Today, we'll disassemble and service the Kershaw Cryo, a gem of a budget knife. This is a fine knife to disassemble, but the addition of a speedsafe assist makes it a bit more complicated to service. Hopefully you learn something!

I found this exact model knife sticking out of a gravel bar of the Illinois River in February, 2022. This five year old video will help me bring it back to life. I appreciate you making this disassembly/reassembly video.

The multi-washer configuration is likely not a cost-saving measure. At least, multi-washer configurations in general are not automatically/objectively a cost-saving choice (though choice of materials, etc. may still involve cost-cutting). The more likely reason for using two washers is to ensure that the bearing (slip) interface occurs between the two washers, thus providing very consistent performance with regards to friction and wear characteristics. If you only use one plain bearing, then the slip interface must occur at either the blade/washer or frame/washer interface, and friction here cannot be controlled nearly as well. Typically, neither the blade nor the frame is properly prepared as a friction surface (with regards to surface finish, or the material itself), whereas the washers are expressly designed as bearing surfaces, so using two plain bearings together is a great way to produce a fantastic low-cost rotating joint with consistent and predictable characteristics. Actually, next time you clean this knife, or any knife with two washers on each side of the blade, you might try specifically NOT lubricating the washer/blade and washer/frame interfaces, then applying MINIMAL lubrication between each pair of washers. This way, only the washer-washer interfaces will slip.

Little trick that I use for speed safe knives to keep the door on when reassembling it is to just put a tiny piece of scotch tape over the edge of it and and inside of the handle. You can't notice it once the knife is together but it certainly helps keeping the pieces together as you do.

I have carried the Cryo 2 for well over 3 years with no issues of grease leaking at all. I just did my first full disassembly and cleaning. Grease is holding up great. Used a little Ballistol to clean the gunk in between the two sides.

I just finished cleaning my kershaw assisted cryo and I am glad I found your video. I took it apart then thought about throwing it away after seeing all the little parts. Glad I continued to watch your video. I cleaned it and while reassembling I discovered that when trying to mate the two parts it's easier with the blade side laying on a flat surface oil where the thin brass washer goes then put it where you can see where it has worn it outline. Then, put the door on and the holes at the top will automatically line it up for you, then put you torque wire in the little hole and then put a dollop of grease on then the other washer and finally put the other side on.

Nick, You really saved my Ass with this video. I sharpen knives for friends and family... When finished with the sharpening and inspecting my work, it became evident that a lot of schmoo, pocket lint, grit etc was inside the knife. Lets clean up the knife and return it good as new, OCD has a down side... To my great horror the speedsafe assist dropped on to my table as the knife was being disassembled. Yikes, Crap, Really? For God's sake no, no, no.. I might be going to Walmart to buy a Kirshaw... It was a pain getting this knife back together... With the video it was possible.. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU VERY MUCH... : )

Hi Nick, me again. I found this at Kershaw Most Kershaw knives require a Torx bit #6 or Torx bit #8 to fit into the head of the screws. The Torx #6 fits the pocket clip screws, handle screws, and safety lock screws on all current model Kershaw knives. The Torx #8 fits into the pivot screw. Some older models (prior to 2000) may use a smaller torx bit #4.

I'm pretty sure you put that washer on the wrong side of the door. Also reassembly is much easier if you just put the door and spring on before the scale.
@AuraMaster77 жыл бұрын
Josh Starkey the washer is correct on the side of the door. If you watch back to the beginning, he flips the door over when he takes it out, and so the washer that is then facing up, was on the inside

That's really interesting mine only had one washer per side and they are significantly thicker then your ones. I opened mine and relubed it because it was really scratchy. What's really weird is that the knife now wont properly actuate. The blade gets stuck. But it's not because I overtightened the pivot. It does it even when I completely back the pivot screw off

I lost my Cryo before I got to service it. My Cryo 2 however had only 1 washer each side and no washer was behind the speed safe door.

I used your instructions to disassemble a Kershaw 1555TI and the 2 washers that come with it are for each side of the knife pivot point. I got it all assembked & the only problem I've noticed is the lock bar doesn't go into place to lock the blade in the opened position. When I pushed it in it stuck?!? What would cause that? The knife deploys better than it did before. My hubby found it & I took it appart & it had a lot of black gunk mixed in with the grease & there was dome rust that I buffed out & I put a thin coat of silicone grease on it & wiped it off leaving such a ghin costing that you couldnsee the grease. I used silicone grease on place of the red grease you used. What would cause the lock bar not to work?? I'm at my witts end trying to figure what the problem is eith the lock bar not functioning.

@johnrowley77464 жыл бұрын
I think this must be correct, as the milled out pocket for the speedsafe door doesn't have an additional pocket area for the washer. You would think the handle/scale would have an additional pocket to fit the washer if it were designed to have the washer between the scale and the inside of the door.

Is the Cryo 2 the same in terms of taking it apart?
@emperor911084 жыл бұрын
My version came with one copper washer that was standard thickness. If anyone is curios about removing the thumb stud it does not screw together. It is pressed together like a rivet, so you will have to grind it off with a Dremel.
@faceplants22 жыл бұрын
Same here. Did you happen to get the limited D2 steel version of the Cryo too?
@faceplants22 жыл бұрын
I've got the D2 steel version of the cryo and it only has a single copper washer on either side of the blade. I wonder If the difference was just a revision in all of the designs or if the harder tool steel of the D2 version doesn't need a second washer.

thank you! I disassembled a cryo 2 and this was still helpful. It had been years since I messed with a speedsafe pro tip when you disassemble a knife do it over a tray or paper plate or something because washers or screws or little pins like to vanish. Also take a picture or a moment to study the knife as it comes apart. they come apart much easier than they go together. The Kershaw cryo series are one I always recommend to people who are just getting into knives and are ready to move up from a gas station junk knife. The Cryo is a beast, has a very satisfying action and is also very easy to sharpen

My friend’s Kershaw knife is suffering from terrible early lockup that makes it unsafe, I’d like to fix it for her but I also think I’d be out of my depth taking it apart with the speedsafe. Any suggestions?
@AuraMaster77 жыл бұрын
Maybe it would be easier to reassemble if you started with the speedsafe side down? And build on top of that? That way you don't have to worry about the door or anything, and the only thing your trying to manipulate is the blade itself

My Cryo came with Teflon washers, is it normal for a knife brand to use different materials (ie. Metal washers vs Teflon washers) in same models? My version is the 1555ti. Thoughts or comments? Thx!

Seen some people around using loctite... Does it make any difference? Would you recommend it?
@QQDescry6 жыл бұрын
Would have been a lot easier if you didn't try to assemble the whole speed safe mechanism into the scale and fidgeting with it onto the knife. Should have installed the washers and blade onto the bottom scale. Then install the speed safe plate, torsion bar(hook the one end into the blade hole then just leave it laying in the middle of the plate and it will go into the speedsafe chamber/cutout) then the top scale. Would have been a lot easier and less messy.

as long as the bits fit well, no problem. But on a new 1830 (OSO), the Torx #6 will not quite fill the small screws. The Torx #8 bit works well on the pivot screw.... But the Kershaw kit of bits has only #6 and#8 sizes....

I do not have the correct drivers to take mine apart but the spring no longer works on mine. I am not sure if it broke or slipped but it no longer works. The knife stays closed when it is closed and stays open when it is open so with the lower cost of this knife and the fact it is still functional as a knife it does not bother me much. At least not enough to buy the bits just for this knife.
@bayoucity14 жыл бұрын
Bought one of these on sale at bass pro two weeks ago. The assist stopped working earlier today. Took it apart and the spring had snapped. I've deployed it less than a hundred times. Put it back together "deassisted" and it's a slug. Putting it back together was a nightmare. I'm done with assisted knives, and I might be done with Kershaw.

My Cryo II's pivot screw came not entirely flushed into the body. Saw in your video that you didn't bother removing the pivot screw on the opposite side (in the video, you said an ancient evil was holding it in place). Should I attempt push it out?? Or just leave it in peace.

I took mine apart and realized I didn't have any extra grease after already wiping off the stock stuff. So then after spending literally half an hour jamming the washer into place and trying to keep it there without everything falling apart, it resulted in a knife worse off then it was originally due to rattling in the assist chamber... Obviously I'm not blaming you, but I now know to stay away from taking apart assisted knives...
