I think worded it wrong. All you have to do is give it a name and create a target package. So by create I meant just save. Apologies for the confusion.

Hi, make sure you click the arrow key to expand to find the polyline imported and right click on the polyline and select save feature as

This will vary on which country and which coordinates you use. It is a good practice to always draw in the right coordinates.

You can manually add text in QGIS if you want. Have not tried to import text from autocad yet...

Does the autocad file has any title blocks? Hidden layers? What are the units of your drawing?

Hi John, at 1:52 of the video when the window appears to set your settings for the import, make sure the CRS coordinate are the ones you want. @@ashim84 Is there a specific reason you are using a different coordinate system in Civil 3D? I think that this might be the case. Can you try changing the Civil 3D file coordinates to WGS 84 prior to exporting?

@@CivilTechSource thanks for your reply. I was digitising buildings using Bing maps inside civil 3d, using insert map location. I checked some tutorials where it was mentioned to use Mercator (epsg 3395) projection. I am able to digitise in meters. The problem occurs when I try to export them bu assigning WGS 84 (epsg 4326). The conversion is successful, but when i import the .shp or .kml the files don't come on the correct location.

@@ashim84 Okay the way I see it is that there are two possible ways that things have gone wrong: A) When you setup your bing map in Civil3D you need to make sure that when you drop the marker on the map, the easting and northings when you select your reference point need to match exactly the Latitude and Longitude that you have inserted in the Bing Map window. OR B) When you import in QGIS you need to make sure the same Grid reference system you used in Civil 3D is used in QGIS. Personally, I think it is the first one. Check my video on Geolocation map to see the steps I use for setting up my bing map. Note: If you dwg drawing is drawn to the right coordinates and you know the grid reference system, then there is no need to setup the bing map.

Hi Louis, to start with your CAD file needs to be drawn in the coordinates that you want (this is the X,Y in the cad file). Once you know that your drawing is positioned in the correct coordinates and you know the coordinates you are using, then in QGIS when importing you select the coordinates system you used to draw your plan in CAD. Hope it helps.

Maybe you want to import it to qgis or other gis software to overlay some other data/layers

It depends from which country you work. If you have a topographical survey they usually have a coordinate system and you can use that. Sometimes architectures drawings are drawn in mm, and not always too coordinates. Hope it helps. If anyone knows anything more please comment.

@@CivilTechSource hi there, thank you for your prompt response, I'm from Romania, and I have tried to convert the dwg file into a kml and if i load it in google earth, everything is positioned corectly, but the same dwg if i load it into qgis... the location is somewhere near Africa.

Salut, have you tried loading your kml file into qgis to see if that's loading correctly? You can send the dwg to me and I can have a look for you if you want.

@@CivilTechSource the dwg file contains a lot of info, and it would be easier for me to select only what i'm interested of and then importing it in qgis. But i cant located properly, i can send u the dwg if u would like to take a look at it.

Send me the coordinates of your project in the dwg file and the coordinate in Google will double check what coordinates you using by searching in Google about it.

You do not create it, if you look closely to the window that appears it says save. So give it a name an hit save

Possibly you are right clicking on the wrong item. Make you you right click on the line layer and not the group filters so make sure you are at the bottom of your tree structure. Hope this helps

When importing a drawing two things can cause the drawing not come in the right place. A) The Drawing coordinates (X,Y) are not correct. This means that the whole drawing has been drawn on the wrong place. OR B) When you import your drawing you are selecting the wrong GIS system. OR C) Units are in mm? or could be A & B

Hi, you don't get you just create one. In this tutorial I had already created one and just saved over it. So if you look closely at the window that pops up it asks to save not open, therefore you create one.

Nodir, I agree! This is the only way I have found if you have AutoCAD LT, as it has less features than AutoCAD. If you know a simpler way, please do share it with us.
