About this video: This video is a tutorial that discusses how to crate train a puppy. Keep in mind that every puppy progresses at their own rate. If your puppy exhibits signs of stress or anxiety go back to a more basic exercise. The key to effective training is to build on success. You will know that you are pushing criteria too fast if they exhibit stress whining, frustrated barking, loss of appetite, appear dis-engaged, start biting or pawing inside the closed door crate, begin stress panting, drooling or involuntarily urinate or defecate. Once properly conditioned, the crate should offer a place of security, rest and relaxation.

Hi Alyssa, I'm loving your videos! Thank you and please keep making more. I have a few questions, if you don't mind. So should we be doing this crate training the moment we get home with the puppy? How about when we pick up the puppy from the breeder? Won't we have to put him in a cage to drive him home? ( he's 2 hours away). I'm not sure how much time we'll have at the breeders to teach him to go in the cage without us putting him in. Which makes me worried that he would start off on the wrong hand, right off from the start. Not only will he be getting separated from his mother, we'll also be forcing him into a cage to bring him home.
@legendsdogtraining
@legendsdogtraining 9 жыл бұрын
+Matsume Kai, thanks for watching and commenting! really appreciate it. :-) not sure if you have already picked up the puppy. If not ... bring the crate with you when you pick him up, and feel out the situation. in that circumstance the puppy might actually curl up in the crate without issue. or you might find that it is better to have someone hold him in their lap (not sure if there will be another adult with you). You can use the puppy's interest in food as a measure of comfort. If the puppy has an appetite, that's usually a good sign that they're adapting well to the changes, and you can start using the puppy's dinner for some simple training exercises (ie. scattering a small handful of food in the crate and letting the puppy explore and eat and create positive associations with the crate. Kids are naturally excited to have a new puppy in the house. I would have some other activity prepared for your son (ie. crayons and paper so that he can draw pictures of your new puppy). I like to get puppies started with some training basics before incorporating kids into the training exercises. Just so you know I offer skype consultations, if you want to set anything up just go to my website and fill out an assessment form: www.legendsdogtraining.com Thanks again for watching!

My problem is she has her crate in the playpen and sleeps in it with the door open. How do I gradually go from that to door closed ? If I close the door she paws and growls. So I don't know. Treats don't work for long because she is small and fills up really fast. So when she goes in and lays down (door open) how do I reinforce ? If I say Yes or good girl she runs out and jumps on the side of the pen !!!

laura lynch hi Laura! Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment! What kind of puppy do you have? Jumping and biting are normal puppy behaviors. Puppies have a lot of energy and they’re still learning to navigate their way through social interactions. That being said we can promote calmer interactions by setting aside 5-10 minutes, once or twice a day, to reinforce them for settling. I usually use their meals combined with some higher value meaty food that is easy to cut into small pieces (like happy howie’s rolls). Doing this routinely can help teach puppies to default to calm behaviors in our presence. I do this in combination with structured games of tug or fetch. Check out my puppy playlist to get more of a visual of what this looks like. You can also check out my new online course. It’s primarily for adult dogs that are exhibiting behavioral concerns but the same exercises/ concepts can be applied with puppies to make sure they get off to the best possible start. He would go in the crate only when the chicken is there and then tries to come straight out. im scared if i keep treating him at night to go back in after potty he would soil himself later on. i only crate him when its time for bed. should i crate train him throughout the day and leave him there for different intervals? im in need of desperate help.

Maribel thanks for watching and commenting. I would have an area that is centrally located in your home to keep your puppy in any time you are unable to give him your full and undivided attention. I usually puppy proof the kitchen and gate it off, if possible. Most puppies are around the 1 year mark before they can be free in the house without supervision. If you’re interested you can check out my online course at basetrainingmethod.com Variations of the exercises recommended can be used with puppies in order to get them off to a strong start. I got a puppy a week ago and did not start with it a crate. He was fine the first 4 days then started tearing things up. Got a crate and have put him in at night. I tried to encourage him by putting him in and giving him treats with the door open, then shut it for 10 minutes, as suggested in another video. He is doing alright at night the last few nights, but is not going in much on his own. I was told to feed him, and that works as far as him going in, but just to eat. Can I correct this with your training. But still have go in at night? Sorry so long. Thank you

Jackie Williams Hi Jackie! I personally prefer to get the puppy to the point that they are happily going in and out and settling in the crate before i close the door. For me, with a young puppy, this is usually just a day or two. I find other management solutions to bridge the gap. I use tethers or use baby gates or exercise pens to confine the puppy to areas that are adequately puppy proofed. Once a puppy starts to love the crate I will have them sleep in the crate, next to my bed at night (being in close proximity will help them feel more secure) I might also provide a high value chewie like a bully stick or stuffed kong in the first few nights. Good luck! - Alyssa Rose

Hi! Thanks for watching my video and taking the time to write in. I would keep in mind that your puppy is not necessarily being stubborn she is most likely nervous about the crate. Here are a few tips: 1. Establish motivation. Keep her on a healthy feeding schedule. Feed her 2-3 times per day (depending on age of puppy), and offer food for limited amount of time (5-10 minutes). Leaving food out will devalue food and make it harder to motivate her to learn and overcome nervous response. 2. Use high value meaty and nutritious food for training (for instance, boiled chicken). 3. Keep training sessions short. Each session should only be about 5 minutes. 4. Reinforce for close approximations. For instance, if she takes a step towards the crate. You can even scatter food outside the doorway to crate for one or two sessions. If you push her she's likely to just shut down. So again, move at her pace! Thanks again for watching. - Alyssa Rose, CPDT-KA

Hi Ashley! Thanks for watching and commenting. If I suspect that the puppy is not ready to be in a closed door crate I will put a dog bed next to my bed and attach the puppy on harness and leash to a sturdy hook in the wall or heavy piece of furniture (anything that the puppy won't be able to move or knock over). When you do use the crate, I would also place it right next to your bed. If you do the exercises in the video and the puppy has no previous negative experiences with a crate, it usually takes less than a week to help them see the crate as a cozy, safe place to sleep at night. - Alyssa Rose cpdt

@legendsdogtraining
@legendsdogtraining 6 жыл бұрын
Jessica Rosen thanks for watching! I would be careful about putting two puppies in the same crate since fights can occur. You can have two separate crates situated next to each other. That being said, I personally don’t use crates unless it seems that the puppy (or adult dog) perceives the crate to be a safe place. Meaning, they’re happy to go inside, they appear relaxed when the crate door is closed, and they’re not in a major rush to bust out when the door is opened. As an alternative I create a puppy proof space in a central area of the house, like the kitchen. I work on the exercises shown in the video. After a week or so of practicing these exercises I might move on to having the puppy sleep in the crate overnight. If the puppy is ever alone for more than 2 or 3 hours during the da my i have them stay in the gated puppy space where they have more space. Let me know if you need more help, we can set up a phone consultation. Go to my website legendsdogtraining.com and fill out an assessment form. best, Alyssa Rose, CPDT

With training like this isn't the puppy/dog learning to always expect food? How'd you break away from the reinforcement? Where's the puppy going to be sleeping while it's learning that it's crate is it's safe space? Or is it getting reinforcement before owners goes to sleep aswell?

@legendsdogtraining
@legendsdogtraining 7 жыл бұрын
+Peter Furze hi! Thanks for watching my training video. When you are using food in a systematic manner to reinforce desired behavior (start with simple criteria and build on it) you end up conditioning your puppy/dog to offer those same behaviors even in the absence of clear cut reinforcement. Every puppy/dog is different but generally I will do exercises like this for 3-5 days. If the puppy/dog has no prior negative experiences you'll start to see that they will begin curling up in the crate even when they havent been asked. And if you've done your training right closing the gate won't cause any anxiety or frustration because you've conditioned your pup to feel safe and good within the confines of the crate. With young pups or new dogs I will continue to feed meals in crate or provide intermittent value reinforcement inside the crate (leftover steak or chicken) but the reinforcement schedule becomes less predictable.

Yuki Ou if puppies still needs to go potty in the middle of the night I like to set a timer to take them out. It’s not wrong to respond to the puppy’s cries if you feel he/she has to go potty but as a general rule I think it’s a good idea to be preemptive and offer potty trips as often as you believe is necessary. Hi Luke! Thanks for watching and commenting. I agree, if crates are used and introduced appropriately they can be great tools. I do think they can be easily mis-used though. For example, forcing puppies or adult dogs into crates against their will, despite anxious/frustrated barking, clawing at the crate, or biting at the wires. I also strongly discourage people from using crates for longer than 3 hours during the day. Having a puppy sleep in a crate in the bedroom through the night is usually not an issue since *most puppies sleep that time away anyway. For longer daytime confinement I think it's smart to create a larger safe space, centrally located within the house, like a gated kitchen. I'm afraid if I put her in the crate the first night and she's not comfortable with crate yet it will delay or make the crate training that much harder. I can't seem to find any advice on this part of bringing home a new puppy. Thank you for your videos and any help you could give concerning this issue. 🐶

Hey! Thanks for watching. I usually take some old blankets and towels (anything you don't mind being chewed up) and make a bed next to my bed. I keep the puppy "back tied" to a solid structure (anything that cannot be moved or tipped over). You can use an old or cheap leash (because your puppy might chew on it) or a thin chain leash. If the puppy doesn't have any negative associations with the crate, and you take the crate training at your puppy's pace, it usually takes 3-7 days to get a puppy comfortable with sleeping in the crate next to your bed at night. Alyssa: I have just watched about 20 crate training videos by different trainers. They all (your video included) show the good parts of crate training, but not the difficult parts. I am getting an 8-9 wk old puppy and I have a ton of questions based on a video which shows the honest reality of crate training: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ibuKgLyBx962n2Q.html Puppies will cry and bark, maddeningly long and loud!!! For how long? Do you leave them in the crate the first night at home? How often do you let them out? How many days will this go on before the dog acclimatizes and stops yowling? I want to try crate training but I really want to know what I am getting myself into before it starts. Any feedback you can provide will be much appreciated.

Billder Inbaja Hi! Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. I do not have puppies stay in a closed crate at night at the beginning. I put a blanket or a towel on the floor next to my bed (something I don’t mind being chewed on). I usually tether the puppy with a light chain leash (something that can’t be chewed through) so that the puppy doesn’t wander off and have an accident or chew on something. I work on the exercises in the video until the puppy or adult dog shows me that they actually enjoy being in the crate (usually 3-7 days if the puppy has no previous aversive experiences with the crate) I want them to perceive it to be a safe place. At that point I introduce an open door crate at night. I put the soft bedding inside so that the obvious choice is for the puppy to sleep in the crate. Im in no rush to close the door but I usually can by the end of the first week without any crying or barking. Many people (even trainers) allow dogs to just bark until they “get over it” sometimes this makes the puppy/ adult dog so distressed that they bite the bars and damage their teeth, sometimes they vomit, involuntarily urinate or defecate and/or develop a permanent aversion to crates or other anxieties. I don’t recommend doing trying to allow puppies or adult dogs to bark it out. If a puppy or adult dog barks when I’m introducing the crate it means I’ve pushed criteria too fast and I need to take a step back. Thanks again for watching and for your question. - Alyssa Rose, CPDT-KA

Alyssa: Thanks so much for your thoughtful and detailed response. If I could give you 100 Thumbs Up I'd do it! The video link I sent you is a very good concept... it shows short cycles putting puppy in the crate and letting the barking/crying play out... over 5 cycles (plus two more cycles on another video), it shows the duration of crying getting shorter and shorter... it's very instructive, worth watching, but incomplete. NOW, combine that with your response and there is a fairly complete overview of crate training. Thanks!!

Some puppies /dogs would literally bark for hours with no end in sight, or they would stop barking or crying in one context but not if there was any change to the routine or environment. For these reasons I feel strongly about taking a gradual approach that moves at the dog’s pace. The results seemed to be stronger and easier to generalize. But again, I know everyone will take their own approach. These are just my thoughts on the matter. Best of luck with your puppy! - Alyssa Rose

lil peach Hi! You can do this training with your puppy even if you don’t plan to have your puppy stay in a closed crate. I keep open door crates in the house for my adult dogs to rest in when they choose. Crate training can also be helpful when traveling or if your dog ever has to stay at the vet. Thanks for watching. Bill Cosby's Sleepers hey! Thanks for watching. I was doing this training for a friend that was fostering a puppy. However a larger crate is not an issue in all cases, depends on how /why it’s being used. If you’re trying to potty train, and the puppy is sleeping on one side and having accidents on the other side - then it’s possible the crate is too large. But if you’re crate training to prevent destructive behavior in house, to create a safe space, or to help your dog relax in the event that a crate is necessary (like if they have to stay at the vet) you could do this training with a large crate. Thanks again for watching. Best, Alyssa Rose, CPDT-KA

Hey Dirk, Thanks for writing in. I usually have puppies sleep in a crate at night for the first year to help with potty training and natural tendency for puppies to chew. I keep the crate next to my bed. Beyond this, I think it's a smart idea to condition a puppy to a crate since there's a good chance that puppies will have to stay in a crate if they ever have to stay at the vet, or travel by plane. I will sometimes keep open door crates in my house for adult dogs, and they frequently choose to sleep there since it is associated with rest, relaxation and training. Thanks again for your comment. - Alyssa Rose www.legendsdogtraining.com

Hey! Thank you for your post. I don't like keeping puppies or adult dogs in crates. I do like to introduce puppies and adult dogs to crates in a positive way so that if a crate is ever needed at a later point in the dog's life - the dog sees it as a positive place that is associated with rest and relaxation. This can happen if dogs need to stay over-night at the vet. Crate can also be necessary for travel. I agree with you though, I avoid the use of crates during the day and I typically use an open door crate at night positioned next to my bed so that ultimately the puppy chooses to curl up inside with a good chew and a soft blanket.
