When June and July rolls around I will sometimes wet a banana and wear it on my head under the helmet.

Where I live temperatures can exceed 35C/95F. The key to staying comfortable is becoming acclimated, a process that takes a week or more during which you need to take it easy as you get accustomed to exercising in the heat. Your body will begin sweat a lot more and you'll be surprisingly comfortable while riding, although when you stop it'll feel like you've been dropped in an oven. You lose a lot of fluids, so I sometimes carry up to 2 liters of water. It's dangerous to drink that much plain water, so I use a commercial electrolyte powder; I also carry salt pills just in case. Eating also helps keep electrolyte levels up. My general rule of thumb is that as long as you can keep yourself feeling good on the bike, you're safe. If you feel uncomfortable riding you need to back off. As cyclists we tend to push through discomfort, but if you do that with heat you're asking for heat exhaustion. You may suddenly feel the heat inexplicably disappear; that's a sign of heat stroke, which is a medical emergency.

I just kept wondering, if this is summer, does the UK even have a summer??? Why are they talking about overshoes, base layers, gilets? It makes sense though that they didn't mention sunblock or long sleeves, it explains why the English are known worldwide for turning briefly pink and then red when exposed to sunlight.

@@picasticks there are tons of articles appearing about the "heat", and what to do about it, when the temperature goes over 20 °C. For a few hours in a day, if you're sitting in the sun. It's ridiculous. If you have 25 °C during the summer months in Hungary, it's considered to be a cool down. Summer temperature is 30-40 °C. I'm always laughing at them when they talk about how hot 20 °C is.

Summer is my worst enemy for cycling. For example I went to the Gran Fondo Nove Colli last weekend, from 6am to 11am the temperature was great so the first 100km I did manage my tempo and body temperature, the hell came around 12pm when the temperatures reached around 34-36c, had to slown down or I might faint due to the high temperatures (and humidity too). My hydration was on point and thank god I found some fountains during the race to take quick showers, sadly I lost a lot of time but better that than dying somewhere.

Did the 2021 Festive 500 where every day was over 40C, and the only day to get through that was starting before dawn, watching the sunrise with a coffee, and being done and indoors again before 9am at which point it was just in the low 30s. Selecting a time of day when the sun is lower on the horizon (both ends of the day) has a lower UV index, and use the middle of the day to see something new so ride there in the morning, and ride back in the afternoon. There are also good long sleeve summer jerseys that have a UPF rating that'll stop the sunburn (e.g., Bellweather Sol-Air).

In the UK, "Hot" is a relative term....Where I live, Hot means 29 to 32 C. Warm means 20 to 28 C. Cool means 13 to 19 C, and cold means 5 to 12 C. Very cold means -4 to 4 C (but I don't do that anymore)

On jersey colour: There is a scientific concept called Albedo, which is all about how much heat different colours can absorb. It is on a scale out of 1. The closer to 1, the more the colour can reflect sunlight and vice-versa. Black has been show to have an Albedo of close to zero, while white on the other hand, has an Albedo of about 0.9. The brighter the colour, the higher the Albedo, so 10/10 I'd go for a brighter jersey in the heat. Also better for road safety.

Go out early, don't ride when it's too hot because heat stroke is serious, plan your water stops, take sunscreen with you and don't wear a mesh jersey when the UV is high as you can burned through the mesh if it's not UV rated.

Hi Folks, I love your shows. They're so informative & fun to watch..Just want to add that a good high SPF sunblock. We don't want some misbehaving cells stop us from cycling, do we? By the way, how come I don't notice any tan lines on any of you guys? I can notice a difference on my skin after a 20 min exposure. Which makes me think: Are you guys really cyclists? LOL..Cheers! - Ariston

What are your top tips for staying cool in hot weather? -- ride with the dragon queen! wear light colored drifit shirt. dark ones specially black means overheating. wear glasses, specially designed for cycling stay hydrated. unless you vilified water bottles, better invest to thermal insulated ones. better bring two bottles, one either filled with ice or left in the freezer overnight bring extra shirt if going for long ride. bring cotton towel/hanky for sweat give praises to the dragon queen of wales -- MANON LLOYD!

#askgcn I agree that having glasses on is good to keep the wind and bugs out of your eyes. However, I wear prescription glasses, what kind of cycling sunglasses are there for those of us who wear prescription glasses?

Optilabs in the UK do prescription cycling glasses. Or you could use "Over Glasses" which are sun glasses that fit over your prescription glasses. Cocoon is one brand but there are cheaper options.

They are still wearing 2 top layers in summer 😂. The UK really is a thing. I cycle with an open shirt and very short shorts in the summer and still get really hot here in Spain.

It's all good, unless it gets like 32-35°C. At that temperature you're hot even in the thinnest clothes. Unfortunately, this temperature is normal in summer in my region.

Lots and lots of water. I need to add a water filter to my saddle bag as there are very few places I can get access to water on my country side rides. Been a few times I’ve been desperate enough to knock on a few doors asking for water. Didn’t feel I could the last couple years with Covid.

Wool is exactly what you want in warm weather. It is way more comfy than any other fabric, and as a bonus it doesn't smell. Why do everyone think that wool = warm?
