How to drill through a hardened steel bearing race using a 6mm drill bit made by Artu. It is often thought to be virtually impossible to drill through hardened steel until now, these drill bits will drill through most materials such as wood, plastic, hard metals, masonry etc. Brought to you by www.ultimatehandyman.co.uk/for...

I would not recommend solid carbide as they are too brittle. I tried drilling this same bearing race with a carbide drill in the pillar drill and it snapped. ARTU recommend setting the drill to it's fastest speed or 2000rpm with no lubricant/coolant.

I'm thinking the friction from the drill softens the metal as your drilling. That's why you have to drill it dry and use a lot of downward pressure.

Ha Ha, These bits are good but it is hard to get them started sometimes as they are not sharp, so a better option might be solid carbide drills- But solid carbide drills are very brittle and can easily break so a drill press and good technique are essential.

Opposite from a normal bit, you're not suppose to put oil or water on it because at almost 1900F is when the metal you're drilling turns into a different type of metal. So you need a strong drill press (which most don't have) to create the needed heat as you crank down on it. I'm just theorizing all this... might just be true.

A normal carbide tipped masonry bit will work for this also just make sure there is a half decent edge on it, a quick touch up with a diamond file will ensure this. Solid carbide drills will also do a really nice job but are very brittle and prone to chipping when used in a less than rigid tool like a drill press so I stick to carbide masonry bits unless the hole size is critical.

These bearings are used as the thrust bearing on wheels that between them hold bogies weighing about 13 tonnes (there are four wheels on each bogie). The thrust bearing is covered in high temperature grease and is held in place with grease seals. During the industrial process the bogies are put into large ovens, but the maximum temperature of the oven is only 120 degrees C, which is not hot enough to normalise the metal. All the bearings used on the wheels look as though they have been heated but they have not. ***** Hi, Sorry to bother you again but I am really stuck and need some advise. I bought 5mm, 6mm, 7mm, 8mm, 9mm & 2 x 10mm Artu drill bits from ebay seller e-happyhome. I've paid around £50! The seller claims that these drill bits aren't suitable for Stainless Steel as in their disclaimer places this type of steel in the soft steel category. I know that is wrong as stainless steel is one of the hardest metals. Now, because he wrote in his disclaimer that these drill bits aren't suitable for stainless steel he gets away without replacing or refunding these bits. The 5mm & 6mm drill bits I've used them at high speed and without any cutting oil and disintegrated almost instantly. After this experience this I've only use these bits on slow speed with cutting oil and it seams that they work better. 7mm & 8mm worked fine however 9mm & 10mm worn quite badly. I've given this seller on ebay negative feedback for my buying experience with him and he managed somehow to get that removed. He recommended me to use FESTA drill bits to drill my 316 Stainless Steel! Do you know anything about these drill bits & how suitable are for drilling stainless steel? My father used to be a machinist and worked in the industry for 40+ years and he used to work with VIDIA drill bits which were the best at drilling hard metals & anything for that matter but cannot find any to buy on UK market. I'm asking you this as I believe that he doesn't seam to know much about steel since he places SS on the soft steel category and do not want to invest in FESTA drill bits at his advice! I look forward hearing from you soon. Thanks in advance!

mcorco1 Compared to hardened steel Stainless is considered soft. The Festa cobalt bits are good on stainless steel, but they can be difficult to sharpen as the end of the drill is sharpened quite differently to a normal HSS drill bit. Having said that as long as you use plenty of lubricant the drill should stay sharp for a long time. I actually got some Festa Cobalt drills for a friend of mine who drills stainless on a daily basis and he was very impressed with them.

why you don't go slow ....

You have to go as fast as possible with no lubricant as the generated heat helps to cut through the hardened steel.

You don't need a coolant/lubricant with these bits. If you use one, the bit will not drill through hardened steel ;-)

Yeah, it drilled it, but the drill bit was pretty much fit for the bin afterwards. Bearing race steel is incredibly hard though!

First off there is nothing special here.... It's a standard cement carbide bit with a sharp edge. Hit one with diamond stone fast won't vost you 300$ like these.... second you all are not even in right area anymore this is the 21st century people. High speed ceramics replaced this year's ago.

I look forwards to seeing the video of you drilling a hole in a bearing race with a ceramic bit. Please let me know when you have uploaded it. If you could make the hole about 8mm diameter like in this video that would be great.

Ultimate Handyman. First off not an issue! Today at my shop I will show you how to drill a hole through a whole 160mm dia boat bearing top to bottom all as a solid unit! Balls and all inside cause ceramic bits chew hardened stainless bearings as part so fast and easy the balls won't even roll out of place inside as it cuts right through one. You ramble on and on about how your such a skilled milling professional every time people call out they are masonry bits... But if you where really skilled you would know carbide hates heat and to cool it. You would get a better chip rate at 10-20,000rpm drilling a stainless race like we do in my shop weekly for orders. But unlike you we use carbide inserts or ceramic insert bits. What you have is garbage masonry bits made with steel with a sharpened carbide braised edge put on that last 1 or 2 holes with a titanium nitrite coating to hide it.

Oh dear. You seem to be confused, firstly I have not claimed to be a “milling professional” anywhere, I have simply demonstrated how to drill through hardened steel, which has obviously triggered you! The makers of these drill bits “Artu” recommend not using any coolant on their bits when drilling hardened steels- www.artu.com/multi-purpose-drill-bit-drilling-tips.php Please let me know when you have uploaded the video and I’ll critique it 😉

What freebies? You mean the ARTU drill bits that I purchased to drill some hardened steel ;-) These drill bits are designed to be used at high speed with no lubricant or coolant, so before you criticise someone that clearly knows more than you do perhaps you better think before posting nonsense next time ;-)
