I did a key way much the same, I placed a machinist jack between the bed of the lathe and the chuck to hold it. The rachet strap worked good. you will be surprised how good the eyecrometer is LOL👍

eyecrometer, I like that! My eyecrometer has seen better days. kinda need the height gauge nowadays.

Why didn't you put the bolt on the opposite side so it would have pulled the keyway tight. This way it will push off the keyway making it loose.

the key sits between a shaft and the pulley. there is nowhere for it to go except fall out the keyway longways. hence the grub screw.
