Amir, in almost all situations you have a legal right to openly record on-duty police. Please Google "7 Rules for Recording Police" to read the article I recently wrote on the topic. Good luck!

I know there are tons of corrupt cops in the US, but I am thankful for the presence of the good ones. My family lived in Saigon during the fall, when there was basically a complete loss of law enforcement. People went completely nuts in the last days before the north took over, and there was violence, robbery, chaos everywhere. I'm glad we have largely have stability of law and order that's thanks in part to the cops that do their job.

@ReadyAimSkate They are public employees operating in a Public space, you do no need permission or to announce that you are filming. They have no expectation of privacy, and you don't have to stop filming unless you are obstructing their duties by getting in the way.

Cops often site the wiretapping laws with this, and try to get you to turn it off. I think you would have to look into the state and local laws, maybe talk to a lawyer or cop friend to see what the law actually says. Remember, the cops that usually want you to not film, are the ones that are afraid they will get caught violating your rights, so it is a very sticky situation.

IMA, you are free to completely lose your shit during your next police encounter. That being said, check out our "Always Be Calm & Cool" video for more advice on why you should remain calm and cool instead. (Did I mention you should always remain calm and cool during a police encounter?)

Being calm and cool will get you a lot further with ANYONE in ANY situation, not just with cops. I love when people are screaming their heads off at you, but you remain completely calm, it makes them look like ignorant twats!

@ReadyAimSkate It depends on the state's laws typically, I know in the state of Texas for example as long as you one of the parties engaged in the conversation you don't need the consent of the other party. However if you're filming a conversation between parties (which you are not either party) there are issues that can come up by filming them without their consent.

I very much appreciate the grounded and intelligent presentation of this information. Becoming a martyr for one's cause is noble, if in fact that is genuinely what happens. One does not become a martyr for the cause, however, by emulating the adversary. As Gandhi said, "an eye for an eye, leaves the whole world blind." It is far better to be an intelligent response than to be merely a reaction. I suggest a recent television documentary of "The Freedom Riders" as an example of such behavior.

hey...FOLKS...IF YOU HAVE A CELL PHONE BE SURE TO PUT A PASS CODE ON IT SO IF COPS CONFISCATE YOUR PHONE THEY CANNOT LOOK IN IT AT PICS OR PHONE NUMBERS ETC. THIS WAS NOT MENTIONED ON THIS GREAT VIDEO

Well done! A lot of great, intelligent advice that will likely prevent others from having to learn the hard way. The last sentence was a pearl of wisdom, in my opinion: That it's NOT about venting our frustrations- ♡♥♡It's about changing HEARTS &MINDS♡♥♡ I'm pretty sure I can apply that philosophy in my everyday life, too!

The UC Davis protesters were out of line. This was a very short clip showing the officer using OC spay on protesters. However, the police were surrounded by protesters and trying to move detainees to their vehicles. Those who were sitting and got sprayed were blocking the police's egress route. The officers were just in their decision (after MULTIPLE warnings) to use non-lethal force on these protesters. That is my only criticism of this video. The rest is fantastic information. Keep it up. :)

Thanks for the advice on AskingPolitelyForYourRights, shutting your mouth, not rocking the boat, or doing anything that might upset some cop who might overreact. I'll remember not to look da massa in the eye, keep my head down, sit at the back of the bus, and stay out of trouble. I'll walk on eggshells and modify my behaviour in case I might upset someone. And I'll consider the result all my fault. I see now that people that really try to FlexTheirRights deserve everything they get.

I am a biker and I would like to see something for motorcyclist. Seems like bikers are always getting hassled or stopped about something. I was stopped for having a my plate mounted on the left of my bike but the law doesn't really say anything about actual placement at least in NY that is. It does mention rear but rear by definition is any hind part and my plate is on the left side of my rear fender strut. It has all the other law structures. Light, able to see 50 feet away in the direction i

Educate Police about their true limitations: “Citizens may resist unlawful arrest to the point of taking an arresting officer's life if necessary.” Plummer v. State, 136 Ind. 306. upheld by the Supreme Court of the United States in the case: John Bad Elk v. U.S. “An arrest made with a defective warrant,or one that fails to allege jurisdiction, may resist arrest and break away. lf the arresting officer is killed, the killing will be no more than an involuntary manslaughter.” Housh v. GREAT video. I really like the way you approached the topic of protests, and what you said about thinking for yourself, because when people do not consider that it is often overridden by a 'mob mentality'. I'm also glad you touched on filming the police, and I hope there is a more in-depth video on that to come. I really like all of your points about good and bad civil disobedience. However, I don't think that UC Davis was an "outstanding" example of CD. Check out: watch?v=hhPdH3wE0_Y

@ReadyAimSkate Though I think I know the answers to all of those questions for my state(I believe it varies from state to state), I really hope he does a full video on this topic. Can the officers confiscate my camera/phone, ever? Can they go into my phone/camera and delete footage? Is it true that I can't record audio? I have seen several videos where officers cite wiretapping laws and force people to stop recording audio.

Here's another way not to get in trouble: get a freaking permit! If you have a permit, police can't do anything about the protest as long as the protest does not involve violence or any other illegal action. There ARE protest permits.

So answer me this lawyer-boy: If you advise me to wear a suit to court, and I refuse, and then the judge finds me guilty based on the fact I'm not wearing a suit, where is the problem? In the face of such prejudice you would be "right" to advise INDIVIDUALS to wear a suit. But the guy who doesn't is not the problem. You can advise women not to walk down dark alleys at 2am, but that doesn't give anyone the right to rape her, or make her in any way responsible - it's her right to be there.
