Hi, I'm blind, and use Ambutech cane day to day. (ETA: read my comments further below in this thread for important things on cosplaying this character without being offensive or harmful.) 🧵 2 red sections = deaf-blind, 0 or 1 red section = hearing-blind. The tip you showed is called a pencil tip, which is nonstandard, mainly because it's a pain in the ass; very light and great sound, but it gets caught on every pavement crack. IIRC, Ambutech's standard is either a mushroom or ceramic tip. (Personally I mainly use a mushroom rolling tip.) There are basically two cane grips. Golf grip: cane grip in dominant palm, flat side of grip against palm & index finger extended (also on the flat). Used for normal length sweep (arm fully down, cane probably at 30° angle vs ground), covers more area. Pencil grip is, well, like a pencil, usually at the base of the grip. Used for crowds and if you anticipate higher-up obstacles (tables, trucks, face-level signs, etc) that the normal hold would miss because it's too low. You didn't do this, but warning: never put your hand through the loop. It's dangerous. The loop is only for storage purposes, or maybe hooking a finger on to if just standing around holding it vertical. If extending the cane as much as you do @ 11:03. I would be doing so in golf grip (aside from a brief transition). You're doing a weird pencil-ish grip there. Note how the cane is bending your fingers out to the side; you don't have full control of the cane. You're just sorta swinging it in front of you like a marching band baton, not using the tip. It looks Wrong. Also, important note: it is ILLEGAL in most of the world (including most US states) to walk around in public with an outstretched white cane (i.e. in a way that would be perceived by bystanders as 'this is an actual blind person') unless you actually are blind (or being trained or something). The reason for that is that, for our protection, displaying a white cane generally means we are to be given *absolute* right of way. Obviously we do try to use sidewalks etc properly, but one can make a mistake, there might just be no good place to cross, etc. I've only rarely had to make people stop like that. If there are a bunch of people around faking at using a white cane, you undermine that respect, and fuck things up for those of us who actually do need the various protections, deference, line-cutting, etc that go with using a white cane in public. I don't want to get questioned about whether I'm legit or not every time I go out because someone thinks "maybe they're just pretending". Drivers & general public have to unquestioningly and immediately defer to the white cane, or it puts us in serious danger. So please, if you're going to do this, a) NEVER extend the cane anywhere near traffic or general public places - hold it vertically, or preferably just stow it away, and b) only do this in private places where context will make sure it's very clear that you're just cosplaying, rather than faking being an actual blind person. E.g. ComicCon or at home, feel free to play pretend - but in a grocery store or bus, it's not OK. Also, please don't close your eyes and use the cane for a few minutes and think that that experience is anything like the real thing. It isn't. There's a ton you don't even know you don't know. (FWIW, I have done training workshops for sighted people to learn what it's like to navigate blind IRL, so I do know what I'm talking about here.)
