I watched this video last night before I went to sleep. And I thought about it so much.. and your so right. I watch videos everyday I watch others colouring the same books pictures that I have.. and I think 🤔 why I can’t do this why can’t my picture look like this.. and than I think 🤔 I don’t need my pictures my books to look like this same colours copy because I have my own imagination and I can make my books my pictures look different like I feel like coloring them.. it’s nice looking at videos how others colour.. but the most important thing is to colour how you want and you feel with your own imagination because your own picture will represent just you.. so thank you darling. Because from now on I want my pictures to look how I want them to look even though I’ll make mistakes but they will be mine 💕💕😊😊 I love your videos 💕 thank you for inspiration 💕

I love it when someone picks up the challenge of Leila Duly's Floribunda or The Flower Year. They are my favorite coloring books. I look to color realistic images whether they be people, places or things. Your instruction on how to color hair, fur, clothing texture, leaves, you name it are greatly appreciated. I love Chris Cheng too - she's incredible. I await the day she returns to her Flower Year for another picture. I'm so happy you demo using Prismas. When I started watching coloring on KZfaq it was all Polychromos. Prismas were bad and to be shunned. Then Prismas became very inexpensive and suddenly everyone was using them. I'm over 70 and on a very fixed income. I don't dream of Luminance or Holbein. I dream of turning out good work with what I have. That happens to me, I can't find my own colouring style so I try to copy another's styles and that is frustrating because I forget I'm not an artist, I'm just a beginner, a simple colourist. Thank you for your video 😊

When you were trying to figure out what color the cerulean blue was, reminded me of Dede Willingham, when she grabs one of her Prisma pencils she doesn’t, really, know what the color is she is picking, when she is grabbing it, she is just choosing the color she wants. Only when someone asks her what color is it, does she look at it. I love your videos, everything about them, especially this new format, yes, I enjoyed them when you would just do a video of coloring a picture, but these new videos are so much more informative now, you are a great teacher on everything color, and you always leave us wanting more, just like I can’t wait for the next installment of this series. Great video! I remember when I first started coloring how I was ready to give up because I couldn't color like other people... But your so right it's just a matter of sticking with it and figure out what you like and what works best for you.

This is a wonderful video which I found very helpful in seeing how I have grown as a colorist and how to continue my growth. I am especially pleased with the great educational value here [I am a retired professor] in encouraging how to think about what the colorist wants to do. One of the most difficult things for any teacher is to find a way to encourage the student to find a personal way to use the knowledge that is available. You do that superbly.

I KNEW it was New York accent I was hearing !!!!! I’m from Midwest the accents are different!! I’m the one who was sooooooooo into one of your sessions and you’re working on a leaf and there’s a middle vein in it and you say …. “Now I’m going to apply the…..” well this gal hears “pasta” !!!!!!!!! Part of the schooling in art involves copying works by famous artists for the sake of understanding how they accomplished their work. It is so you can learn techniques, and learn to evaluate how to approach a piece of creative work. Not for the sake of slavishly copying. To learn the skills that get you to the point of doing your own work. There's a life lesson in there.

I am more familiar with other media, and am new to coloring, but many times I'll just look at a picture and say, that's mostly red with silver and pink and silver in the clouds for example, a dragon. Lovely coloring. and great advice

i understand exactly what you are talking about. you look at this picture you are about to color. you close your eyes and "see the picture colored" in other words, as you see this picture, it "tells you what colors to use". in your picture, i see the large flower a dark pink around the tips of the petals then it's blended to a soft shade of pink down to a light yellow at the bottom of the flower. it's telling you the colors to use for it but its up to you on how you want the colors shaded and blended. it's a process that takes a lot of patience and developing. but if you really love to color, you practice, practice and practice to the point of, "Wow! i colored this?"

When I started out copying other colorists I did it to learn. Chris Cheng is hard to copy, it took awhile before I could copy her. Recently I’ve started to just watch colorists for inspiration.

Thank you for this video. I'm one of those people that compares themselves to others. I'm too afraid and not confident enough to try my own thing, for fear of messing up the picture I'm coloring. I've been coloring yes, but I've been coloring along others...doing everything they re doing. I want to be my own person and I want to have my own style but I never know where to start! I guess it's all about practice. Practice, mess up then do it again. It's the only way I will ever learn. I need to experiment and take a chance and if I mess up...well who cares. No ones gona see it anyway! Lol

These are peonies and they are very soft in colour some even white or cream with hints of soft green love your videos and your teaching style thank you for taking the time.

Every time I view one of your tutorials I say to myself, "What is the lesson to be learned today?" Oftentimes it is not so much about techniques as such. It is about theory. Again not so much as it applies to art, but rather life. I know that is a different approach to take to your lessons, but if I can catch a glimpse of that then I can capture the vision of what you are putting on paper through colors. All that being said, what is the lesson here? For me I think very clearly as you addressed "copying" other artists or colorists you were telling me in no uncertain terms: BE THE BEST VERSION OF YOURSELF! Again I leave weak in the knees today and will long remember some simple blue flowers and my artistic guru......

Hi! I need advice! I just got a few different coloring books. I plan on getting The Enchanted Forest as well but I got Backyard Nature by Dot Barlowe, Forest Animals by Diane Gaspas, The Brothers Grimm by Forest Diver & Disney Dream Collection by Thomas Kinkade. They all just came in the mail today. I also got matte acrylic paint and I haven’t started coloring them yet. I’m not new to coloring but I am new to it in a sense where I have never tried to step outside of using normal colored pencils and markers and buying coloring books from Walmart. Now I am ready to expand and broaden the colorist in me lol. I don’t want to ruin the books so do you think it’s okay to use acrylic paint with these coloring books? And also can you recommend any high end coloring pencils with beautiful golds and sparkly colors as well?

Floribunda looks like a LOT of work, and not just because the illustrations are detailed. My main problem is not being familiar with what these flowers are so I can look them up and see what they are supposed to look like. Here's why this is relevant: all leaves might be broadly speaking green, but the play of green/yellow/grey varies depending on the kind of flower. A friend let me colour a picture in her copy a couple of years ago, and I remember emailing the picture to the Cambridge Botanical Gardens to get the names of the flowers, after which the job went pretty well. I just checked, and Floribunda is pretty much unavailable in the UK, but the same artist has another book out, called The Flower Year. Is that one any good? Especially the paper, but the images too, I guess.

I hate it when people compare artists to colourists. Someone like Chris cheng, I wouldn't class her as a colourist, she's clearly done art all her life and probably went to college for it, so for colourists to compare her other colourists is simply unfair and it's probably one of the reasons a lot of people were put off putting their pictures online, because they knew they were up against actual artists. Were not all in the same group here. I personally don't like Chris chengs style, I think it's boring, there is clearly talent there but I think she shouldn't be classed as being in the colouring community because normal colourists look at her work and think "oh if I work hard enough I'll get my pictures as good as hers", when her pictures are done from an artists point of view, not a colourists. I read about a few people who stopped colouring all together because they were getting put off with people like Chris cheng and maybe Johanna basford should stop giving help and freebies to artists like Chris cheng because clearly your average colourist needs more help than people like Chris cheng. There's a few other ones that JB gives help and freebies too and all these people are artists, not colourists. Go on JB try and sell your books to just artists and not colourists out there an see how far you get. It's the normal, average colourist, who likes doing it for fun who would be better served getting your help and freebies. Sorry for the rant but this has been bugging me for a long time!!

I was really liking this video until you said that once you can see it in your head finished and put it down on the paper then you have crossed the line from colourist to true artist. This is pretty hurtful to those with aphantasia (an inability to visualise or see anything in your mind) like me. I will NEVER be able to do that. And so now I am discouraged even after getting over 1K likes on my recent colouring page with everyone saying I am gifted and have true talent. There are people with my condition that are amazing artists so I really want to believe that what you are saying isn't true. :(
