Jeff, you’re redoing the plot you were in. What will you be planting when you say back to basics? From you I understand basic to be half brassica and half greens with a couple of top dresses of cereal rye. Also I’ve seen adding winter peas in with brassica. Thoughts?

Appreciate how you laid out the thought process in this video. So, is this an indefinite quarter acre clover plot? Or is the plan to add to or change it next Spring?

Can you make a video detailing some of the jargon you use? For example, bench, saddle, etc? I'm a new hunter (started last year, but a lot of your videos are heavy on jargon that goes over my head

great info on these videos,,thank you,..I have a question about hunting pressure though..whats the best way to deal with being boxed in? ,,,I have a lot of pressure on 3 sides of me,the 4th side being my house and I can't seem to get deer to hangout there after summer or early fall,,they will bed there and fawn nearby ,I see them eating in my fields and then when the corn gets harvested which is a 1/4 mile in 2 directions it's deer gone ..are they leaving becuase the feed is gone ? ,,I was thinking some wheat,beans or brassica might hold them in until late november but I'm not sure...maybe I need to watch more videos to get more of a game plan worked out. :)

great content.... again.. curios if you have ever covered deer dispersal the following spring...when assessing your deer numbers in the winter, do you assess the fact that all immature deer in your fields now will not be part of next years herd with the dispersal studies out their... do you just assume all your young herd that leaves in the spring will be 1 to 1 replaced by deer dispersing towards your turf?
@jimreed3904
@jimreed3904 Жыл бұрын
that is a good point... never thought of that with winter/spring dispersal where all the 1 years olds leave the area ranging from 2-15 miles... guess it depends on the macro neighborhoods deer herd if you get replenished from other areas dispursels into your turf...for the most part I;m assuming its pretty much a 1-1 trade off but maybe not...mmm?

You mention planting clover plots which help the soil, but I have found in SW Lower Michigan even with multiple small plots the deer eat it up, and after a freeze it goes dormant and gone. Are you recommending to mix up the plots and add grains etc?
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 Жыл бұрын
Hi Mike! That's a tough call. If they eat it down to the dirt...perfect to later heavy rye on it. That will actually allow the clover to maintain or grow a little volume into the mid portion of the season. In SW MI I would add 150#s per acre of rye grain around Labor day, directly over the clover. I will do that here if needed too...

@@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 This works for me. Germination not great sowing into the clover but it's definitely there and eaten. Timing sowing with rain and mowing goes a long way to improve germination of the rye.
@joshcastle360
@joshcastle360 Жыл бұрын
@@dmouse522 Try running over the area with a plug aerator before over-seeding that will even make a bigger difference. And probably thin the clover a little bit helping those rye seeds get more sunlight. I do this to my plots and it works great, ill run it over going in every direction so I have plenty of holes for better germination. Many of the holes will be there even 2-3 weeks later typically and will allow you to use the rye layering method.

Try keeping them full year round. Once empty and you fill it again, it will take deer a couple of weeks to start using it again.

We literally have four feet of snow on the ground this winter. I don't see where brassicas, etc. would be available for the deer. Would hinge cutting that makes limb tips available to them be appropriate when thick snow levels happen? I guess corn might stand up, but corn takes more effort and expense that I can handle alone.
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751

Hi Rick...corn is about it at this point with that much snow. BUT, those hardwood cuttings, hinge cuts, shrub tips, briars are key right now!

@@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 Thanks. It's becoming a brutal winter up here with all that snow and now sub-zero temps all week. I don't have a lot of deer already and would like to be prepared in the future when this happens again as it will happen. I'm putting in food plots with brassicas and cereal grains later this year but will also cut some trees for extra late winter food.

What’s your thoughts on 30 acres of alfalfa ? With 15 acres of corn
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 Жыл бұрын
If the corn is left...great! Depending on the area the Alfalfa can be a real dud for the bulk of the season. Not a fan of that combo in general...unless planted on my neighbors 😁 There is a reason we have zero alfalfa in my own WHS Wildlife Blends...

So if you can’t split up a small food plot and get volume and diversity then go to a single crop base to get volume? And is it better to make those small plots the summer food instead of winter based?
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 Жыл бұрын
Hi Beau yes for sure...BUT NOT, a summer food source. If it ends up being hit too hard at the expense of Fall volume, than something else needs to be planted. Layering rye is what I use in a lot of northern areas. August planted crops layered with rye is another.

@@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 makes sense. They love the rye here (northeast Washington, north Idaho) and the oats peas combo. We get really hot here and it’s been hard to plant late season brassicas, so I’m getting nothing really on the brassica side. Going to try planting a lot earlier in the year and pray my brassicas make it. I’m not losing them to wildlife, I’m losing them to drought. We don’t get a very good late season grow unfortunately. Thank you for your help. I’m cutting a bunch of pines down for cover (beetle kill) and to get sun to the forest ground for regrowth. Thank you again for everything.

@@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 I have a very dry summer basically that goes right into a snow filled winter, so can a guy start growing his brassicas early and then be a good draw later or can your brassicas get to mature for a late season draw? Thank you again.
