Sponsored by SuperCove, Roger shows you just how easy it is to cut and fit coving using Super Cove.
SuperCove lightweight coving is available from many good builders merchants and DIY stores throughout the UK and Ireland, in various length options up to 4 metres.
Unlike plaster coving, with super-light SuperCove you can fix coving quickly and easily - adding value to your home with the minimum of effort. Cutting coving has never been easier.
SuperCove is faced with a high-quality paper-board - ideal for painting, with no need to prime. The polyurethane core, unlike polystyrene, will not melt or drip if exposed to heat or flame.
Find out more at: www.supercove.co.uk
Despite the fact that there are a lot of different styles of coving out there, the plain concave coving that has been the standard product for many modern homes over the last 40 years is still in big demand.
The big difference now is that there is a high-quality alternative to the heavy gypsum based product that we all used to fit a few years ago. Supercove has a polyurethane core that makes it exceptionally rigid and a white card/paper face that gives it crisp edges with a finish that often needs no further decorating.
The lightweight means that you can stick it up with a minimal amount of adhesive and it genuinely does not need propping or pinning. There are still many die-hard plasterers out there who would rather use a gypsum coving because they can run the corners in with a bit of board filler and close up any mitres which are a bit gappy. I would not dream of taking away their fun but for me, the cutting of accurate mitres is easy enough to achieve with the guides.
When it comes to cutting you have a choice of using the blue plastic Supercove mitre guide, your own mitre guide or a mitre box. The manufacturers recommend a sharp craft knife which produces a sharp line that doesn’t need sanding. I tried this but without a longer blade, it is difficult to set the knife against the former. If you have a sharp blade that it long enough, by all means, try this.
The mitre box works well provided you remember to set it at the same angle that the coving will be fitted. That is to say that the top and bottom must be equidistant from the corner. For me, the easiest way to cut Supercove is with a fine tooth saw because it allows you to set the blade against the guide to produce the correct angle.
If you are new to coving here are a few tips.
1: It pays to mark the top or bottom of the cove so you know which way you are cutting. If you keep the bottom towards you on the bench you will find it easier to orientate and make the correct cut at the corners. Internal corners have the long end at the bottom and external corners (around chimney) have the long end of the cut at the top. The guide allows you to do this easily.
2: You can buy Supercove in 3metre lengths but it is likely that you will need to join two lengths together. Some people do this with a straight 90-degree cut but it is a lot better to cut a 45-degree cut with your mitre guide and joint the two bits together. You can then run a damp sponge lightly across the adhesive/filler.
3: Always mark the wall and ceiling with a pencil so you get the coving evenly set between the wall and ceiling. If the corners of the room or chimney surround are not quite 90 degrees it is best not to try cutting the mitres to suit. Stick to the 45 degrees and gently roll the corners in so the mitre closes up.
4: If you are fitting around a bay with 45-degree angles you need to cut 22 ½ degree mitres.

With plaster of Paris your choice is limitless you can even design your own I and make it for you . I also have no issue with weight ,when you use a suction based adhesive .no screws in my mouldings I treated like a fine piece of furniture.

If you don't mind doing lots of joins then just do your mitres all in one go from short pieces leaving a 45° angle for butting on both sides. Stick the corners in first then relax and full in the gaps which is the easy bit.

Hi Ralph Personally I would rather stick with the 90 degree cut even if the corner is 95 05 even a 100 because you can run the coving in with a bead of filler. If the corners are cut at funny angles it tends to stand out. You can also roll the coving along its length to bring it in line. I will try and do another video on this.

Same problem as Don Logan below- I have a very old house and even tho the room has been replastered there is not a straight 90degree angle between the wall and ceiling. I am intending to fit this coving to my bathroom but I have a problem that the tiles that I am going to put on the walls are 10mm thick so will stand out beyond the coving. Is it best to pack out the wall where the coving is fitted or to fit it after tiling so that it sits on top of the tiles. I like the idea of putting them on after as then you don’t have to be to accurate with the cutting of the tiles as the coving will cover it, but will it look as good as tiling up to the coving.
@SkillBuilder
@SkillBuilder 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Alan I would put the coving on afterwards. It will be easier and no problem with gaps. You can stick the coving to the tiles with no problem and a little adhesive bead along the ceiling will catch the top edge.

HI I have a simple, may be, silly question ; how would do you cut the internal corners?? I know that you did mention it in the video but I found it hard to absorb. Thanks
@SkillBuilder
@SkillBuilder 8 жыл бұрын
+Ahmed Abd EL Gaw I need to do a better explanation. The internal corners are longer at the bottom that they are at the top. That is simply because they lean forward. Mark you coving with a pencil on the bottom edge and then draw a line from the long bottom to the shorter top. Then put your cutting guide on the coving and cut it. The coving will then slide into the corner leaving a gap at the top. Then the next piece cut in the same way will close the gap on the shorter top edge.

Great guide, but could have been useful if you told how to measure the coving before cutting. Sorry I am just a novice to ask this.
@kickpublishing
@kickpublishing 9 жыл бұрын
To calculate the exact distance of each edge of the coving from the corner (equidistant) I had to dredge Pythagorean theorem up i.e. A² + B² = C². According to the packaging, Supercove is 127mm wide - 127 squared is 16129 (i.e. C²). Therefore is we want it exact spacing we can divide that by 2 and we get 8064.5 - then we get the square root of 8064.5 and that gives us 89.8 which equates near enough to 90mm, therefore 2 guide lines (one on the wall and the other on the ceiling) and both 90mm from the corner would give an exactly even position - the video states 80mm however?
@kickpublishing
@kickpublishing 9 жыл бұрын
BerkyBoy Quick measure of the coving, despite advertised, it is in fact 115mm wide point to point not 127 (maybe thats the length of the curve) - therefore the correct distance from the corner is exactly 81mm so 2 lines drawn at 81mm would give perfectly "square" coving - as the video states reasonably accurately :-) Mystery solved.

light coving? avoid ...it doesnt take the paint well...its too flexible with long pieces gyproc stays rigid there fore easier to keep straight and level...i used the lighter stuff t and it was a nitemare......even doing a straight piece join i couldnt match even it was same size it didnt actually fit cos it wasnt from the same pack ...the manufacturing method isnt stable...and if the ceilings arent perfect level then more problems abound...it breaks easy , dificult to sand and susceptiple to knocks and dents just get gyproc i wont get the lights stuff again .....

It depends what you consider a nightmare. For me it is where the fun begins. Bay windows are good.

@@SkillBuilder fitted in the bedroom, no walls were square, i had to improvise greatly. To long lengths fitted and cut to the corners and fill in the gaps. This worked better. Lots of knife work. My missus loves your videos and is learning alot. thanks

Although that coving was easy to work with, it is horrible to paint.

+Mo Meknes Sorry to hear that Mo. We try our best but it is difficult to judge the level of competence of those viewing. If you tell us what you want we will try to cover the steps in an easier way. Is it the cutting or marking up that you need to know about?

+Mo Meknes That is a little unfair. Today was the first time I ever have put up coving and so far have managed to do 2 sides of our room incredibly neatly following some of the tips on this video. Everything you need is covered. Well done Skill Builder team

+Chris Woodman Thanks Chris. I can see why people think it is not easy to follow. You need to engage your brain. We want to do another one that explains it is very simple terms.

As a total beginner, I found this video very easy to understand. Of course once the basics have been explained like it is in the video, it does help if you have the intelligence to put it into practice.

Simple! I've done four 12 foot high ceilings solo, with gyproc coving and plenty of awkward 90 degree cuts which just needed patience, buttering up and a little sanding for a perfect finish. If you're not sure about an angle just pop an offcut up, pencil in the angle then transfer it to your full length piece.
