That's so sweet of you! 🌸 I had never been interested in pastels much after buying a super cheap set at the supermarket many years ago. They were so dusty and messy, and I couldn't find a paper (among the ones I already owned) on which they stuck okay, so I decided that dry pastels weren't for me. Then some years ago I saw videos about panpastel and got hooked. This year I finally decided to give them a go, and I'm so glad I did! I absolutely love this medium. 🌸😊❤️ If you're looking for a next technique to try out, I recommend dry brushing with oil on paper. It's not as forgiving as working in graphite or charcoal, but it's not as messy either. 😊 A suggestion just in case you get bored, you know.... 😊

@@oilonpaper I tried soft pastels for a long time but they're just too chunky for me. They are expensive and I felt I was grinding them all away too fast, so when I discovered pan pastels, pastel pencils and the almighty pastel mat surface, I was hooked! I watched your oil brush portrait of Jamie. I loved it and am definitely interested in giving it a go! I'd never heard of it before. I'm all for experimenting with art!

Oh, I guess we're all different in what we find easy or not, but to me panpastels "make sense", so I immediately... liked them? I guess that's how you could describe it? Either way, I think you should give them another chance! Maybe you need to warm up to them. Or maybe the pastelmat really makes all the difference. I haven't really used them on anything else. I bought pastel pencils a week ago, and I'm having a difficult start with them. They blend too easily for me, with just a stroke of your finger you can pretty much erase all your previous work! So that's my current battle. 😊

@@oilonpaper Yeah, every medium has their own quirks. It takes a while to get used to new stuff. Like, it was my first time to draw with a dip pen/ quill. My latest upload looks so seamless. But behind the scenes, I was like "How do I use this?" haha...

@@oilonpaper oh do share them. What you usually dislike about your work are in fact awesome pieces for us. We tend to judge ourselves more harshly. And based on what I've seen from your channel, there's nothing you've created that's less than stellar.

I have tried my student-grade oil pastels on pastelmat, and the colors really popped! Even of the difficult, normally patchy-looking colors. It really takes the pigment well. BUT you can't layer on it any better than other paper because the tooth is so fine that the oil pastel immediately clogs them. 😅 So I wouldn't necessarily use it with oil pastel unless you never layer anyway... (If you have good oil pastels that don't look patchy, there's no need for pastelmat imo.) If you can get your hands on a sheet to try out, you should try pastelmat for soft pastels though. One great thing is that it holds onto the soft pastel pigments so well that you don't need to fixate the piece at the end. So maybe you'd like your panpastels with this paper much more.

@@oilonpaper I'm going to try to resurrect my pan pastels. They're not cheap so I feel a bit sad that I can't utilize it as often as I should. But thanks for the paper tip. I'll see if I can buy that here in Canada.
