The American Dream is and has always been a nightmare… those who want it should be afraid. When I was a young lady, I changed jobs just because. People would say … I was unstable. Guess what at 50 plus, I have a house, I have excellent transportation, had children, had a husband (deceased). Did not follow the script and I feel fantastic.

I feel like I’ve been here for a while, since 2015 after my aunt died 2 years before retirement after so many career sacrifices. Her death is what inspired my debt free journey because I recognized that I didn’t want to have to work until society says I don’t have to. Now that there is much more conversations about opting out, I’m much more comfortable talking about it. I’d be so reluctant to announce or talk aloud about feeling like this because it was “abnormal” I really appreciate your content

Me too! I’m there with you sis. I’m opting out of the “Oh you have to work til you drop dead or have 2 toes in the grave” club. That membership does not work (no pun intended) for me. 😂 I came across a post that says: “You were born to do more than work, pay bills and die.” That did it for me! It changed my whole perspective on things. I only wish I knew this many many many years ago. Do what is best for you. Wishing you all the best. God bless😘

I think the true issue is for everyone to define what the “American dream” means for you individually. We all know that the American dream says for women (for example) to go to school, make good grades, graduate, and get a nice and comfy desk job. Then, eventually settle down, get married, and have children with a white picket fence. But YOUR individual “American dream” may be to never get married and freely travel the world, or to never have kids but to solely take care of the elderly, or to ditch college and be a business owner, go to the military, etc. I think everyone needs to find their level of comfort in life, be happy with that, and live peacefully in who they are!!! 🤷🏽‍♀️

I have evolved into this mindset during COVID. It's great to see other black women like myself who wants what's best for me, not what society, friends and relatives 'feel' as though I should have or be. Thank you for sharing your perspective. It's so refreshing.

I honestly think most people don’t even truly KNOW who they are or what they like because someone else has told them who they “should be” or what they “should like or want or do” As an RN I have worked with a few doctors who didn’t even want to be doctors 😳 So when I’d ask “then why did you become a doctor?” The overwhelming response would be “because my father and grandfather was or my mother said I should. In some cases most of their family members were doctors so everyone just followed suit. I often thought for many it was the title, the prestige or the money. Side note: Many doctors are just as broke as other folk. They just have nicer “things” because they make more money but they also spend more money to look the part. Nevertheless, I think that most people’s focus is typically just on working and paying the bills and/or keeping up with the Joneses so they don’t have time to know who they are and what they like. You’d be amazed at how many people don’t even have a hobby or just something they enjoy outside of work other than drinking and partying on the weekends to numb the reality of having to go to work come Monday morning. Been there. Done that! And I’m done. There’s so much more to life but we often don’t have “the time” to live. Many people are just existing, not living. There’s a difference. I’m all about time freedom now. That’s the essence of true wealth to me. It’s about holistic living…mind, body and spirit not just a car or a purse or brand name clothing. I’m a believer now that I am my own “brand” so I have to define that for myself. Many people don’t have or make the time to tend to their own health and I’m often so so confused why retired folks say “they are bored” and so go back to work. That’s like escaping slavery and not even being caught then deciding to voluntarily return to the plantation. I’m sorry that may be a grim analogy and no disrespect to my ancestors but there is the phenomenon of “the corporate plantation.”
@belindamarie3222
@belindamarie3222 Жыл бұрын
I hear you about that plantation mentality. I'm 68 and have recently started receiving my Social Security. It is not nearly enough for me to live on but I'm determined to find another way to supplement my income rather than go back to that plantation. I love being free...to be me!

This is so true. I’ve never said this out loud but I’m 58 and still don’t know who I am and what I want. I feel comfortable in this space expressing myself because I didn’t realize so many people are just like me😢

I’ve come to realize that we have been conditioned to fear self governing. Imagine if you were the true captains of your own ships? That comes with great responsibility and I believe it removes the “they!” I study indigenous cultures and I realize that they really do self govern and outside of the elders and spirit or spirits they don’t really answer to anyone or anything outside of “self!” I often mourn the fact that so much of our natural way of being has been stripped and oppressed. I watched “the last forest” last night on Netflix and something about seeing the women just naked and weaving baskets and communing with nature just made my heart hurt. I wish we had that depth of freedom without judgement and without intrusion. Nothing about this place is natural/organic! We have literally succumb to the dream world of the inorganic ones…

You hit the nail on the head: people do not ask “why” enough, if at all. “Why” do you want Gucci or Louie? Because those brands actually speak to you or because people are always yelling about how important they’re ‘supposed’ to be to you?

I have always lived my life at my own pace..partly due to special circumstances and because my body and mind just cannot handle stress. I tried it and my body and mind broke down and I became ill. So consequently I never became financially successful in this society's view...BUT in my own eyes I am successful..as I am less stressed, more at peace.. "freer" and being myself. I'm 68 years old and still living independently. I honestly think had I lived "their" American Dream I would not be still be here, or I would be so very physically ill or mentally ill(on drugs or an alcoholic). Thank you so much for this video and for all your wonderful thoughts and ideas on living a life of joy and more ease... one on your own terms and much as you possibly can. I am enjoying all of your videos!

Gurl!! Im soaking up EVERYTHING from this America Dream series. This resonates with me soooo much, friend. What you talk about is why we moved from the DMV to NC. But it hasn't been easy at all, so much so that I was just recently questioning everything after being out of the cities for 4 years. I've asked myslef "Should I just go ahead a go back to an unfulfilling 9-5 job and give up this homesteading dream?" "How can I ever save enough for retirement as a homeschooling mom?" Anyway - your vids popped up right on time reminding me of my "why" and challenging me to really think outside the box to make this alternative, fulfilling path work!!!!

I love that you want choice… in America we have the illusion of choice, and by re defining what each of us want, will create our choices. It’s a better solution than masking our horrible feelings about society. Great video. I love the you don’t use music or talk super fast and loud. Got you. My education pointed me towards a management role, but I sucked at it. I was not happy, but more important, my team was not happy. No matter where I worked, what training and approach I took, it stayed the same. So I quit my job and found work in my profession (which I love) and looked for a position I work in a team and with people but do not have to manage and I love it. Gives me energy. Living in Europe we have more vacation days then we use a year so I take every last Friday of the mont as a vacation day and this allows me time for myself.

Love yah!!!! Great that you know what you know at this point in your life; in your youth. "Tenderness, kindness and love". To live life in this way is what it's all about. Some of us learn this later, hopefully not too late. The constant striving and being "hard-working" is killing us!!!! Time to know when enough is enough........Time to slow down and cut out the "struggle".

The American dream is meant to keep us being working wage slaves and give all our time and energy into dead end jobs and only realizing close to old age we spent much of our life doing things we didn't want to do for a false dream that could never be more valuable then spending time doing what you enjoy.

Glad I found your Channel👭🏾. I'm going through this with my channel as well. You can diversify your interest on other platforms that's what I'm considering. I've also recently started an Instagram page called cuddletherapynyc to address the social disconnection problem. And how the culture is so anti life and I refuse to participate in it also bc I KNOW HOW EXPENSIVE THOS "NICE" THINGS ARE. I'm also a cuddle therapist. 🦄
