How to convert your cylinder heads for unleaded fuel.
In this video I show you how to install hardened exhaust seats in your cylinder heads.
As a general rule of thumb I use .004 press fit on cast iron and .007 on aluminum heads.

Thanks 4 the reply. Actually, there was more information in your 20m video than most >hour long ones. And it was presented without fluff or hype and was backed with 'solid reasoning' -> what a ShOcK. I'll take quality over quantity any day. I just wish the girls felt the that way Anyway, it was a pleasure to sit-in on the process. It was like being envited over to a shop and told "you can watch" but keep quiet! (ironcially that's how my last 3rd date went ). This is what the Interwebs were for; GR8T content

That was fascinating. The floating table feature on that machine is amazing, what a time saver. I'm still hoping you will do a video on valve guide replacement, especially on aluminum heads. Thanks for the great content.

😀 Back in the day, Kawasaki had a problem with seats coming undone, my old school solution was a center punch and a BFH, worked every time. And no come backs.😉

Honestly haven't a clue about any of this but it's extremely fascinating and now I want to learn!!! Any resources for a naturally inquisitive mind that considers learning a hobby? For perspective on my level of knowledge : I understand cars, love cars, and when my cars break, I learn how to fix them. I also understand engines and how they operate. Just not the machining side of things. PS: Absolutely love how you are using the part for the actual fit and finish. Not messing with extremely precise measurements, but actually letting the part tell you what you need. Beautiful. (Probably why some manufacturers get it wrong.) Too many young engineers, not enough old hats. The old school way is awesome! There's a reason it's old school and you guys are worth more then your weight in gold. You got to your age through practical application of your skill at this game called life. I'd take one guy from the older generations who's probably forgotten more then I've ever learned on this planet so far, then 10 engineers who rely on fitting their knowledge into X years of schooling.

ok so as another Texas engine builder I watch all your videos...you are the man! Glad to know someone else is using the same old school technique as we do. we're using a winona ph2000 and set the heads on there EXACTLY like you do and cut seats the same way. Thanks for the quill lock tip to get rid of movement brother! Im gonna use that fo sho. BTW know your a big Smokey fan...use to spent a week down there a couple of summers with my dad testing when I was a kid. Smokey was a prick...but funny and always good to me as a kid and later...before he died I bought some of his valve/seat grinding stuff. I've got stones I'll never use...Glad to know someone like you got his HVG engine! I have family in Borne...mind if I stop by and visit?

Glad you liked the tip and am also that someone understands. Yes new machines are nice but if you can't or don't know how to use the old machines then you're just a setup guy. Any friend of Smokey is a friend of mine, stop by when your in town. May cost you a grinding stone..LOL.

Are those C4AE-G castings? The chambers sure look like it. I'm working on a set of those heads right meow. Do you happen to have a video of restricting the oil to the top on these heads? Or cutting the spring pads down for spring cups? Either way, this is a great video! I love the FE's!

Danny could you put the seats in the freezer prior to pressing them in and allow .0005-.0006 interference ?
@MrDanielSoliz
@MrDanielSoliz 2 жыл бұрын
Yes you could and when installing seats in aluminum heads you need to because that much press fit would just tear up the bore installing the seat. You also need to heat up the head.

I had a 77 Dodge Aspen in the mid 90’s. The valve seats got beat out so bad, the damage was well in to the heads. Had to get new heads, and have hardened seats installed. I have a ‘75 Ford FE 360. I was told the seats were already hardened & didn’t need upgraded. Is this true ? It only has 30K original miles, because it was my grandfather’s farm truck.

Unless someone installed seats in the heads there as cast and should need seats. You will know how hard they when you go to cut them.

Unrelated question for you….. Ring gap. I am about to put together a naturally aspirated LS engine for an Ultra 4 4400 class car. Can you give a little extra ring gap to let the engine run at a higher temperature? For example running high Rpm’s for extended time battling for a podium finish, and the temp starts to climb 250-270ish. I was thinking that the little bit of extra ring gap would let them expand more without pinching and scaring the cylinder wall. What’s your opinion?
@MrDanielSoliz
@MrDanielSoliz 2 жыл бұрын
Yes you could , great idea! Those are the things I look at when tearing down an engine and think about then assembling an engine.👍👍👍👍

How much extra ring gap do you think is sufficient? Maybe just gap it for boost?
