🎉 This was a basic overview of my atlas videos workflow, but there is so much more to go over! What should I cover next? Lua or expressions scripting? Parallax scrolling? Finding relevant RAM addresses? Leave a comment and let me know what you would like to see next!

For sure the scripting side. As someone who’s been following you for a while, I’m super curious how you go about finding the ram locations from so many games (though I’m guessing for the most part they are generally in certain areas and it’s a bit of trial and error, but it would be interesting to see).

Love the content. Please keep going. I'm an 80's kid. I have a career, a family, and plenty of obligations. Being able to come back to see and her my favorite games again makes me happy. Not to mention, some of the technical demonstrations is just mind blowing that those things were there all along since the beginning, we just didn't know it. There is always another princess in another castle to find on this channel. Thank you for everything.

What an excellent overview!! Couldn'tve explained it in simpler terms. Tooting my own horn here, but I had lots of fun doing the Umihara Kawase Atlas vid with your help years and years ago, and although doing a some sort of a postmortem on it could be fun, there are so many things I'd do differently today that I don't think it's worth it. Something that was integral to making the video was rendering all the layers as separate passes so I could reintegrate the HUD in a nicer way. Doing separate layer passes is also necessary for many SNES games if one wishes to have stricter control over the background/foreground layers, so going over that could probably warrant its own video. I still really really want to make a PSX Atlas vid one day, but until the lua problems are sorted out, I can't do much. Dangit!

When I was looking through old tweets for this video, I came across yours talking about using Lua scripts with the help from xkeepah so many years ago. I'm still kicking myself for not taking advantage of that back then 😅 I'm sure we'll figure out doing this on PSX soon though!

I've always wondered how much was done. Thanks for the tutorial, would love to see more. I'm also thinking of experimenting with non-Adobe workflows, but that will require a lot of free time [from] me. The Lua scripts means we are off to a good start here.

Yeah, there's no reason paid software is required. It should be possible to get similar results all from just BizHawk & Lua, but it would be a little bit more complicated. I'd like to try it out at some point.

Dude, I remember that we spoke before about your methods on doing this a few years ago. Even then you were really transparent about your workflow. Now it fills my heart with joy that you kept on trying to find new ways to make the process of frame-by-frame keyframing easier by just using CSV files. As a designer (who sometimes has to produce a lot of content within a certain time) I've worked with Excel-sheets in AE before (or TSV's for that matter). Also have I used Bizhawk before, to record gameplay of some console games - but never used any TAS or LUA tools. But this video made me want to try it out myself. This video was really interesting, thank you for sharing this with us. Maybe some day I might give this a go too. And yes, I would be interested in seeing how you take it to the next level and implement paralax scrolling too. Bart.
@NESAtlas
@NESAtlas 8 ай бұрын
Thanks, Bart! I do remember blowing your mind when I mentioned it was all manual keyframing 😅 Thankfully my workflow is much more automated & efficient now that I can even produce an entire video in a single day. I'm not done improving it either as I think it can all be done with just Lua. I still enjoy doing this with After Effects so I have full control over the editing, but it'd be nice if I can build a separate workflow that is super simple for others to try out on their own with just BizHawk & Lua. Either way, I really enjoyed making this tutorial and hope to keep making more soon and I'm glad you found it interesting!

Your work here inspire me a lot, so it's really nice seeing your workflow! Since I don't have Adobe, my workflow is done entirely on BizHawk, by drawing the map directly there with the Lua script, and even handling fading transitions and custom HUD display. I see you use VGMaps, but did you ever had to make the game maps yourself to make a video of an "unmapped" game?
@NESAtlas
@NESAtlas 5 ай бұрын
Thanks a lot! I have seen your Lua scripts and they are really impressive. I think your method overall is much better too. One day I hope to try it out! And I have created a few small sections of map before for some games, but never for an entire video. I do rely heavily on maps already created by others.

This is great to see, but a little bittersweet to be honest! I've always wondered how you made these (I didn't realise you actually shared some videos of the process 10+ years ago!) and always thought it was some fancy emulator you'd made (but refused to share!). Potentially Gens-Atlas but I could never get it to work! Now I know! I thought the output of them had increased a lot recently, certainly faster than the manual edits you used to make! Anyway, I say it is bitter sweet because now that your technique is out there, I worry a 'bigger' channel will snatch it up and pump out videos at a rate you can't dream to compete with, or use their already massive fanbase to drown you out. I really hope this isn't the case, but modern KZfaq is kinda terrible like that, so I guess we'll just have to wait and see. Thanks for sharing though, finally I can sleep at night without wondering about it!
@NESAtlas
@NESAtlas 9 ай бұрын
In the past, I was embarrassed at how manual my workflow was, but now that it's mostly automated I feel much more proud to share my knowledge. I would actually be excited to see other channels use this information to make more atlas videos! One particular challenge that will persist is that each game will need a custom Lua script for this to work since relevant RAM addresses change and even screen scrolling logic can be different as well. At the very least, we can probably make a few standard templates that handle most of the common styles used in games, then it'd just be a matter of plugging in the correct addresses. Eventually, I would also like to look into cutting out After Effects entirely and just have Lua generate the final video. As long as people still enjoy watching these, then I will continue pushing forward while sharing everything that I have learned along the way!

@@NESAtlas ha, I've got a similar experience going on at the ROM hacking side of things. I started making tutorial videos about 10 years ago using the methods I was using (data corruption, save state comparison) but as time went on I began to realise what the values I was changing actually were (values in RAM or assembly code stored as ROMs) and now I can go in, find an exact address in next to no time or actually disassemble the game to read the code! I look back at what I was doing in my old videos and just smile at how naive I was and how hard I was making things for myself! Still, it's all part of the learning process and we wouldn't be where we are today if it wasn't for where we were then. Could you see an emulator that runs like this happening in the future? Given the huge store there is in VGAtlas, and what you've shared about the CSV outputs, I don't think it is too hard to imagine one that combines all this to make a playable version (even if the Atlas scenes are obviously static when not the 'live' section)!? I'm a little giddy at the thought!
@NESAtlas
@NESAtlas 9 ай бұрын
Yeah, I am pretty confident we will have some kind of method in the future to play games like this! I do think it will come down to having a specialized emulator built just for this purpose. Technically, you could do it all with just a Lua script as I believe others have come up with a complete solution for specific games. The framerates are very low though so it's not really playable, but it's still perfect for exporting a pre-recorded TAS. It's only a matter of time before someone figures out an efficient method that can be played live😁

Very intermeeting video and always wondered how. Do you make money with this? Maybe it sounds easy for you but for many do not want to put an effort even though they would like to. Most would play the game bad but I assume you got someone else speed run? Another idea is a gif animation of a map that shows how it goes though each room. Lets say Zelda 1 if it animated how to go though each room as a walk though at a glance. But then again making maps makes no money. If it did then more maps would have been made. I would figure your way in a way can make maps faster if you made another code? AI helps make a lot of code for non programmers. The structure of VGMaps has both positive and negative aspects. On the positive side, it provides maps and showcases variations. However, there are some drawbacks. For instance, the “Map of the Month” feature sometimes includes maps that are both labeled and unlabeled, which necessitates further editing as they are not perfect. Additionally, the site lacks a structure for viewing certain statistics and does not provide links to suggested comparisons when examining a map. For example, when looking at the map for Contra on NES, it would be helpful to have a link comparing it with Contra for arcade or other systems. Despite being aware of other sites that offer complete maps, VGMaps does not provide links to these resources, although it does link to other sites. Lastly, many contributors who create maps for the site seem to do a significant amount of work without receiving any rewards. This could potentially be improved to encourage more participation and contribution.

I do get a very small amount of ad revenue for these videos, but that can easily be beaten by a single tip from someone. I make these videos because I love retro gaming and I'm sure I can assume the same about the map makers that also put in so many hours creating content that everyone can appreciate. I simply enjoy sharing this passion with other retro gaming fans :) VGMaps is an invaluable resource and community that allows a channel like this to exist. The entire site is being maintained by a single person and relies heavily on talented people to submit maps they create for everyone to see. Some new features like the ones you mentioned would be great too, but I think the content is what is most important. Creating maps can be a difficult art in itself so I don't think what I'm doing can really help make that any easier. The same goes for TASVideos! So much effort has been put into that site by the community and it's great that I can showcase some crazy speedruns/tricks/glitches in these videos. I also enjoy collaborating with RTA speedrunners too so I'm always open to using gameplay from whoever is interested in working with me. The best way to help make all of this stuff better for everyone will always be supporting the communities and individuals who all contribute their time and effort for this passion that we all love!

You seem like a mellow fellow, and I've been enjoying your content for years, so I'm going to be as polite as possible. A face in my space is intrusive. It's a trend I've seen that makes browsing KZfaq psychologically painful for me. Thumbnails are filled with the most fake reaction faces, and videos are filled with somebody staring at me. It's *intrusive.* "But it's what the algorithm wants." That's what makes you stand out? Looking like everyone else? Panoramic views of video game stages; _that's_ what made you stand out.
