Deanna, I enjoyed your step by step video. Some of these comments below are just, classless and very negative. It's very easy to criticize , but these viewers need to be reminded that it's not easy to talk to a camera, you're not a Hollywood director. Your videos are free!, easy to follow, informative and your manner is straightforward and not wishy-washy. Unfortunately some horse people are very opinionated and think their way is the only way. Your replies to them speak to your professionalism. Keep 'em coming! I appreciate them.

Aww, thank you for taking the time to leave that sweet comment. Honestly, this is one of the first videos I ever made, about 2 and a half years ago!! 🙈 I was horribly camera shy and some of my older videos are hard for me to watch because I am extremely uncomfortable but I keep them around to see how far I have come. I’m quite proud! It’s hard to put yourself out there online for people to criticize but I’m just going to keep going because it makes me happy! ☺️

Deanna Corby I’m new to dressage after riding hunter for 20 plus years, so I find your videos very helpful. Even though I have an excellent coach, it’s always reinforcing to listen to your videos when I’m at home. Good for you that you can see yourself improving. I didn’t really notice anything wrong. As a former elementary teacher, I used to be very shy too, but experience and confidence in my style is what got me to 33 years. Now I enjoy being a student for a change and spending time with horses during my retirement.

Aw, I’m so glad. Thank you for sharing that. This is one of the first videos that I ever created many years ago. I think I’ve gotten a bit better since then. I have tons of other videos on my channel that you might find helpful and that will hopefully be a little less painful to watch. 😂😅 Thanks for being so sweet!

Another great video! Especially loved that you explained how to attach the lunge line to the bridle. Yours is the first video to show how its done and I have been to the end of the internet on videos on lungeing! Now if you could show how to correctly put a chambon on I will be set ;)

@DeannaThompsonCorby
@DeannaThompsonCorby 6 жыл бұрын
You’re right, lounging a horse in just a halter is a good idea especially if the horse has been locked in a stall or is super nutty. However, lounging a horse with just a halter often means that the horse is just getting cardio exercise and not engaging their abdominals, backs and hind legs. You can certainly train them to do so but that takes specialized ground work training. Using side reins (I use side reins in this video, NOT a tie down) while lounging a horse in combination with the appropriate amount of driving aids can encourage the horse to travel is much better balance while getting some cardio exercise while also building strength. Thanks for watching and for your comment. 😁

@@reecehaywood8486 Then why can so many people lunge their horse in halters only? Why can so many people ride in just a halter or in bitless bridles and why can horses still run away if they have a bit in their mouth?
@maddieoo9287

so, the bridle has MANY benefits. In lots of cases, I lunge fully racked up and then get right on. But when lunging with the bridle and a tie down, is very helpful. the tie down is NOT a punishment method! when used properly, the tie down is loose when the horse holds herself in the correct position. it’s tight when she lifts her head far up to be a punk! not damage is done. it builds muscle in their top line and neck when they’re moving. it’s super helpful! When lunging with the bridle, it allows the horse to understand the control situation. When a horse is lunged in a halter, they tend to pull their head away, and pull the lunge line right out of your hand. when lunging with the bridle, they tend to be a million times more responsive. they tend to pay more attention to your contact and what your asking of them. when lunging with these tools correctly, it’s very beneficial!

Lunging horse should be done off a cavesson and the person doing the lunging should pivot around one leg and therefore the horse moves in a circle ,the lunge whip should always be used but the voice is the total control, slow and calm when asking to walk from trot and higher with energy when asking to trot from walk and slightly long when asking to canter from trot . When asking to halt ,have a assistant on the outside of the horse and when halt is spoken the assistant stops the horse by using the cavesson ,when the halt happens the horse is rewarded ,next time the horse halts without the assistant help so from then on hopefully the horse will walk ,trot and canter when asked and will be a nice horse to lunge and teach pupils how to ride !

hi Deanna, what is a good age to start lunging a horse ?we have a 2 yr old filly recently rescued, ( not due to miss handling etc just unwanted) my other half had a cob previously that recently passed away, his age was 36 which was fantastic so she knows her stuff but im trying to learn, specially dealing with a horse from such a young age, any advice for this process would be great.

rs plumber - Congratulations on your new family member! That’s very exciting! Personally, I start most horses under saddle at age 3.5 or 4 but there are a few things that you can certainly do with a two year old. I’ve compiled a list of videos that you might be interested in. Ground manners: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fZOdgMmD3K-no5c.html In hand exercises: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fsd_oMiAu6jLqZs.html Teaching a young horse to stand still at the water hose: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Y92oq5OY3ZirYWg.html How to use side reins: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rptmkshi1OCUh6s.html How to teach your horse to stop at liberty: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/msxddpaC3-CrY4U.html How to use your voice to lunge your horse at liberty: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nqhgja2Wx9arYo0.html It’s important that you not push your two year old too hard or fast. Their bones and joints are still growing and they are usually pretty immature. Lungeing in small circles and for more than just a few minutes at a time would not be a good idea for a two year old. Keep your sessions short, fun and easy on their little baby bodies. Circles should be large and the work should be interesting. At 3 years old (assuming she is physically and mentally developed enough to have a “job”), I would teach your horse to lunge with LONG side reins. This is to assume that you have already trained your young horse to do the other things mentioned above. Again, sessions should be short, fun and easy on the body. I hope this information helps. Thanks for watching and for your comment and good luck with your horse. 💝

Good point! Handling the bit with the utmost care at all times is very important. A cavesson is always ideal and preferred but the USDF instructors certification program shows us that lungeing with a bridle is also acceptable, if no cavesson is available.

Wow, you’re right! This video just went over what to use to lunge your horse. I’m so sorry about that! I’ll be sure to make another. I can tell you however that while you are lungeing you are driving your horse around with your body language, voice and your whip. If you would like to lunge your horse counter clockwise for instance, hold your line in your left hand and your whip in your right hand. Make an equilateral triangle with the horses head, your body and the horses hind end. Use your driving aids to tell the horse to stay away from you on the circle and how fast to go. If you’re new at this, it’s easiest to practice in a round pen. So sorry this video wasn’t what you were expected. Thank you for your feedback.

Use a halter. Putting the line through the bit just makes them fall in. I use a halter , and I can change the rein by backing Up and asking them to turn. NHM way. So much easier
@DeannaThompsonCorby

I like lunging with a halter too but it’s not the only way, especially if you want to lunge with side reins, like what this video is about. Lunging a horse off the bit doesn’t make them lean/turn in anymore than what they could do with a halter.

Frank the USDF suggests that a horse be lunged with a bit, bridLE and side reins. This will teach the horse how to life it’s back and engage it’s hind legs rather than just giving the horse cardio exercise on the lunge circle with a halter.
@taylorpaige2392
@taylorpaige2392 5 жыл бұрын
I disagree with lunging a horse by the bit I personally don't even lead by the bit and the lunge whip is not necessary for all horses. You said that you can't skip wearing gloves however it does not actually affect the lunging process it is simply a personal preference. This video doesn't actually give instruction on how to lunge so the video is kinda pointless and a waste of time.
@DeannaThompsonCorby
@DeannaThompsonCorby 5 жыл бұрын
Hey Taylor, thanks for watching my video and for your comment! I think it’s so wonderful that you are so careful and protective of the horses mouth. We need more of that. Personally, I don’t like to lunge the horse or even lead the horse by the bit either unless I have no other choice. I am totally with you on that one. I’m going to have to totally disagree with you on the long lunge whip not being needed though. You don’t necessarily need the whip to encourage the horse to go but you need it to keep the horse out on the big circle and to engage their hind legs. I also strongly disagree with you on not needed gloves. Sure, you CAN lunge a horse without gloves and not get rope burn if the horse doesn’t do anything unexpected but if you think every single time you lunge every single horse in the world, that no horse ever spooks, bolts, suddenly makes your lunge circle too big, etc., then you haven’t lunged enough horses in your life. Gloves are just a safety precaution that is foolish to skip. I feel the same way about riding with helmets. Sure, you CAN ride a horse without a helmet and not get hurt but why would you risk it? When I made this video, I was assuming the viewer already knew the basics of how to use their body language and intonation. I think you are looking for a more elementary video rather than this one about how to use the equipment properly. Sorry I couldn’t help you!
@taylorpaige2392
@taylorpaige2392 5 жыл бұрын
Deanna Corbyn I never said anything about not wearing a helmet as I always wear a helmet and I know the gloves are safety proconcaution but I feel are not as necessary as a helmet. I know all horses can spook as I own a arabian who use to be very spooky and still sometimes spookes to this day. I have never however gotten rope burn, and I know that doesn't mean it will never happen however I prefer to not wear gloves as I have had the line grab my glove before and it could have resulted in me being dragged. Next topic the lounge whip I very strongly disagree that all horses need it to stay out on the cercle, SOME horses may need it but NOT ALL horses do. I rarely have to use one with my mare however I have worked with horses in the past that needed the extra little push.
