This ssa.gov site and process changes regularly. This is as of recording at the end of February/early March 2022. The site may look a little different to you depending on when you access ssa.gov. Feel free to reach out with questions. Thank you for watching!

This is great information and shows this important first step in applying for Medicare online is not at all difficult!

It didn't give me the option how I wanted to receive the activation code only that the code will be sent to me by mail.

I tried to set up an account on my own. WHAT A DISASTER!!!!!! Can the government make it any more convoluted???? So annoying. I live out of the country and as they say, Ain't nobody got time for this!" AND, guess what? I'm computer literate - not a genius - but I'm a working college professor using two laptops and a smart phone all day long. UGH Basically, it's obvious, the system is moronic. Honestly, not sure if I have the patience for all this. It is January and I don't need to start collecting till September. Is it easier to go to the SS office when I come to the States in the summer?
@Theretirementnerds Жыл бұрын
Yes. There are instances where, for security reasons, the online process doesn't work well. It can be very frustrating. Going into a SS office or calling is your best bet if online isn't working. Plan for wait times.

I need help i cant figure nothing out basically what forms i need to fill out
@Theretirementnerds2 жыл бұрын
The tough part about this website is that it changes often. The best place to go for help is to call your local Social Security office or stop in if they have been reopened to the public. Expect a wait time.
@bills1779 Жыл бұрын
I did all that, but now I'm supposed to get another activation code in the mail within 5 to 10 business days?
@Theretirementnerds Жыл бұрын
Yes, this does happen if there is difficulty in SSA connecting you with the information you put in. The code will come in the mail. Once you get it, you will go back to ssa.gov, log in with the Login.gov button and use the email and password you just created. After that, you will be asked for that code you will receive in the mail. After that, you will be good to go and will be able to access your account. It can be a pain!

My mom, who is computer illiterate, set up her My Social Security some time ago. Unfortunately when my father passed he took all log in info with him. What needs to be done to recover the portal log in with only a social security number available? No phone number or email verification.
@Theretirementnerds2 жыл бұрын
Hi Dillian, you're going to need to reach out to your local Social Security office. It's not an easy situation you're in, but the Social Security Administration is your only route at this point of getting into the portal. Be prepared for some wait times when calling in.

I tried to make an account but never did it ask me to create a user name so I figured it was my e-mail but when I tried to log in again it informed me that a user name can not be an e-mail address. I am also applying from overseas which complicates things further.
@Theretirementnerds Жыл бұрын
It does get more challenging for non-standard cases like you being overseas. May warrant a call to Social Security.

What would happen if made a mistake trying to get the code,,I noticed they were charging me $4 plus dollars via PayPal,,I didn't do it,,I got to the part where they asked me for my social security, etc,,the problem was the code cituation,,,,I exited out,,,what happens now..
@Theretirementnerds Жыл бұрын
We haven't encountered this before. Unfortunately, there isn't a lot people can do outside calling the Social Security office near you (prepare for a decently long wait time) or go into the office in person.

I am stuck on the activation code. It asks if ive received one, with the options yes or no. I have not and there is no way to request one.
@Theretirementnerds Жыл бұрын
There is a chance that they have mailed it to you and it could take 10-14 days is what it was when we last checked. It may be more or less right now. We had a client try setting up an account by information wasn't the same as what Social Security had so they had to mail an activation code. Not knowing all of the details, that could be what is happening. Or, if you put in an email for them to send the code, maybe check your junk or spam mail.

There is not a single KZfaq video about SS Account login that shows you how to retrieve my username?

Hi Nat, thank you for watching. They change their process... A LOT. We don't fully understand why ssa.gov changes things so frequently. It makes it difficult for people to log into their accounts. As soon as we make a tutorial on how to do something on ssa.gov, the site and process changes. We share your frustration.
