How To Cut Polycarbonate Sheets, Cutting Twinwall Polycarbonate, Home D.I.Y
In this video I will be showing how to cut Polycarbonate twinwall sheets using a hand saw and electric jigsaw.
Tools required;
Hand saw that has a high tooth count,
Marker pen,
Tape measure,
Spirit level,
Electric Jigsaw,
Work mate or alternative support surface for cutting on,
Clamps,
Ear defenders and appropriate protective equipment,
Vapour barrier tape,
Scissors or sharp knife
Definitely remember the old saying ‘Measure twice cut once’, especially when using the jigsaw. Also, electric tools move faster so any mistakes happen faster too.
Position the sheets of polycarbonate flat onto the ‘work mate’ support bench so that the U.V protective layer / side is uppermost.
Get help, if required, to manoeuvre the polycarbonate sheets without damaging them.
Use a tape measure to carefully mark out the length required. Run the tape measure up each side of the polycarbonate sheet and place a mark to each side, using a marker pen.
Use a straight edge to link the marks from either side of the polycarbonate sheet and then use the marker pen to draw a straight line across the whole width of the sheet.
Using the hand saw carefully cut the polycarbonate sheet, starting on the side furthest away.
If required, get another person to help hold the sheet of polycarbonate as it is cut.
When cutting the polycarbonate sheet with an electric jigsaw use the same marking out process but make sure to cut away from you to prevent possible injury in case of accidental slips.
Once cut, make sure to clean the cut ends of the sheet and securely apply the vapour barrier tape. Cut the tape to length once it is placed on the polycarbonate sheet so as to make sure the tape is of a length that covers the whole of the cut end.

Thanks for messaging and taking the time to watch. I didn’t think anyone would want to watch me saw a piece of polycarbonate but it is straight forward, just take your time and use a saw with a higher tooth count.

Thanks for the information. Much appreciated. So I can use the jigsaw to also just cut to size with a fine blade. I don't have a nice fine tooth long hand saw.

Hi Kevin. Many thanks for watching and your message. Since building my greenhouse I have also used polycarbonate for other projects at home and work. A fine toothed jigsaw bit works amazingly well and is so much faster then by hand. Also, using a jigsaw it is also possible to cut circular shapes without causing damage to the polycarbonate sheets. If you so require. Enjoy your creation 🪚

Thanks for the clear video about cutting, I'm going to get some to make simple short wind block panels around some of my veg beds, as we're in a windy location. I never knew about the vapor guard stuff and was thinking of putting clear silicon down the side with the holes. If I seal it like that, would that be a bad idea do you think?

Thank you for your message. Silicone will be fine to seal the ends to prevent stuff getting into the polycarbonate but if you have moisture already in the panel then it will be trapped inside and condense. If you are only using the panel as wind shields then it’s not really worth the hassle and cost of vapour barrier. Hope your vegetables are growing well.

I used it for a roof for my summerhouse, replacing the rotted wood and felt. I cut a clear silicone tube applicator to about 10mm ie really stubby, and made sure it went down each channel at least 1cm. You are stopping green mould from growing which looks unseemly, is the main thing. I see some crystal clear condensation inside, but zero green mould. I think it needs air to grow? This is functional, but I’d prefer a nicer capping for looks. Good luck.

@sleekitwan Polycarbonate is such an underrated material. Your roof sounds like a massive improvement over felt. I bet it’s a lot lighter in there now too. All the best with your other projects that I’m sure you will come up with 🛠️🪴

Hi. The sheets came from an online company called Roofing Megastore. They were easy to deal with and delivery was about a week. I would definitely recommend them. Good luck with your build and thanks for your message.
