The civilian version of the hexamine cooker was marketed as the 'Pyro carry cook' by Carr, Day and Martin in the 1980,s and easily available in camping shops.

That's interesting. I've never heard that. My grandad got me my fist when I was a kid in the 80s. I always presumes it was just army aerplus. I wonder if he saw them in an outdoors shop and got that version. Or at least that motivated him to buy me ex army one

You should put tin foil rapped round the bottom of your mess tins when cooking stops the tins getting burnt at the bottom

That's not a bad idea. Another option is to rub washing up liquid on before you cook. The soot washes straight off

You can’t be using the hot water from any heated printed meal packs like wayfarers for brews, the inks are really not good for you. It’s quite clear on the instructions you shouldn’t be doing it. The plain ones from rat packs are fine.

Correct. When? Emma's first came out in the mid eighties, I was in the united states marine corps. There wouldn't know such thing as flameless. Heaters at the time and we were still using hexamaine and trioxamaine fuel tabs to heat water with. We thought cool. We can heat are food in these new packets. And boil our coffee water at the same time. Over a.of time we were getting sick and it was determined that the packaging for the MRE's Was leaching off a chemical coating. So what we did was either boil. Or coffee water first and then boil the MRE. Or heat the MRE first Dump the water out, Wipe out are canting cup input. Fresh water. The boil for coffee.

Don't get mad on me ...but there are a few things wrong in here,,,,it does not matter if it is a British army mess tin or other cook set .First of all is that retort pouch does not guarantee the plastic chemical leakage on exteriour of the MRE pouch , its only the inside that is already protected from 4 to 5 layers of laminated aluminium and plastics types-> so don't reuse same water used to heat to prepare other stuff, except if you are in a real war situation where water is very hard to find...Second ,the mess tin lid on top and solid fuel tablets is not a great ideea since its flat and can redirect the smoke from burning tablets to the inside even with a very small empty space between the mess tins.Third thing is to make sure its not aluminium mess tins, because if you use them just to heat water you will probably drink aluminium hidroxide...it occurs naturaly ,its not bad but its not good,...better use stainless steel.Cheers!!!

Your absolutely right. Those tins just happen to be British army issued. And yeah they are the pouches that say don't drink the water. (I was going to us an army MRE which are safe to drink from. But when I got on location and opened my food bag that's all that was left and I just followed my script. I did put something in the description after someone else pointed it out. Thanks for the comment brother. I appreciate the feedback.

I use a multi fuel folding stove..wood/ fuel tab and i cook with boy scout style mess kit i picked up new /pretty cheap..

Hmmmm use heximine block....you're kidding....most of us invested in little gas cookers....our SQMS and the troop Sgts use to hold privately purchased spare canisters in theirs stores. They not only didn't produce lots of smoke, black soot and a bright yellow flame that could be seen for miles, the gas cooker could be used in more enclosed spaces, were easier to conceal and mask, and didn't leave black soot all over you kit. We really only used heximine cookers in a emergency as a back up and really, under tactical conditions, often not at all.
