You can get similar images out of the Raspi camera too, it's a quite high quality Sony module. It supports 4K images, and although it's possible to record video at that resolution, 1fps is considered a "best case scenario". By tweaking the white balance, exposure and other settings the images it produces can be very good, although this all comes down to effort vs time, and for the "I just want it to work" side, you definitely made the right choice with your SLR.

Thanks so much for the video. I had installed Octolapse but didn't quite finish the setup. Then I couldn't understand why it wasn't moving the extruder out of the way. Your video showed that it was possible. I kept looking at settings until I found the correct one: It's the Stabilization Setting: Fixed - Extruder at Back Rght. Still getting the error about Absolute/Relative positioning. I thought I had the correct code put in, but then Octoprint failed. The timelapse still worked perfectly. Thanks again!!!!!

Nice hardware solution! I implemented it by software in the firmware of my machine. Sending a specific MCODE to the printer it will go to back, put an 1 in a digital pin (which saturate a transistor, closing the loop in the camera trigger), wait a fixed time to take the picture and return to position. The good thing about this system it's I can enable or disable the timelapse option in the menu of the printer in real time. I tried Octoprint but as my machine already has a lot of features that OctoPrint offers it doesn't make sense to use it.
