Decided to not send block out, this will be a fairly low budget build. Started with a good running 120k LH6 Aluminum 5.3L

What's the difference between doing this at home vs machine shop? *not talking about boring* just honing? Also, do you need to count how many ups and downs you do or just continue until each cylinder looks identical?

I always go by the look, Just keep going until you remove wear makes.. And then just make sure you check ring end gap in a few spots to make sure you will get a good seal. I don't use machine shop on a motor that was good running without issue that I am just refreshing with some inexpensive parts on a budget. Just a time and money saving thing. Kind of like me asking you why you just cooked that steak dinner last night and didn't go to a local restaurant and eat there

Can you deglaze the cylinders and reuse the stock rings? Or is new rings a must? I’m looking to gap the rings and boost my ls 5.3.

You technically could if the rings were not worn, but usually they are quite a bit, You would hone then check ring end gap with old rings, I would bet 99% of the time the rings are too worn. Rings are very inexpensive makes no sense to not change them
