One edge where the adhesive goes used to be more rounded. Now it has ceiling edge printed on it.

I’m USA they don’t mark the back.. I see mouldings get installed upside down all the time.. but I just sand my floors and shut up. Nobody likes a know it all.

I just love watching you guys at work. I self built a rather large extension, yes just me. All the trades and love making things. My tool box is is full. All the tools for every trade. I reckoned if I was not employing labour I could go and splash out on equipment. By and large I got it right by reading ,watching and understanding the dynamics of the various materials from concrete to timber, to plastics. Watching your videos has been a total pleasure. I have to concede that when it came to plastering large areas I called in the cavalry, also the slater for the roof and the roughcaster for the harling (Scottish for pebble dash). Great stuff keep it up. I am just coming up to 73 and those big 6inch blocks are getting heavier by the day.

Going to put up plaster coving first time. Unfortunately builers have insulated 2 walls and left the old coving there. So the original coving is going through the new wall. I have to cut it back about 1' Take off the old coving replace it with new. Not looking forward trying to cut 45 degree angle whilst the coving is in situ. I'm 69yrs old. So fun and games.

Turned out great! here in Australia, most houses have cornice. Our general coving is same on both sides so you don't need to worry which way it is. I like that little cutting tool instead of the mitre box

I’m a DIYer who hates coving. Yet I’m still watching… remember fitting coving with my dad in my teens. No more nails and propping up up with all sorts of long stuff we can find. 7 out of ten times it would stay up.

My neighbours Ricky (next door) & Bert (opposite) were roof & ceiling men respectively. Between them, they fixed a leaky roof over my cloakroom and made the ceiling good. Bert's final touch was coving. Best room in the house.

Nice video with very in depth tips and things to think about. It’s not as easy as everyone thinks. I can tell you’re a cabinetmaker or something similar based on how you set up the room and pinged lines and care taken to get it right. I’m a professional plasterer and I would have had that whole room cut in 1 go, then put it all up in one mix. There is a way to blade the adhesive on about 100times quicker than that with just a trowel, goes on in one nice even bead. I use a mitre box and hand saw only, and there is absolutely no way you should be flipping the mitre box!!! It should only be slid from one end to the other. Another small advantage of using the mitre box is the cornice can be cut in just a forward cutting direction so the paper face isn’t roughed up if you were to cut on the backward motion too. So you don’t need to sand each end! The mitre box can also be used to hook your tape on you have to measure and cut 2 external mitres.

Great video mate, can completely relate to when you was on about the coving box and how it frazzles the head even after years of using 1 it still seems to catch ya out time to time! Mine was the wickes 1, I swapped about 4 years ago to the same 1 you was using and never looked back, I chucked the coving box away, it was enough to send a man insane 😂👍

Let’s get the fibrehand Bloke back from about a year ago and get him to talk about projections and stopping in using fibre fix casting plaster and mitres, I like the triangle tool it’s what I use best way I got taught with coving and cornice is that it’s like a reverse mitre and not how you do skirting, top video again chaps need a bit more of dan the chippy the Einstein of the carpentry world, don’t see many true old school builders anymore like you lot

Listening to you talk about using a mitre box for coving, it was like you were reading my mind haha. Done dozens of rooms using a mitre box, and still could never do it naturally without having to think it through lol.

I hate plaster coving but it sees to give a better finish. I tried the paper coated large coving about 15 years ago, all done properly and it was easy to do. Looked just like the plaster coving. But after about 2 months it started to crack on the mitres and along the lengths and one day I said the wrong thing to my missus and she stormed out slamming the door behind her and 2 lengths fell down. I was pretty pissed off as we had just sold the house and waiting to exchange contracts, out come the decofil and I stuck it up with that as it was all I had to hand, slapped some white emulsion on it. Just hope the new owners missus hasn't got permanent PMT like mine cos it will have all fallen down after a few months 😂😂😂😂

Nice job. I used to fit it as part of my main job, artexing (sorry). Never marked or drew lines ever. Make 2 test pieces about 1 foot long one with left and right internals and one with externals. Use artex as adhesive it stays usable for hours and cleans easier. If you use a caulker and scraper you can butter up a 3.5m length in 30 seconds.chuck your first internal up, use your test piece as a guide to twist up or down till the joint is tight. Put your next piece in and do the same in the corner/external with your test piece. Your joint in the middle can be adjusted to suit. Clean and move to next wall. That room you did should take an hour to do. Btw after putting miles of cove up never had any fall off, so no comments saying you can't do that.

Some years ago I coved a WHOLE flat wth the Swan-Neck coving - nice and fancy - if a bit expensive :-) ...... I was just putting up the last piece and then noticed! ....... I'd taken the writing on the back as the way the coving went UP! ...... OOPS!! .... WRONG! ..... The Builder just laughed, it looked just as good to a blind man ;-) ................ Surprised you didn't mention Artex as a coving adhesive ..... Always good for stirring up the comments ...... a bit like Fairy in the render ;-) ................ We used to use Artex when doing price-work ..... You could get a whole house on before you needed to get back on it to tidy it up .... And NO! it didn't ever fail either (To all of those GASPING at the very thought ;-)

My father was a fantastically good joiner, I asked him to help me put 6 large boards on to my main living room wall which was 24 feet long, if I was doing this myself, when I got to the sockets I would have disconnected the socket and made a little hole to fit the wiring through, no he said I will measure it and we will cut the whole so it fits over the socket, I thought that will never fit as well as my idea, they all fitted like a glove on a woman with 5 legs, amazing skill that I could never match

I’ve always used the mix yourself adhesive but tried the tube stuff last time, I was impressed with how easier and quicker it was although it needed a few nails to support until set. I don’t think I’ll go back to mixing the powder adhesive

I was always a massive forge fast fan coz I hated or Philips screws. But since the lockdowns my local toolstation never had any in stock. So I began buying the screw pack deals they had on of either the reiser cutters or the spectres and gotta say, they ain't as bad as I remember them. I never bother with any silver screws tho. They okay if you piloting but who has time for that when your just knocking up stud work or shutterinf

I once spent a weekend creating lovely diamond shaped holes for the coving corners, getting those internal corner cuts wrong time and time again. In the end created a set of template pieces to use to check the external and internal cuts. Not a job to rush imho

I was told to soak the bare plaster first, and you can buy adhesive in a tube and mastic gun it. Much quicker and stays white and doesn’t shrink. I learnt the hard way sodding stuff!!!!!.......

I like this, great tips etc. But id love to see (as with other jobs you guys do) some of these jobs done on "old houses", ie, tough jobs. Jobs where walls aren't straight and true etc.

Does the hundred mill trick only happen when you are reading the tape upside down? It happens to everyone once in a while, but I swear it only seems to happen when I'm working metric and an upside down tape. In inches its always spot on.

A friend of mine mainly works in feet and inches and he very rarely measures and then marks it wrong and he said to me that when you work in feet and inches there’s only one of every number! I do often use feet and inches myself but it seems to be frowned upon.

Top tip. The ceiling cut is 90° from the back edge. This is especially important when starting off using a mitre box.

First time I did coving I knew nothing. Looked good. Second time I knew only what I learnt the first time only I was more skilled all round, looked spot on. I literally slapped a few 3m lengths up on my own, no tacks or screws or pinging lines. I’m more of a stop messing about and get on with it attitude. Nothing in this video is wrong. But it’s much more fun learning on the job. James without a doubt was that guy in the early days. ✌🏻

Status coveeasy box seems to be no more, the macallister one looks similar. Two offcuts/opposites sets your corners/heights, and lets you know how close to square they are there and then 👍

“Hello Mate” Great informative and instructional video. The wood measuring block a great tip. I understand the thick edge to the ceiling each time. I have the metal cutting guide, but get confused on which way to position the guide. Does the point of the guide always go to the wall side ? I get confused and some of my joints/corners end up with the cutting edges with a large gap at centres, with the ends touching.. Any help appreciated.. x The Bigfella x

Get your self a gyproc mitre box £7 on line fits the coving perfect, ive been coving for 30 years it’s all I use, and a lot easier. Also brush some PVA glue thinned 50 50 with water on the plaster walls and ceiling this will stop the adhesive sucking in and make it easier to clean off

In a way I wish we built like the yanks do. It looks fun. Everything is stud work and nail guns. I think the English way is kinda better and more structurally sound but it's messier and a lot more awkward at times. I've just priced a garden room but don't think I'll get it. Was basically gunna copy oakwood garden room's way.

I agree. The English way of affixing coving is more structurally sound and adds a lot of strength to the overall building. Load bearing English coving is better than the panel pinned USA method.

Different climates, different requirements. The yanks build plenty of masonry buildings in the colder areas like Philadelphia for example. They do tend to build timber frame interior walls still tied in to a brick exterior.

You definitely won’t get it if you’re copying Oakwood garden rooms. Their prices are high because of their massive portfolio and extensive knowledge which is obviously portrayed to their customers when visiting them, which makes them spend the money.

Hi skill builder iv watched your video over about ten times and got it to a tee.iv a job to do which is a 90mm cove it’s got a slight concave in middle but has a small pattern on top and bottom of it will the wonder mitre still work on this

For the internal measurements get James a cheap laser measure - 30 odd quid and it’ll save a lot of time on longer runs where the tapes wobbling all over the place.

No just paint some diluted pva on the wall and let it dry for an hour.
