In this video, Jeff from Sorta Healthy explains how to do a fitness assessment as a personal trainer.
As a personal trainer, you should regularly be performing fitness assessments on/with your clients in order to see and track progress, modify their program and set new goals.
We perform full client assessments every 6-8 weeks to ensure that clients are making the changes that they are looking for.
If you are a personal trainer who is not doing fitness assessments and would like to, or needs a solid form to perform assessments with, you can download the one we use (and our assessment analysis!) by going to:
www.sortahealthytrainered.com...
Check us out here as well!

Wall sits can be much more difficult for certain leg proportions and easier for others so I'm not sure how much you get out of the assessment. A long femur individual may be exerting twice the effort for the same time as an average individual. Well idk if it's actually 2times but there is definitely a noticeable difference.

What is the software that you use to record the assessment data? Does it come with the standards that you showed?
@SortaHealthyTrainerEducation
@SortaHealthyTrainerEducation 4 жыл бұрын
The forms in this video were originally made in Canva. I print them off, record everything in pencil and then store each assessments in the clients personal file. No software is required to use there, however, if you prefer to record it digitally, you can upload the assessment form into google drive and write on it as a PDF in LuminPDF. I hope I answered your question. The link to download any forms are at sortahealthylifestyle.com/downloads.

Would you recommend the step test for clients who already have quite good cardiovascular fitness, or only for beginners? It seems a little easy, that's all, but when I look at some of the other cardio fitness tests out there, they seem too difficult/complicated.... and I'm not sure what a happy medium would be?! Would it work to have clients run/cycle/row for 5 minutes as fast as they can, for example, and then measure their distance and HR? Thanks for all the informative videos!! :)

Thank you for the kind words! Always remember that the point of an assessment isn’t to challenge someone, it’s to assess them. If they’re already strong in some areas that will show on the assessment, as it should. The three minute step test is good for all fitness levels. If they’re really physically fit in a certain area already, they’ll just score in one of the top categories for that specific test. They may not score as high in other areas of the assessment. I do include the airdyne test in my assessment as well, but that’s not because the step test is too easy for anyone. It’s included because multiple tests, and variety, is a good thing.

This is helpful, but can you also do a video where you go over the types of exercises that are useful for fixing different postural distortions? 5:24

@SortaHealthyTrainerEducation Жыл бұрын
Thank you! I don’t have a video that focuses solely on posture (I’ll probably do one this year) but I do have a lot of videos that cover the subject indirectly. Basically, focus on strengthening the backside of the body extra. Focus on loosening over tight front side of the body muscles. Then also try to get clients to assume better posture on a day to day basis (get them to stand more, slouch less, etc) There’s more to it than that, but that should give you an idea!

If we substitute the pushups for the bench press, how would be showcase their performance on a similar scale to the other exercises? Do we just type the maximum reps and then compare their later performance to the initial one?

Jeff, I have some questions. BTW I've subscribed lol The assessments have made me scratch my head a lot whilst studying to be a personal trainer. Anyways, potential clients who are annoyed or bored that they have to 'do' assessments that want to jump right into weight training, how would you handle this? You would have to terminate the session, right? Another thing too, it's not okay to do the same assessments for each client is it? I'm studying with ACE. So using the IFT model. Example, still in the phase 1; What if I found tightness in the adductors and abductors. Would it be ok to use the machines (which have helped my squat and lunge form considerably) considering it is technically resistance or would you (personally as a trainer) use bands or just body weight in the beginning - phase 1? Sorry for all of the questions. I don't know a lot of established trainers and I've been scoping out your videos on the ACE exam for months now! lol Love to hear back from you!

Thanks for the support! It’s very appreciated! If I have a client that would really rather just jump into training then I’ll skip the assessment. Assessments are recommended but not mandatory. I think machines are totally fine! If you feel like they’ll benefit your client, use them! I wouldn’t necessarily just do body weight with any client. Pretty much any client can handle some level of external load, whether that’s in the form of free weights, cables, bands, etc. Some assessments will be more appropriate for some clients rather than others. It’s probably best to have a standard assessment process and then modify/remove certain parts of the assessment if they won’t benefit a specific client. Hopefully, that helps! If you have any other questions let me know!
