Watch me facet a piece of Australian Topaz I found in the design of a "Square Portuguese Cut". I'm an Australian Gem Cutter and I enjoy prospecting and faceting gemstones. Watch me find gems and facet gemstones from Australia and all over the world. I'm using an Australian Faceting machine called a "Facetstar". It was manufactured by a Melbourne engineering firm. Thanks Tori. White Topaz is the most common type. It so happens that if it's heated it can change colour.

White topaz, brilliant cut or marquis, is one of my absolute favorites. High quality stones have incredible fire.

@@VintageTimeGems I have a ring with a square cut gem In it from my grandmother. I was always told it was a topaz, thus my attraction to it as a stone. On a side note thank you for sharing videos I have gained many interests as I get older and videos like yours only fuel the fire!

I try new cuts etc on CZ. It is cheap enough that if I screw up I'm not out much. It is also safer than TV glass.

CZ is a good material to facet with. Not all CZ is cheap so you have to be careful not to mess up. TV glass or glass in general is absolute rubbish to facet with. Technically, I've faceted glass once in my life and never again. It's a total waste of time. Obsidian is a glass, but does have different minerals to form it and colour it such is volcanic ash. Glass is just silica (sand). Avoid TV Glass.

@@FatKidBrodyYou might try picking up inexpensive rough topaz on eBay; there's a fair amount of medium quality on there pretty reasonably, if you're careful.

Can you do a video on cleavage planes? I have a get topaz crystals that I plan to facet but I just cannot find any good videos explaining the effects of them during faceting. Great video and spectacular gem!

You just won me! Topaz is AWESOME and I'd far rather have it than diamond or CZ...IF it is good quality, white topaz has fire like few other stones. Lovely stone, excellent job and great video for those of us who are beginners! Question--someone said something about the C axis being a problem cutting topaz crystal facet rough; is that something you can explain/speak to? My particular fondness is for deep golden marquis cuts, you see... :) Thank you !!!

Thanks....Never heard of a C Axis issue with Topaz, but Topaz does have a cleavage plane that should be avoided.

Very nice! Question on topaz...does it matter in which axis you cut topaz? Do inclusion lines matter?

Topaz has cleavage planes so you need to cut 10 degrees off from the plane else it will cleave.

At the beginning of this video I noticed the fracture lines on the stone . It looks like something has hit the stone at a glancing blow. The same way that glass would fracture , like knapping a stone. Is this a good indication for identification purposes, that you have a piece of topaz instead of quartz ? Enjoyed ! Thank you.

That fracture line was the plane in the Topaz. All Topaz has a plane that runs through it. It should be avoided faceting directly on that plane.
