My guesses would be An overflow box that isn't drilled involves a tube/pipe that has to go up, above, over the rim, into the other side. That can be a problem if air gets in, or something happens to the pipe. So they aren't failproof. Use instead of a stand pipe through bottom: This type of box system can be easily transferred to any tank with simple removal. Your typical standpipe setup to bottom usually involves a full depth partition that isn't necessarily easy to move to a new tank, and also may not fit the new tank if you did cut it out. Also, the full depth partition eats up more real estate in the tank, whereas a box like this only takes up space at the upper half of the aquarium. Just my 2c.

Most glass aquariums 40 gallons and larger have tempered glass bottoms which means they can’t be drilled without shattering , so drilling your own standpipe isn’t possible on many standard aquariums. They are also aesthetically less appealing in my opinion.

Actually, it would be a bit high with the arrow pointed sideways. But because the Petco tank has a rim, it actually sits about perfect. If you are going to do this, just double check before you drill. If you are drilling a rimless tank, then the arrow will definitely go up! Thanks for watching and commenting!
