This was the first thing I learned in metalworking classes.

Like others, I can breath once again knowing you are still with us 🙂. Those of us that follow Joe, are exposed to his wealth of knowledge that no Tech School could ever offer! My lathe has neither, but Dec 5th I go over to a machine shop close out sale. I noticed two of the Hardinge tool room lathes did have Travel Dials. Hopefully the owners rep will consider letting the dials go, since I don't need another lathe until I get a clean bill of health 🙂. Bear

Years ago I was taught to always turn the lead screw in the same direction to reduce backlash. up until now I never thought of it as pushing the tool into the work. Probably produces the same result, just a different way of thinking. Good to see you posting again. You have been missed. BTW, the shaper is running pretty good. I'm learning a lot about how to grind tools for the shaper. Shaper tools are a bit different than lathe tools. Lathe tools work but don't produce the same results. Be well! KOKO!

I was beginning to wonder if you were ok as you haven't posted anything lately, good to see you still breathing. 👍 You can also take out backlash by pulling on the toolpost, especially useful for very fine cuts as you put your own tool deflection in, i hear some lathes even have air rams to preload the leadscrew, but i dont know which.
