How to make a dorset button and a couple of variations on the traditional dorset button, because, those of you who know me, know I'm all about taking a traditional stitch or technique and finding new and interesting ways to do it. As always I demonstrate the dorset button using a number of different threads and thread weights.
This tutorial will walk you through how to make a traditional dorset button and then how make one with a little twist!

After graduating from Parsons School of Design, I began my career in fashion design and freelanced both in New York City, as well as London. I designed hand knits for Elle Magazine and was the editor of the Hand Knit Page before hand knits fell out of fashion in the early 1990's and the page was discontinued. In 2008 I launched my jewelry design business, designing fine jewelry in 18 & 20 Kt Gold with gemstones that I hand select for each piece. Several awards and numerous write ups & interviews in all kinds of magazines and online zines, I found Sue Spargo in 2015 through her Craftsy class, and my life took another turn. I have been designing in some form since I sold my first felt embroidered xmas tree ornaments to a small shop in Northern California when I was 16 years old, and have never looked back. And while I've had detours along the way: had two children, worked at an advertising agency, got into acting in my early 20's, published some articles for various magazines and wrote for the Huffington Post for a few years, I have always come back to designing. It is my first love and remains so to this day.

They are often quite flexible though, which isn't ideal. Better if you can to find brass or plastic curtain rings, or a small metal bangle for a larger size DB. Oh, and always keep the tiny rings off old bras as they make the best delicate, authentic Dorset buttons when worked with very fine crochet cotton or buttonhole thread, although they are fiddly to do at that size!

Hi Ariane, I believe I met you in 2015 or so at Pat Pauly’s class in MA! Your backdrop looks like the techniques we learned. I’d seen the Dorset Buttons on Quilting Arts TV and just googled it… what a surprise to see your name pop up. I 💕 your buttons with the variety of textures & colors of threads. I may have to try these sometime as they really intrigued me. Could be a special decoration for a handmade garment! Thank you for sharing your talents. (Are you still making jewelry too?).

Thank you for youtube film.😊 I'm new to Dorset buttons and would like to make some for a cardigan which was left to me by a dear relative. I have a few questions- if you don't mind🤞 Why is blanket stitch turned to centre and not left on outside where it would make edge of button longer lasting? Why is it blanket stitch rather than buttonhole stitch - which would last better? As on tailored garments. Do you get sore elbow tendons from pulling the length of thread/wool through with each stitch? Best wishes, Alison
@ArianeZurcher212
@ArianeZurcher212 4 ай бұрын
Hi Alison, these are great questions! So here goes: you do not need to turn it inward and I often don’t, it depends on what I’m going to be using it for. Use either stitch, it won’t make a difference. And I cannot remember your final question, so I’ll have to answer in a second response. ❤️
@ArianeZurcher212

And finally, I’ve never gotten sore elbows or anything else from making these, but perhaps I’m just lucky, I don’t know. 🤷‍♀️ Tell me how it goes!

What is the purpose of doing a blanket stitch if you will not be using those knots in your design? Can you not just wrap the threads around, without doing the full blanket stitch?
@ArianeZurcher212

Wrapping thread around a ring will be very difficult to control and even harder to keep tight, but give it a shot and see what happens and then report back. ❤️

You'll get a bit of an unsightly dip where the ring starts and ends, so much better to find brass or plastic curtain rings, or a small metal bangle for a larger size DB. Oh, and always keep the tiny rings off old bras as they make the best delicate, authentic Dorset buttons when worked with very fine crochet cotton or buttonhole thread, although they are fiddly to do at that size!
