Thank you! I've been researching how to wire 115v L1 and L2. Which wire goes where, your the only one who explained it plain and simple. Much appreciated!

thanks for the look inside the motor cover. My two leads had worked off of the tabs somehow, and I had no idea where to place them. This solved the problem!

While my pump was running I accidentally switched a switch, thinking it was an on/off switch, from 115v to 230v now it is barely running even after unplugging it and starting over. Is there a fix?

I removed my old pump and thought the wiring would be the same on my new one. They were both same make same hp same model etc but looks like the manufacturer revamped the newer pump better than the older one and in doing so the wire hookups were completely different. Either way I had a green and two black wires to deal with. After watching your video it occurred to me that I had a 230v single phase 3 wire setup and could simply put one black on L1 and the other black on L2. Put the green on ground and good to go. Thanks for the help!

very good tutorial, but like u say if u switch the 115v to 230v on the black plug inside motor, we have to change the breaker for 2 polo breaker.

So I have a pump NBHT Model HBP110 II I bought about a year ago. I did not realize pumps can be 115/230v as this one is. It had a normal 115v plug which is what my power to pump is.. 115v. The pump stopped and was very hot after about a month of working fine. After it cools down it will run maybe a few hours. Well after trying to track down what the issue was I see there is a little cover on the end of the pump with a 2 way selector switch. My new pump was set to 230v. I thought ok here's the problem. When I switched back to 115v it will only run about 2 minutes until the GFI kicks out. I reset it comes right back on. Did I damage the pump running the pump switched to 230v supplying 115v? Everyone says they could see the opposite happening if i was running 230v to a 115v setting but that's not the case?

....WHAT IS THE PART NAME OF THE V-SHAPED SWITCH THAT PROVIDES POWER TO THE CAPACITOR? YOU REFER TO IT AS A "STARTER"...Is that the correct term to use if I need to order the part?

I have a question for you. Where are you going to order that v-shaped part from? I melted the terminal and am trying to find where to order it from. You know, the part with the 115/240 switch.

I am pretty sure what is shown is incorrect. First, unless the wiring from your timer panel is screwy, the color for the live 230V wires will be red and black. For 230V both black and red are “hot” and they have symmetrical voltages with respect to ground, so it may be true that for 230V it does not matter which wire goes to which pole on the pump (I say *may* I am not positive that it does not matter). For 115V, though, one of the wires is neutral and the other is “hot” (and then there is the ground wire). For 115V the wires out of the timer box will be black and white. Neutral usually (from what I’ve seen) ends up having a voltage near ground, but I am pretty sure this is only because it comes out of the center tap of the step down transformer that brings 230V to 115V - that is, it is not a “true” ground. Long story short, the “hot” wires (ie the two that are not ground) of a 115V installation do not have symmetrical voltages and so I would be surprised if it in fact does not matter which color goes to which pole on the pump.

on 230 volt system 2 hot legs it does not matter because both legs are the same supplying 110 volts each from both buses ( 2 hot legs / power wires acts as each others returns due to AC going back and forth) ; remember your dealing with AC current ( unlike DC the current goes back and forth and polarity is not a factor) For 110v the motor probably converts it to dc so the wiring for hot wire / neutral (works the same way as ground - return. If this was a DC system wiring it wrong would make the motor turn in the wrong direction.

each line...L1 and L2 both send 115 vac to each terminal therefore it gets 220-230 vac. Most of the time each phase...red or black is 115vac. Both hot and the ground carries the neutral load or unused voltage. if you have a 115 volts unit most of the time unless they wired it wrong will be black..(hot) and white (neutral) one wire, the black hot carries 115 volts ac.. the white is your neutral. which carries unused voltage back to the panel which in turn returns it back to the transformer... there ya go.. if you have whit enad black its probably 115. Set switch to 115 if you have green red and black,,, black to L1 and red to L2 switch to 220. If you have it one 220 switch and the motor goes slow when you fire it up it wont hurt it. It will only run at half speed because its only getting half voltage. If you have it switched to 115 and hit it with 220 your screwed and will smoke. So always , if you dont know , switch to 220 and wire that in. See if it runs slow. as a last resort....your welcome!

I have exact motor which i got it from my friend. The motor was set it to 115v and used 12awg wire to l1 and l2 without ground. Whereas my old motor was using 14awg wire. I replace with new motor ust1102 with 115v set and 14awg wire, but when I fire up motor my breaker is getting tripped. I have double black switch in my breaker box. I am going to check my voltage coming in from breaker, if its 240 then should I switch motor setting to 230v from 115v? Should I also use 12awg instead of 14awg? Please advice.

Hi Jagdish the wiring on the pump should match your breaker, so yes you would need to switch it to 230V and 12awg wire is preferred.

Wait wait wait, Phase order doesn't matter for forward or reverse? is there an internal phase invertor in the motor to keep the motor from water cavitation from running the pump in the wrong direction?
@Eztestpools
@Eztestpools 5 жыл бұрын
The single phase motor shown does not spin in reverse. Three phase motors can in fact be wired to spin both ways. Thanks!

Hi E-Z Test Pool New subcriber here. And I need your help. I bought a pump 1/3hp Gould pump no. J03 from a scrapyard. Our power supply is 220v. Pump does not have a switch from 115v to 220v. I do not know the pump's voltage but the Capacitor says 110/115v 124-140mfd. Is it 115v? But I tried to connect it to our wall socket abruptly and it runs. I'm afraid if I try to run it a long time the windings will be burnt. Thanks. Boppie Distura
