I am rather old. I grew up listening to the Carter Family and other early pioneers and just figured out what they sounded like. So a lot of the old time music I play (and also write) uses low bass-note melodies and treble-string chords with internal hammer-ons and pulloffs. I even hammer and pulloff two or three strings at once. I usually use three fingers for the up and down strokes, but sometimes just two and even one finger, like Mother Maybelle. Other songs I play and write, especially if they are more bluegrass-oriented, I'll use medium or very fast temp banjo rolls, but still include hammer-ons and pulloffs and a lot of bends. If they are blues, especially Delta, I include a lot of slides, too. In bluegrass I do a lot of riffs and runs that include the high strings, but the blues really let me do high-string melodies. You have a great channel and do an excellent job teaching. Laid-back manner, clear and yet concise. I never really knew much about Hill Country blues until I discovered your channel -- even though I always loved the sound. Thanks to you, I know write songs in that style. It's hypnotic to play.

Mother Maybelle said that she used the thumb and finger picks to bring out sound on her guitar, she also stated that she used a flat pick and a finger slide on some of the early recordings when the Carter family stared out.

Very cool! Thanks for posting this video. It's exactly what I was looking for. Mother Maybelle played so fast it's hard to follow. This video really helps.

I can’t tell you how grateful I am for these. I came back to the guitar after 38 years (and only playing bass for a couple in the 80s). This is not an easy instrument to learn, but you have really helped me learn some good things even if I can’t keep up all the time. As I improve, I hope we can continue spreading the word.

That's wonderful to hear and see. Your lessons are great because they seem to be a throwback to a different time and I really like that.

Your demo at the 4:45 mark sure sounds nice. Hard to explain how it sounds but it sounds fresh, clean and a very clear emotional feeling. I tried a bit of this lesson today, thanks for adding more intrigue and fun to learning guitar. Amazing KZfaq post today!

I am a big fan of your playing and the work you do. I am having a problem with a song I want to do and wonder if you can help me out. Robert Wilkins Old Jim McCanans....it's an easy song but want to do it his way. Is it in open tunning? Cappo? I would really appreciate it... from a big fan 🎶
