Worried about bacteria in Your families Reverse Osmosis Drinking water system? When was the last time you cleaned and disinfected it? Is there mold growing on the outside? That can’t be good! I’m going to show you how to clean and disinfect your Reverse Osmosis system right now!
Whether you’re a DIY homeowner, plumber or water treatment professional you need to know how to properly clean and disinfect these systems. Yes, if you are on a chlorinated water source or have a UV system on well water the chances of bacteria growth is minimal but if it has been a few years since the last disinfection or installation you are definitely due! Also, you’ll need to throw away all of the filters and the membrane so plan ahead and have replacements ready.
Some tips to make sure you minimize the chances of introducing bacteria into your RO whenever you do a filter change:
1) Always make sure you wash your hands with soap and water or put on gloves before you begin.
2) Make sure your work area is clean and put down a clean cloth.
3) Be sure to keep all filters in their packaging until just before installation.
To understand the process, you’ll need to know how Reverse Osmosis drinking water systems work to clean up your drinking water. Check out this KZfaq video of mine here • HOW does a REVERSE OSM...
Also, you’ll be disconnecting the tubing during this process so if you aren’t sure how, check out this KZfaq video of mine to learn how • How to use Quick Conne...
1. Shut off the water supply to the RO system. If there is any mold on the outside of the system or the tank, now it the time to disconnect and thoroughly wash the system to remove.
2. If your RO is connected to your refrigerator or icemaker, shut off the water line going to the icemaker.
3. Open the Reverse Osmosis faucet and drain all water from the RO and storage tank.
4. Once empty, close RO faucet.
5. Open the sediment filter housing, which is the closest or first filter to the feed water line. Remove and discard the filter leaving the filter housing off.
6. Remove and discard all remaining filters and the membrane. If you have an inline post filter, leave it in place temporarily. For instructions on installing and removing filters click here. • How to REPLACE the FIL...
7. Replace all empty filters housings, except the sediment housing. There should be no filters or membrane in any housings at this point.
8. Pour one packet of Sani System Sanitizer into the sediment filter housing. Available here waterestore.ca/products/pro-p...
9. Replace the sediment filter housing with the sanitizer solution inside.
10. Put a shut off valve on the drain line in the open position.
11.Turn on the water supply to fill the RO with the sanitizing solution, as water starts to flow out of the drain line, shut the drain line off.
11. Check for leaks.
12. Allow system to fill with water. Time will vary depending on water pressure. However, system should be full within 5-10 minutes without the filters or membrane installed.
13. Turn on the RO faucet until water begins to flow out, then turn off the faucet.
14. Let system disinfect for 5 minutes without any water usage.
15. Flush RO by turning on the RO faucet and letting water run through the system for 5 minutes, or until disinfectant odor is gone, open drain line valve.
16. Shut off the water supply line. Open the RO faucet to drain the RO completely.
17. Install new filters and membrane. • How to Change Filters ...
18. Turn on the cold water supply line and check for leaks.
19. The RO system will take a couple of hours to refill, flush new membrane and filter three times allowing storage tank to refill between flushes.
20. Reconnect the RO to the refrigerator or ice maker.

Gary, like always, your videos are top notch! We had a power outage and ice storm that affected our water company's ability to deliver water to many homes in my area. We received a "boil water notice" prior to drinking and to sanitize our RO systems and replace the filters. Was so upset because I had just did all 5 filters on my 5 stage RO, sanitized it, and pressurized the holding tank to about 7 psi two months prior to this! I had no idea about the stop cock valve on the waste water. Mine never came with one from the manufacture. So I just ordered that and a electric-free leak detecting water shut off valve as well. Thanks again for all the help that you provide us!

I shocked my well, my water softener system and my RO system. I followed the procedure here for the RO system. Afterwards I took samples and sent them for testing and everything came back clean except the RO system which came back overgrown. I did remove all the filters and membrane since the system needed it but now that it is still contaminated, I don't really want to go through the same process over and eat the cost of more new components when it won't necessarily correct the problem. I believe the new RO membrane was the problem and if you can't sterilize everything I don't see what use RO is. It's too much of a pain, too expensive and the most likely part of your water system to cause you to be drinking unsafe water. Stay simple!

Great video and thank you for explaining and writing the entire process step by step. I have a 5 stage RO system. My question is how does it does the process change if you have bigger or multiple RO storage tanks? I have two RO storage tanks a 20gal and 14gal. Would I add more cleaning packets or bleach? Also it would take forever to flush the entire system 3 times after putting the new filters in. The RO tank in your video looks to be a 8-10gal tank so after flushing 3 times that would be about an easy 15gal through the filters. Since I have two tanks with about a 25gal max storage capacity would just flushing one time after replacing the filters be sufficient? Also how many times a year should this sterilization process be repeated? Thank you very much for your time🙏

Hey Gary, first your content has been a life saver, thank you! I’ve been battling with issues regarding the water continuously draining but have since solved that thanks to your videos. I just disinfected my system, changed the filters, and hooked it all back. Now my tank is filling too quickly (5 minutes or so rather than 2-4 hours). Everything in the system is new and other than that appears to be functioning well. Could the new ro membrane I installed be faulty? Or is it something else? my wife has been having stomach pains for almost a month now. being that she travels for work, she noticed that her stomach only hurt when she was home, and never on the road. she started using bottled water at home and no more stomach problems. we thought there must be something wrong with our drinking water, which is a RO system. we've had it for probably almost 10 years now. I've changed the filters a few times, but never knew there was a potential for bacteria to build up in the system and that it should be sanitized when changing the filters. the culligan salesman nor the filter replacement videos I watched ever mentioned that part! WTH? I'm so happy to have found this video and finally realize the problem. question though.. is there a way to test for bacteria in the water from the RO system? Thanks in advance!

@@GarytheWaterGuy recycling water system means the water that's been used is recycled back into reusable water, in a cycled loop. Example: clean water goes thru shower head > used water is collected > collected used water goes thru a filter system (this is where my questions is, which filter system is best) > filtered water goes into another collection that is pumped back up into the shower head. Recycled. More and more people that use RV trailers are starting to do this. The traditional RV trailer has a limited amount of clean water in a tank which is used once. In a recycling water system, that water is re-used over and over again with less water waste.

Hi Gary, great video! Could you clarify: the RO membrane normally only needs to be replaced when the TDS goes up too much, which is every 4-8 years. But the system should be sanitized once a year, and in your video you say you should discard all filters. On the other hand, when you removed the RO membrane from the housing, you put it aside (was that in order to reuse it?) . So is it ok to put the old membrane back in, if it hasn't come in contact with the disinfectant (and provided it doesn't itself look contaminated with bacteria, mold etc.)? At what point in the procedure would you put it back in? After the first flush perhaps?
@GarytheWaterGuy

Gary, This is some great information for RO system owners, pretty much step by step on how to sanitize an RO system. My question is if my system tank capacity is 3 gallons, should it be able to fill 3- 1 gallon containers? My RO system will only fill 1/2 gallon, close faucet wait 10-15 minutes then reopen to get another 1/2 gallon. What may be causing this to happen? Oh and the tank is very heavy like it's full of sentiment, will this happen.

When you install the shutoff valve on the drain line, that’s a permanent installation right? You’re cutting the tubing and putting it in, so I’m guessing you turn the valve to the “on” on position and just leave it that way when you’re done with the sanitizing.

Gary, thanks for the video. I have an old RO system and have never sanitized the whole thing. The water has a moldy taste when it is first run even after replacing the faucet which I thought was the issue, and we have had mold issues in the house before, so I suspect it got into the housing and tubing. I'm chemically sensitive but don't mind using a respirator - how much of the Sani System Sanitizer gets into the air during this process, and is any left in the water? Perhaps if we put it into the sediment filter housing outside, that should minimize fumes inside? Thanks again.

Followed the directions to the letter. Even went and bought an inline shutoff for the drain. Started filling up system with water (and a little bleach in canister 1) and when water started coming out the drain I shut the in-line shutoff off. That’s when the fun started. Water started running out a hole in the side of the faucet and before I knew it there was bleach water all over the counter and everywhere in the cabinet under the sink. It turns out there is an air gap in the faucet and water is supposed to leak out when there’s an obstruction (like a closed shutoff valve). What a royal pain in the _ _ _ this turned out to be. When I saw that water I remember the original installer having that problem too. Anyway, I rarely call for technicians but there is more to it than covered in this video. Maybe my system is special but I found the info about the air gap and that seems standard. Any idea what I need to do? After watching some other videos I think I need to put the shutoff between the faucet and the drain on the membrane. I put it on the drain leaving the faucet.
@glennthomas4159
@glennthomas4159 3 жыл бұрын
So the moral of that story is, if you have a drain line going to the faucet from the membrane, and a drain line exiting the faucet put the shutoff between the membrane and faucet. The one between the faucet and sink waste needs to always be unobstructed. If you don’t really understand this stuff it’s easy to say “I see where it ties into the sink waste so I’ll put it there.” and cause yourself a lot of grief. Needless to say I REALLY understand how it all works now! Thanks, Gary. Your videos are a great resource.

Sorry to hear about the water flooding your counter. Yes, you are correct, when you have an air gap faucet the drain line shut off would go before the faucet, not after.

How do you disinfect the HUM Water Saver 75 gpd Reverse Osmosis System yearly, when the gro75 should last 3-5yrs??? Does that mean you only get to disinfect every 3-5yrs? If so, is that enough?? Or have to disconnect the gro75 and attach a bypass with tee (one side going to drain, one side to aso (for tank))? A bit to complex tbh...
@GarytheWaterGuy

Every system has it's strengths and weaknesses, yes these are a little more complex to disinfect. You can either disinfect with the old membrane in place, which wouid require replacement after disinfection. Or bypass the membrane to disinfect, which might reinfect the system when yoiu reinstall it. Or do what I do. I have a whole house UV system so there likely will be no bacteria present anyway but I have the water from the RO tested to make sure it is bacteria free, and if it is, I don't disinfect it until it's time to replace the membrane.

Hey I have had mine for years and never cleaned it so next time I change filters I probably should clean it. I don’t replace my filters as often as I should due to low funds so at times when the filters get to the point where they don’t flow I just didn’t use them for about a year. I did finally replace them. This time a difference I noticed when it regenerates to fill the tank I am not hearing any water going to the drain. I got a low flow from the tank but if I manually flush it for awhile I tend to get a good flow for awhile after manually flushing it. Is my RO restrictor valve bad and need replaced? I know you said could be my membrane. All filters are three weeks old including membrane. My system is 17 years old thinking maybe the tank air pressure or the RO restrictor valve. It is a rainsoft system. I’m not sure but I don’t think the tank has a schrader valve. There is no separate RO restrictor just built into the housing for the RO membrane. People say rainsoft systems are overpriced and not the best. I paid 7,000 for a RO system and softener
