Extremely helpful. Got this knife as a gift from my grandfather when I graduated high school and have carried it in my pocket every day for 4 years and on a wild land fire crew. Finally got it taken apart, cleaned out a big pile of gunk, and got it greased. Your video was absolutely instrumental in getting this knife serviceable again, thanks!

So, I followed, minute by minute your video on cleaning a Kershaw knife... I had just purchased the knife 2 weeks a go on our way home from OBX at a Military Surplus store I like to look through each time we go there, and let me thank you for that video! For a newb to the knife scene it was a great, thorough video to help me give it a good cleaning (and man did it need it). Thanks again and keep up the great videos... my new favorite channel and a new subscription!

Excellent tutorial, sir!!! Thanks for taking the time to do a video like this one. Even though I don't own a Kershaw Leek, I do own a Kershaw Cyclone 1630 TBLKST & a Kershaw Cyclone 1630GRYST. Sort of my own personal "set" of Cyclone Knives. I've owned both of them for about 15 years now and I bought them both brand new. I really liked both of them and I couldn't decide which one to buy, so............I bought both of them. Lol...I just recently started to carry the TBLKST, prior to that, they both sat on a self in my Gun Room for all those years, along with a few other pocket knives that I never carried. On the shelf were the Kershaw Blur 1670 TBLKST, CRKT VOODOO, CRKT PHARAOH, CRKT MY TIGHE and the CRKT MINI MY TIGHE. They were more of a decoration than anything else and I never used them ever. I do carry 2 knives on me at all times, as I did for years before I retired from the Sheriff's Dept nearly 2 years ago now and I always carried a CRKT M21-14SFG and the CRKT M16-13SFG both with their new VEFF Serrations, which I preferred over the older style. Before that I carried a Spyderco POLICE and that thing took a lot of abuse but it stayed in one piece for nearly 20 years I want to say, before I thought, it's time for a change, and that's when I went with the CRKT M21 versions and then my last 8 years or so I went with the 2 CRKT 'VEFF' knives I just mentioned here, plus a boot knife, being a Cold Steel Safe Maker I. Anyway, to get back on point here, I figured that I'd start to carry the knives on my shelf but I found that they opened quite slowly now compared to when they were new and I searched for a 1630 Disassembly video and didn't find one, but I found your video instead and after I watched it I figured that Kershaw would probably use the same basic build technique and sure enough, they did, more or less. So, I've just finished striping both of them down, cleaning them and greasing them and then putting them back together. My god...it's like they're right out of the box again!!! So, thank you for a great video and for explaining your process and not just flying through the video, so that non-knife people can actually keep up to you, while learning something on the way!!! I appreciate the time it must take to record, then edit, then upload so I did want to say thank you for the hard work and that I appreciate your time. Stay Safe, sir!! :)

Great video, I personally never lube the brass washers or that area in general because it tends to build up grime when I do and those washers are designed to run dry, from what I understand. Also at reassembly, if you put the 3 screws in handle and through the plastic spacer you can hold everything together while setting the scale back on the knife. Took me a while to develop this method, but now I do it this way every time. Again, very well done on this video!

Your comment about the tip lock made plenty sense to me. I just got a new Leek and it is very smooth open. However the tip lock bar broke off very soon after I got it and it opened up in my pocket, so not so cool for. Will send in for repair instead of ordering the part since it is so new and obviously was factory defect.. Thanks for the video.

Nick, I think the first few flips were grimey because the torsion bar was burrowing a track in all that grease, after that, it had a better path where it would still contact the grease (so there is no rattle) but not drown in it.

So just got everything disassembled…noticed break in the metal of one of the side panels, in the main bolt hole that holds the blade. This is the side panel that holds the speed safe cavity. Should I be concerned? You can see the background change as I move it over the table. Last thing i expected as I followed this awesome vid. Just wondering if it’s still good to put in service of if it’s done? Gonna reach out to Kershaw about this as well. Just don’t know enough about this stuff

Got a rookie question: What is the deal with the wavy discoloration on the blade? I've seen blade tempering where the craftsman covered part of the blade with clay or plaster to affect the heat reaching the edge of the blade. Is there a connection here?
@NickShabazz9 ай бұрын
They've bonded two kinds of steel together, and the discontinuity is where they attach.
@jskrawz46116 жыл бұрын
The blade has been treated so that you can see the two different steels better.... Soak in vinegar for a few hours and the edge portion will darken... Pretty cool... Somehow... I don't use this knife all that much... Rather pocket my Spyderco Native 5 or Manix 2 lightweight...

I didn't have grease when I cleaned out a speed-safe knife a few weeks ago. I ended up using Vaseline. Was that a bad thing? Seems to have worked.
@NickShabazz6 жыл бұрын
The problem with vaseline is that it'll melt down next time it gets good and hot, and drip into the action. Might gum things up, but it won't 'hurt' anything. Worst case, you clean it out again.
@daveglarner21386 жыл бұрын
Nick Shabazz. Thanks man. I knew there would be a story like that. Luckily, you're doing a great job making me less intimidated to pull apart various knives. I'm starting to do it to relax now. I'll get some grease sometime and go back in. Thanks so much.
@CnCEmpire6 жыл бұрын
Also don't use it for food prep or get it wet, petroleum jelly won't grow bacteria if it's clean and dry but as soon as it gets moisture added to It, it makes a great enclosed environment for bacteria.

Speedsafe ultimately turned me off of Kershaw.. do I know there are good ones out there? Sure. But in my early knife days, I went through three Kershaws.. a chive, a scallion, and a baby boa. I didn't really like the speedsafe to begin with.. (ok I admit it was cool at First) but I ultimately just saw it as an inevitable fail point. I recall reading something about being good for 10k cycles in their literature and that definitely scared me.. that number can come up pretty quick if you like to play with your knives. Once my 3rd failed, I ended up getting a full stainless dragonfly and never really looked back at Kershaw catalog.
