@Dfg Sdfg For some reason I am attracted to gemstones with large windows, is it just me, or anyone else?
@danmore8526
@danmore8526 5 жыл бұрын
@Dfg Sdfg No worries, I was not being sarcastic. I honestly sometimes just like to be able to see through the stone and see it's real beauty as opposed to just all the Brilliance and reflections of facets cut at the correct angles.
@VintageTimeGems
@VintageTimeGems 5 жыл бұрын
Yes it is slightly windowed. I will do a recut sometime of this again. Maybe in another type of material. The refractive index is low in quartz so it was cut below the critical angle. But I was following the angles as near to the original design, as I've always been fascinated with the history and origin of such famous gems. Next time I will do 16 facets per tier.

Just out of curiosity, how long does it take to cut a stone of that size, in general?

Hi Cliff, What speed is your faceting machine running? I notice you have 2 speeds available through your pulley drive
@VintageTimeGems
@VintageTimeGems 5 жыл бұрын
I'm really not that sure. I like to use the slow speed these days. At a guess I'd say between 500 and 750 rpm. I'd say top speed 1000 to 1200 rpm.

I don't understand the utility of this cut. It seems to waste the potential of the stone. This is not a criticism of your work or choice to do such a cut, I just don't see why people want such a cut.
@VintageTimeGems
@VintageTimeGems 5 жыл бұрын
Actually this type of a cut is the least wasteful of most designs as you are actually cutting around the outline of the gem. Most diamonds cut in the 18th century and before were only cut for weight. These days they are cut for brilliance, so far more rough material is wasted. Also, I wanted to see what such a design would look like from a historical point of view.

Vintage Time Does this cut have a name? I’m on my phone watching this. So if there are any posted comments from you on it I can’t see any. But I thought what a sparkling yes safe cut this would be for a large gem. Since their such easy targets to damage because of their size. A lower crown might be safer set in a semi bezel set. 🤷🏻‍♀️
