for those who don't understand and are commenting on the exaggerated contrast, he's teaching how to draw, as opposed to painting a commissioned portrait, so the features and contrast are more pronounced to convey his lesson, he's an absolute master of anatomy and we're very lucky he's sharing his knowledge, be respectfull

because halftones are subtle and hard to judge when there are no other values established. I find that separating the major families (shadow and light) first, helps to judge the subtleties of the halftones.

Wow, this.. This is what I need. I had almost given up on "how to draw"-videos, because they're usually very basic and never tell you anything besides "do the basic stucture, add the rest, shadows", no matter how good the artist is. I began thinking drawing from reference was the only way to get anywhere, but you showed me (us) what the actual drawing process is with shadow mapping. For that, you have my sincere gratefulness. Also, it's really satisfying to watch you draw.

Great constructive criticism! thank you. I think you're right, even though I have a separate video about the ear structure, I should tie them together more in the step by step videos. Next time I'll reiterate some of the most important points about structure while showing how to do it..

I've been drawing for a few years now but I never really felt the need to learn about the structures of different features and the anatomy. I now realize how naive I was. within 3 days of watching your videos, (head and facial features) I'm now able to draw portraits and my own face too (with good accuracy I'd say). I'll be binging ALL your videos for the next two three four five six seven months. hopefully I can become a good artist. thank you for your lovely videos.

proko, you're a genius, your videos and your style are the best on youtube...I have a question, what are your thoughts on using a tablet like a galaxy note pro to practice your drawing skills? would that translate well to paper? I know paper and and pencil/charcoal is the best but as a substitute when you don't have your art materials around

You hold the pencil like a magic wand. I notice by using the sides of the lead instead of the point you can get softer shapes and better gradation between values.

Your tutorials are awesome! They really helped me out. I just wish you'd discuss the different angles a little bit more. In the beginning of the video we can see some other angles, but you do not discuss them. I've been drawing some faces lately, based on your vids and I always get a mixture of male looking features and female looking features. So if you could do some kind of video where you discuss all the features again but now how to make them male or female, that would be really helpfull :)

I love the way you beak down things on your videos, it makes it so easy to follow up! By the way, may i suggest a video about lightsource and super-imposing forms? the video with the egg example was very good, but i think it doesnt make vey clear how light would work on things like fingers facing the lightsource, or like the center of the ear you drew here.I want to know how does light work when things seem to be the same value and how to differentiate them without using a line :/

I just can't identify that many values when drawing faces, and that's why my drawings always look a little flat on some areas, especially cheeks and forehead, except when the contrast is very high. Somehow it seems to me that there is some exaggeration that simply dont exist in the original, just to make the drawing look alive, but that requires study besides observation. Is that right?
@shiver.breeze
@shiver.breeze 2 жыл бұрын
You can learn to add more contrast and identity values by eye better by printing out a reference photo and outlining each of the major sections where two values look different. Then you can exaggerate these areas in your Portrait by making the shadows darker and the highlights brighter.

I have a bit of a problem. I can't actually see the core shadows in the reference picture. In fact, the bottom of the ear lobe looks the darkest to me. Are they something +Proko added after years of experience, or are my eyes not trained enough? Because the core shadows don't seem to correspond to the reference picture at all... Edit: after watching the the video on shading, is this what he calls "cheating in" a core shadow for better readability?

I enjoy following along in your tutorials and am able to make some good art work through them. But maybe it's because I practically never draw anything more than cartoony ears, they aren't that significant imo, or I only draw them partially but god this one was a pain in the ass for me. I divided doing it among several days and am glad to move on. Still glad I learned it though.

Find something and take it under the light source, u will notice that there's one shadow shape and if u look close to it, u will notice there's two values even though there's only one shadow shape and the dark ones is closer to the object, For example if u use a ball then the shadow shape will be a circle, and three quarter of the circle which closer to the object will be darker than the rest
