you for the information! Please understand that you are wearing a dust mask. It will not filter VOCs from the spray you are using. It is not a vapor mask. I've seen too many people use dust masks in an attempt to filter vapors. Dust masks can actually do more harm than good if you are spraying chemicals.

One fatal flaw: The alternator can be damaged. I have seen this happen.

i knew a guy that used pledge furniture polish..... and it looked pretty good...fyi....

safest way to do this is some shop towels from the auto parts store and your choice of cleaner. manufacturers specifically say DO NOT PRESSURE WASH THE ENGINE.

Very useful and well made video, right to the point no waste motion. I like the Trim Shine idea, but one guy mentioned tire foam that might be a good idea as well. As for the foil, the Glad seal might work better and be safer, it clings well and seals very well compare to foil. One guy mentioned the pressure washer towards the radiator is a very bad idea; you need to keep the pressure away from the fins as they will bend inward and cause overheating if it is not detected, speaking from experience.

it's called a car wash use the degreaser at the car wash then pick Rinse and ur done .using aluminum foil may couse an electronic foult in ur wiring .don't do that the factory has already thought of water damage and how to keep that from happening.

What's wrong with soapy water and a brush after degreasing the engine? A well done job does not always come out of a spray can. As I see it you are hiding the remaining dirt under that spray product and that is not OK with me.

I do that with my toyota cars and I've never had a problem thanks😉😁
