An alternative to Dullcoat to knock down gloss when using Tamiya X-19 Smoke: Add a little X-21 Flat Base. This will turn the X-19 to flat or the level of gloss that you desire depending on how much X-21 you add before thinning. Also, if you want the smoke darker, lighter, browner, bluer, etc. just add another Tamiya colour to the mix as appropriate. No need for a dull coat as a second step if you don’t want to.

I'd use either Tamiya smoke or Tamiya weathering master. They work great.

I have an unopened bottle of Testors Dullcote. How do you thin it, and then how do you clean the airbrush?

I shoot dullcote straight, no thinning. Shake well to get the best results. To clean, use lacquer thinner. You can also thin with lacquer if you want.

So I'm going to create exhaust/carbon stains on a Y-wing around the missile ports. This was the way I was planning on doing it. Would you change anything up for that?

I do this technique for gun smoke on aircraft. Should work for you as well.
